Expired Domain Report: KeyPoint.com, SellOff.com and more - A weekly roundup of expired domain name sales. February 8 marked the Chinese New Year. Yes, 2016 is to be the “Year of the Monkey”. After the amazing surge in prices we saw during 2015 – the “Year of the Sheep”, it amuses me to say – the Chinese domain sector went through a predictable downturn that has lasted 2 months so far. Partly to allay worries about stagnant or falling prices, domain investors in the West have clung to this New Year holiday like a life raft, assuring one ... read more ...

Not Quite What You're Thinking: Tesila.com (Expired Domain Report) - Here are expired domain names that sold within the past week. Here’s something you’re going to see more and more as brands contend with the vagaries of foreign pronunciation and transliteration: Tesila.com ($14.0k). As you must have guessed, that price was based on an electric car company. But it’s not a typo. In Romania, there is a town called Teșila – evidently too small to appear in the list of cities with 2000+ residents. Small size notwithstanding, you can book a luxury ski hotel ... read more ...

January domain name sales in-depth - Joseph Peterson takes an in-depth look at January’s domain name sales on NameJet. January 2016 was a busy month for NameJet. Not only did the auction platform deliver its customary mix of expired domains and seller-managed inventory; it also handled the NamesCon auctions in conjunction with Right Of The Dot and (in many cases) a live auctioneer at the Las Vegas conference. In presenting these January sales data, I’ve decided to exclude all domains associated with NamesCon, whether they were ... read more ...

CHIPs, Numbers, and other lapsed domain name sales - Joseph Peterson analyzes the past week of expired domain name sales. Once again, China tops these charts – but not in the customary way. Rather than numerical domains, 4-letter “CHIPs”, or even Chinese Pinyin, we’re looking at an English domain about China: ChinaTech.com. The auction outcome itself ($4.7k) isn’t at all unusual, since domains that can serve as upgrades for multiple existing websites often fetch high prices. And that’s the case, based on brands like these: China-Tech.com ChinaTech.com.tw ChinaTechNews.com AllChinaTech.com ChinaTech.com.vn ChinaTechSourcing.co.uk etc. Yes, ... read more ...

Namejet.com Reports Almost $2.5 Million In Domain Sales In January - Namejet.com reported almost $2.5 Million dollars in domain name sales in January 2016. Only domain names that sold for $2,000 or more are included as are only domain sales that were paid for by the end of the month. In all Namejet.com reported over 300 domain sales including many from the RightoftheDot.com auction that was held on Namejet.com as part of the Namescon Conference. By comparison Namejet.com reported sales for January 2015 were less than $800,000 based on 1/2 as many domain sales Here ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report: NNN.net sells for $7.2k - A look back at the past week in expired domain name sales. SnapNames turned in the top expiry result this week: 489.net ($7.2k). Such 3-digit .NETs are fairly rare in these charts, since only 1000 exist and those few rarely expire. The last time we saw one was 9 months ago, before the Chinese surge in prices; and it’s interesting to note how little the value has changed between these 2 NNN.net sales – quite unlike the steep appreciation in categories like LLLL.net, where 160,000 “CHIPs” ... read more ...

Toot.com for $31.8k and other lapsed domain name sales - Toot.com leads expired domain name sales. Close observers will have noticed the absence of SnapNames results from my last article, which only covered NameJet expired domains. In the week since NamesCon, most of us have drifted homeward and settled back into our normal routines. So this time both auction houses are represented in the charts – 7 days for SnapNames, 5 days for NameJet. By far the biggest expired domain auction was TOOT.com ($31.8k). Most of us will recognize that as an English ... read more ...

I'm offered domains on NameJet - For the first time in over 5 years, I’m trying my hand at selling domain names on NameJet. I’ll report back about how it goes. Here are some of the domains I am selling: Cathleen.com – I might have set the reserve too low, but I’ll let the market decide. AfricanAmericans.com – Registered in 1997, this was one of iREIT’s notable domains in one of its acquisitions. VietnamWar.com – another 1997 registration with lots of potential. I also have two good product names — PennyLoafers.com ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report – NamesCon edition - Here’s what you might have missed in the expired domain market. Last week, much of the domain industry’s attention converged at NamesCon, including a live auction arranged by NameJet + RightOfTheDot. (Quite a successful auction, I might add.) Yet for all that buzz, in the background business went on as usual. After all, domainers don’t stop paying attention to valuable expired domains simply because registrars have a few new features to unveil! Here’s what sold at NameJet during that ... read more ...

Inside NameJet's record month - The journey to a record December at NameJet. Did you catch that? Maybe not. To really appreciate just how marvelous NameJet’s (podcast) performance was during December – indeed, throughout the whole of 2015 – let’s rewind and play things back in slow motion. Since mid 2011, NameJet has reported domain sales that clear over $2000. Early on, the auction platform announced as few as 49 domains per month; and during its first year the market place never surpassed 92. Less than 1/4 of months ... read more ...

Kabei.com, JunGong.com lead lapsed domain report - [Editor’s note: this Expired Domain Report normally would have been published at the end of last week. It was delayed due to the New Year holiday.] After a pair of 5-figure Chinese Pinyin domains topped the previous chart, my first reaction this time around was to assume the same thing had happened. The second highest item, JunGong.com ($8.1k), is Chinese: jùn gōng (竣工) means “project completion”. However, I can find no Chinese match for Kabei.com ($10.1k); and at this stage the buyer’s ... read more ...

Tuscany.com; Erotica.com; Penis.com Added At No Reserve To ROTD/Namescon Auction - Some amazing domain names were added to the RightoftheDot.com domain auction being held at Namescon late last week all at NO Reserve by CheapDomains.com, including one that has an Estibot value of over $5 Million Dollars. That domain name is Penis.com, one of the premier “adult” domains but which is one of those adult words you can say on broadcast television. Penis.com of course can be used as a medical site. BenPao.com during $25.7k in Chinese-dominated week for lapsed domains - Chinese buyers pick up the top spots last week. Thanks to mulled cider and holiday caroling, this article appears later than usual. Fa la la la la! While these auctions took place the week prior to Christmas (December 16-22), we decided against publishing on Christmas Day. As you can see, China came back with a vengeance. 10 sales over $2k were 4-letter .COMs, proving that category hasn’t been completely diverted  from the expiry cycle after all – not yet. Expired Domain Report – Chewbacca, Adorno… - Any bets: Who needs to be more frequently Flead.com ($211) – an ewok or Chewbacca? Seeing Adorno.com ($2.8k) in the charts this week, I’m sorely tempted to bore everybody with an essay on the philosopher, Theodor Adorno, who’ll never let me forget that “the splinter in your eye is the best magnifying glass”. He’d take a fairly dim view of domaining. Come to think of it, every other sentence the man wrote was a yelp in response to some metaphysical flea bite. So Adorno beats ewoks ... read more ...

Constipated.com, Roper.com and some-more lapsed domain name sales - Last time, China was conspicuously absent from the high end of NameJet / SnapNames expired domain auctions; and I proposed 1 theory as to why. Since then, Chinese-style domains have made a comeback; but they’re clearly playing second fiddle. China placed 3 sales among the top 10, ranking #4, #5, and #6. In the top 20, another 5. Reaching out to the top 30, you’ll find just 3 more Chinese domains. That’s a fairly uniform 37% spread – 32% by spending. Compare that to China’s presence ... read more ...
