This is Your Chance to Tell ICANN How Registrars Should Act - ICANN announced that it is now accepting comments for proposed changes to the Registrar Accreditation Agreements, those agreements registrars sign with ICANN which in part, govern registrars conduct. Here is what we are going to send off in our comments and strongly suggest you do the same. ICANN should ... read more ...

Maybe Getting that New Domain Extension Won’t be That Easy - Looking at the draft flow chart that ICANN has posted for the process of obtaining new extensions, it looks like it may not be a quick and easy process as the press described. Certainly you can count next year out. An extension can be knocked out by if it is “too similar to reserved names or existing TLD’s and /or likely to cause instability.” If it passes that test it still can be knocked out if someone files an objection, on any one of 4 grounds: String Confusion Existing legal rights Morality ... read more ...

GoDaddy Bans Employees from Bidding on TDNAM - Domain registrar changes policy on employee bidding. GoDaddy has changed its policy on employees bidding in TDNAM domain name auctions after a firestorm erupted last week (and over the weekend). Domain Name Wire’s original story, which was based on a thread from NamePros and additional information from a reader, put a hot topic in the limelight. At first it was confined to the domain name industry, but over the weekend the story appeared on Slashdot, Ycombinator, ... read more ...

ICANN Fee Rule Change Won’t End Domain Tasting, Frontrunning - ICANN’s recent rule change will have mixed results. ICANN recently moved a step further to changing how it handles refunds for domain names in conjunction with the registry. Currently, ICANN charges a 20 cent fee per domain name registered. However, this fee is refundable along with the entire price of the domain registration if the domain is “returned” to the registry within 5 days. With the new rules, the 20 cent fee won’t be refundable after a registrar ... read more ...

New Extension .CYM: That Wouldn’t Confuse Anyone, Would It? - According to an article, New Whales is going for the .CYM extension for a Welsh websites. South Wales West AM Bethan Jenkins said the ICANN annoucement: “could, in effect, pave the way for the dotCYM domain name to be used for Welsh website addresses. It’s important that the world has access to everything that Wales has to offer and I believe that a dot CYM web address would be one way of achieving this.” Google+Michael Berkens ... read more ...

GoDaddy Insider Bidding creates non-domain Blog Headlines - Slashdot.org, a non-domain blog has picked up the story about Adam Dicker the VP of Godaddy in charge of  their aftermarket auctions bidding on such auctions. Good to see. We need to get the word out about this story and Tucows who has taken domains, right from registrants and kept them for themselves. Image if Network Solutions did that, pick the best of the expiring domains off the top for themselves, the outcry would be huge. Same principle here. A registrar should not be able to retain all the ... read more ...

The End of Domain Tasting - In all this hype and hoopla of new gTLDs being proposed by ICANN one major issue was completely overshadowed – that of domain tasting. ICANN has addressed it in this meeting and measures recommended to prevent it from taking place. Domain tasting is the practice of registering domain names and ‘tasting’ the traffic before registering or dropping them. This is mostly done by the bigger players in the industry like registrars and drop services though some registrars do allow registrants ... read more ...

How Can A .xxx/.sex Extension Be OK Now? - I have read hundreds of stories about ICANN voting to allow the creation of an unlimited amount of domain extensions in the mainstream media.  Each and everyone of these article talks about an adult extension .xxx/.sex or some other version as a foregone conclusion in terms of popularity among users and applicants. The question is how can ICANN approve an adult extension now having turned down .xxx three times already? On March 30, 2007, just over a year ago, ICANN rejected the .xxx extension for ... read more ...

Fight Against New Extensions - This is a Guest Post by Seb ICANN is opening the door to a huge mess for companies of all size, SMBs to Fortune 500. Companies were used (should i say forced) to register their company name and brands in all new extensions ICANN would come up with : .eu / .mobi / .asia. These are nothing but defensive registrations, mostly not resolving or simply redirecting to the .com corporate site. On top of that, multinational companies faced an even bigger challenge registering, managing (or fighting for) ... read more ...

Don’t Panic. Now is a Time to Invest. - “As far as buying when everyone else doesn’t want to buy, that’s an iffy suggestion. If you had bought the nasdaq as it was falling in 2001, you’re still in the red”… I think Frank above, takes a rather pessimistic view of the domain industry overall and I’m not quite sure I agree. Yes indeed Frank’s assertions about the stock market on a slippery slope downwards are correct and I’m not sure cost average investing as Andrew points out on the downside is wise for the ... read more ...

What Does ICANN’s ‘Yes’ Vote Mean to You? Not Much. - ICANN’s decision to liberalize the process for adding new TLDs won’t have much of an affect on you, unless you manage trademarks. Today ICANN voted to liberalize the process and acceptance of new top level domains (similar to .info and .asia). What does this mean to the average domainer and internet user? Despite the mainstream media sensationalizing this (.sex is coming!), I doubt it will add up to much. Trademark lawyers will have busy dockets. Depending ... read more ...

A three member WIPO panel has denied a complaint for the domain name All.com, saying the case is outside of UDRP’s scope. Tucows Response to the Post: Not Good Enough and Here’s Why - Today Bill Sweetman, the General Manager, Domain Portfolio of Tucows responded to our post of the other day regarding ethics in drop auctions. Basically Mr. Sweetman repeated much of what he posted the other day on our blog, in response to our initial post. The domains Tucows took back, were owned by Tucows. Tucows released the domains into their own auction by mistake and when they realized the mistake they exercised their rights as a registrant and redeemed the domains. Forget Domains, buy a TLD! | mwzd.com - ICANN’s Paris conference has thrown up some interesting ideas and questions, chief among them has been the possibility of introducing thousands of new TLDs on a pay and play basis. This BBC News Story has the crux of the issue. What they’re essentially saying is that anyone willing to fork out between $39,000 – $390,000 for a TLD could possibly buy their own! What this means is that if I had the money and the inclination – I could buy and promote .mwzd (not really, merely an example ) ... read more ...
