What domain names Mozilla and others bought final week - Mozilla buys domain names for open web game. It used to be that domain name marketplaces saw a sales slowdown over major Western holidays, particularly Christmas. Now, there’s another holiday that dials things back: Chinese New Year. Sedo handled about $1 million worth of domain name sales last week. This is in line with many weeks last year, but below recent weeks propped up by Chinese buyers. But with “everyone” in China on vacation, it’s back to the old norm for a couple weeks. Perhaps ... read more ...

CHIPs, Numbers, and other lapsed domain name sales - Joseph Peterson analyzes the past week of expired domain name sales. Once again, China tops these charts – but not in the customary way. Rather than numerical domains, 4-letter “CHIPs”, or even Chinese Pinyin, we’re looking at an English domain about China: ChinaTech.com. The auction outcome itself ($4.7k) isn’t at all unusual, since domains that can serve as upgrades for multiple existing websites often fetch high prices. And that’s the case, based on brands like these: China-Tech.com ChinaTech.com.tw ChinaTechNews.com AllChinaTech.com ChinaTech.com.vn ChinaTechSourcing.co.uk etc. Yes, ... read more ...

What domain names Time Inc. and others bought during a finish of a year - Time Inc. bought a sports domain name and Sears might start a site at Wash.in. Sedo turned in $2 million worth of domain name sales during the last two weeks of the year, a fairly high number of the holiday period. I think it was helped by a couple big sales, because $2 million is high for a transaction volume of just 648 domains. Some large companies bought domains, including Time and (I believe) Sears. End user domain name sales adult to $50,000 - A “Merry Christmas” edition of the end user sales report. Sedo has changed its weekly sales disclosure to only include sales of $2,000 or less. Their median sales price is well below $2,000, so this means the volume of end user sales I can report is significantly lower. I’m going to work with Sedo to get additional data for this report going forward. But for this week–the last end user report of the year–I’ve discovered 11 end user sales of up to $50,000. Here’s a look at these end ... read more ...

Sedo has watched buy it now go from 2% to 56% - Sedo put together a graphic in their latest newsletter that chronicled buy it now sales. 2008 saw buy it now at just 2% now they are at 56% with numbers over 65% in recent weeks. Debates go back and forth about whether or not to list your names at buy it now or make an offer. There are pros and cons for both. The biggest con for buy it now is you will never hit that outlier homerun. You don’t know if it is Google hitting the buy it now or little Joe’s thrift shop. The flipside is that many businesses ... read more ...

Sedo links adult with .EU whois to sell domains - Name not available? Whois searchers will now see if it’s for sale. EURid is now showing if a domain name is listed for sale at Sedo when someone does a whois lookup, and linking directly to the sale listing. This is a nifty deal. Keep in mind that full .eu whois records are only available at EURid’s website, so many people use the actual website to look up whois records. Now, if they see the domain is registered, they will be notified that it can still be obtained (see picture below). A couple ... read more ...

Sharks.TV, 420.agency and other End User domain name sales - A condo board, marijuana company and rugby site bought domain names last week. Is the low-hanging fruit in short domain names gone? Sedo’s sales and dollar volume dropped this week. It turned in 602 transactions totaling $1.1 million. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but is lower than previous weeks. No matter. This column is about end user domain name sales. YogaShop.com and TheHairShop.com are still in escrow, but at $20k each, they’re definitely end user purchases.
