So Far Only Three Major 4 Year Colleges Have Registered a .Education Domain - The new gTLD .Education opens up for live registrations on April 2nd but of course had a Sunrise period early for trademark holders and its in the final day of the Early Access Program. Going through the zone file I only found only  three what you would consider major, 4 year brick and mortar universities that applied for a .Education domain; Arizona State University registered  ArizonaState.education,  ArizonaStateuniversity.education, Sundevil.education and  Sundevils.education. Trademarks and new gTLDs: what did we learn at ICANN 49? - On World Trademark Review  we tend to shy away from ‘news round-up blogs’, but having spent the last week in Singapore attending the ICANN meeting, it is worth providing a few takeaways from the event. The big talking point at the meeting, which we will save for another day, related to the recent US government announcement that it is ready to transfer its stewardship of particular internet technical functions to the global internet community. However, there were other issues that have ... read more ...

Hot off the press: CentralNic says .ink domain is now available - The internet has not brought about the paperless office, which may explain why the generic top level domain (gTLD) .ink is going live today. Domain name distributor CentralNic (LON:CNIC) is the exclusive global distributor for the .ink domain, and said it is now accepting applications to use the gTLD – the bit of an internet address that comes after the final dot – from trademark owners. Members of the general public wanting to secure a .ink domain will be able to apply for one via a domain registrar ... read more ...

Microsoft and a Bing Entity Engine - Frederic Lardinois wrote a piece on Tech Crunch tonight about Microsoft and their plan for their entity engine. The entity engine is Microsoft’s answer to the Google Knowledge Graph. These products are not the most desirable from a web developer standpoint. Google and Bing would both like to give people using their search engine a direct answer, keep them on their site and lessen the need to click through to a website. This will certainly not affect all niches, but someone running something like ... read more ...

DomainNameSales.com syndication with GoDaddy is over - Today is the last day domains listed on DomainNameSales.com will show up for searches on GoDaddy. Today is the last day that Sedo listings will be syndicated to GoDaddy. It turns out it’s also the last day for DomainNameSales.com listings on the site. [Update: while March 31 was supposed to be the last day for DNS syndication on GoDaddy, GoDaddy has kept the listings up while it finishes a transition for Afternic listings in the registration path.] That means that ... read more ...

5 questions to be answered during this week’s DomainFest - Attendance, new TLDs, and other questions to be answered this week. I’m writing this while airborne on my way to Los Angeles for this week’s DomainFest conference. Here are five questions that will be answered by the end of the week. 1. How many people will show up? DomainFest usually packs in 500+ people at its conference. That might be a challenge this year. The conference was moved back a couple months, announced late, and is part of a packed conference schedule ... read more ...

Wow: is this a many costly new TLD sale yet? - English.club sells for $17,500. The .Club domain name enters landrush tomorrow, and already the domain name is showing solid early results. Point in fact: English.club sold for $17,500. Given the huge supply of new TLDs hitting the market, solid keywords are selling for a fraction of what the matching .com domain would sell for. So $17,500 is really high. (This is something I’ll talk about on my panel at DomainFest tomorrow.) Add to that TLD Registry’s $181,000 ... read more ...

After 10 Days Frank Schilling Registrar, Uniregistry Has 108 New gTLD … - @ Brad, For me personally, here are my top reasons. Time: I waste more time screwing around with GoDaddy’s masterfully cluttered website and administering domains on an often individual basis than I need to. I believe that GoDaddy has made changes within the last year that make this more time consuming for larger domain owners because it increases the probability of auto-renewals and or some upsell opportunity. Also, I doubt I’ll be getting cold calls ... read more ...

March 26: updated status of sunrise periods and trademark claims notification … - As we previously reported to you (click here to view April 29, 2013 TLD article), the internet is expanding to include hundreds of new top-level-domains (TLDs) (examples of TLDs as we know them today include .com, .net. and .org – i.e., the term that is to the right of the "dot"). While the only certainty at that time was that the launch was inevitable, like it or not, it's finally here (click here to view January 9, 2014 Sunrise article). Frost Brown Todd will be sending out ... read more ...

Oil.Center 11,000 GBP Bid on Sedo - Oil.Center was registered by a gentleman in Kuala Lumpur on 3/16/14 and is now on Sedo auctions with a day and a half left at 11,000 GBP.  There is only one bid which looks like the owner received the bid and pushed it to auction on 3/24/14. If its a legit bid, its kind of a ballsy move to send to auction, I personally would want to get that deal closed asap. I think if you have a legitimate buyer interested in something brand new like .center, you don’t want to allow time for buyer’s remorse ... read more ...

.flights: ready for take off? - The protection of brands is an increasingly important area for all brand owners and one aspect of brand protection is to ensure that brands are protected in the key corresponding domain names. Until recently, the number of generic top level domains (“gTLDs”) has been restricted to a limited number of gTLDs, including .com, .org and .info. However, a large number of new gTLDs are now to be rolled out over the next few years.  Indeed, the roll-out of some key new air travel related ... read more ...
