Another record-buster during NameJet - November was a great month for NameJet. During 2015, NameJet surpassed itself several times. July had a record-setting 6-figure sale, but then September broke that record within weeks. And in many ways, October was the auction platform’s strongest month ever. That is, until November. November set 2 new records. Each month, NameJet reports sales above $2000. (Most fall below that threshold.) In total, these top auctions have beaten the million-dollar mark just 4 times – starting in July, every ... read more ...

Where did China go? - Where did China go? We’ve grown accustomed to seeing China claim around 40% of the top 20 sales; and Chinese-style domains usually rank very high in these charts – #2 last week, #1 the week before, etc. stretching far back into 2014. This time, however, none of the top 16 results are Chinese – none. Why? Human error is 1 explanation. My sampling at NameJet is never 100% complete. But that limitation affects all my weekly reports, and I would expect spotty data collection to cause ... read more ...

259999.com sells for $15,100 (and other lapsed domain name sales) - Who says there’s nothing new UnderTheSun.com ($3.8k)? Two months ago, a pair of 6-digit numerical domains topped these charts. But those headline-making expired auctions – $7.5k and $7.3k – fail to match last week’s $15.1k sale … even added together! Has the entire asset class doubled in price after 2 short months? Well, that can’t be inferred just by looking at a few peak sales. But it’s safe to say appreciation in this sector has been – hmm, so many adjectives to choose from ... read more ...

Expired Domain Name Report (It's a large one) - The Western domain market takes home gold, silver, and bronze medals this week. You’ll see a pair of 2-word English category killers and a short, word-based brandable. Wheelz.com ($7.1k) covers many existing brands – for niches as diverse as wheel chairs, roller skates, tires, and automobiles. Part of that domain’s value is intrinsic; but much of the bidding competition for such brandables is based on preexisting brands, any of which might buy. You might root for the motivational wheel-chair ... read more ...

Several of the domain name sales occurred, as they often do after the domain auction concluded which is why it took RightoftheDot.com some time to wind up the auction and first publish the results. Expired Domain Report: Over 200 formula from past week - China dominated expired domain auctions last week, but this week the West reasserted itself. As many as 8 out of the top 20 auctions (40%) can still be laid on China’s doorstep; but previously the figure was 12 / 20 (60%). Since J-C.com ($4.2k) was purchased by someone in St. Louis, Missouri, that means the top Chinese sale – a 6-digit numerical domain – ranks only #7. Normally China wins at least 1 medal: gold, silver, or bronze. Unless this trend persists, I wouldn’t read too much ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report: Three Cheers for China! - Once again, China dominates expired domain name buying. And the Chinese feeding frenzy continues. Those who hype have cranked their hype knobs up to 11 in order to take advantage of the moment. Strike while the iron is hot! Oh, but this market demand is real nevertheless. Domains will probably never be more liquid than these China-favored categories are today; and prices (for now at least) are consistently high … possibly still climbing. 12 of the top 20 expired domain auctions at NameJet and ... read more ...

SnapNames is compelling an auction during NameJet for LTD.com - Co-branded auction is likely the first of many. NameJet is currently hosting an auction for LTD.com. This is obviously a good domain name. Not only is it three characters, but it’s also a common company ending for “Limited”. With a reserve under $50,000, it’s a no-brainer. But the real news here is that the auction is co-branded with SnapNames and NameJet, and SnapNames is helping to promote the auction even though it is taking place at NameJet. Why would one of the biggest expired domain ... read more ...

JinSe.com for $30k and other lapsed domain name sales - A weekly roundup of expired domain name sales. 59 bidders saw a golden opportunity when JinSe.com expired, yet it was the enthusiasm of just 2 of them that lifted it above $10.1k to finish 3 times higher at $30.2k. That made this piece of Chinese Pinyin NameJet’s top expired domain auction during the past week. Oh, in case you haven’t guessed already, jīn sè (金色) = “golden”. It also happens to be the name of a Korean actress. Think about this … Had 1 out of the 2 high bidders ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report: Total Number Domination! - Numeric domains take the lead in this week’s Expired Domain Report. A few days ago, while reviewing the month of September, I measured China’s contribution to high-end sales at NameJet. (Hint: It wasn’t small.) And in my previous weekly article, I discussed the ongoing appetite for 6-digit .COMs and other numerical domains that “traders are obsessed with” these days. Well, folks, the market is gluttonous. This past week, between NameJet and SnapNames, numerics took up three out ... read more ...

Expired Domain Name Report: Over 200 names - Which do domainers need – a PriceTracker.com or a ProblemGamblingGuide.com? Both! But we’re incorrigible gamblers; so naturally we spent more to learn how to spend ($7.4k) than how not to spend ($1.6k). Indeed, PriceTracker.com was last week’s top expired domain at NameJet. Obviously, the domain can aim at a mass e-commerce audience. So if you’ve been hankering for an electric back scratcher that hums Brahms’s lullaby, track it till the blowout sale! HaoZhan.com for $27.3k and other lapsed domain name sales - A weekly wrap of expired domain name sales. One reading of HaoZhan.com ($27.3k) is “warlike” (好战 / hào zhàn). China fortunately isn’t – not compared to the USA – but its domain buyers sure are aggressive lately! At least 3 of the top 4 expired domain auctions at NameJet last week fit the profile: Pinyin, LLLL, numeric. Whether or not Chinese bidders won the auctions, they would have contributed to those final prices. .COM, of course. What about hyphens, though? That’s the million ... read more ...

The new and softened Expired Domains Report! - Now with SnapNames, too. Domains expire all over the place, day in day out. Some expirations are shadowed by backorders, which can lead to auctions. Depending on the TLD, the registrar, and – yes – even chance, those auctions may take place at NameJet or at another venue … like SnapNames, which will be contributing sales data to these reports henceforward. Scroll down, and say hello! Some readers may remember that, until last December, most of the results I reported in these articles came from ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report: What are 6 number domains worth? - A look back at the past week in expired domain name sales. China is no stranger to these weekly charts, usually sitting as guest of honor or even at the head of the table. Pinyin, LLLs, short numerics …of course. Yet certain Chinese subcategories – notably 6-digit numeric domains – have traditionally been relegated to children’s folding chairs at the far end. Until now! Last week, NNNNNN.com domains kicked Mommy and Daddy out of their chairs and claimed both the #1 and #2 spots. Those ... read more ...

Westland.com during $16.2k and other lapsed domain name sales - A look back at the past week in expired domain name sales. Our planet’s dirt must be popular. At NameJet last week, 3 of the top 4 auctions contained words like “earth”, “world”, and “land”. Let’s not read too much into that coincidence, though. Westland.com ($16.2k) is both a city in Michigan and a distillery in Seattle. EarthTech.com ($15.3k) could be an upgrade for solar gear; Florida sinkhole repair; Albuquerque landscaping; or Austin physicists researching gravity, cosmology, ... read more ...
