Another Example of Why Mainstream Media Still Exists -
Wholly inaccurate article on TechCrunch shows why we still trust the Wall Street Journal more than blogs.
A lot of people think the days of print publications are limited. “Blogs are much more cost effective and citizen journalists are just as good as mainstream journalists”, the argument goes.
I respectfully disagree. There’s a reason people pay more attention to the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal than the random musings of a blogger or some guy ... read more ...

DomainSponsor Speaks Common Sense -
Domain parking company speaks out in favor of ad feed provider changes.
In its latest newsletter to clients, DomainSponsor discusses changes at its ad provider (Google). As you may know, Google has been “cleaning up” the domain channel (Google’s words, not mine). This means focusing on quality traffic and cutting (or discounting) the rest. So far I’ve seen a lot of domain parking companies nod grudgingly about how this is necessary for the long term of ... read more ...

How’s a Financial Climate for Domains? -
A domain parking update from ParkQuick’s Leonard Holmes.
by Leonard Holmes, ParkQuick
There has been some debate on how the current banking and financial crisis is affecting the domain industry.  Whether or not this specific crisis affects domains, the general economic slow-down is definitely having an effect. While $2,000,000 $3,000,000 did change hands in Moniker’s T.R.A.F.F.I.C. New York live domain auctions, this is down from $10,000,000 ... read more ...

Live Current Media (OTC: livc.ob), formerly Communicate.com, owns category killer domains such as Perfume.com, Boxing.com, and Brazil.com, but it’s looking more like a cricket media company than anything else.
The company just announced a new cricket site in agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (“BCCIâ€): bcci.tv. That is in addition to its existing Indian Premier League web site ... read more ...

Domain Companies Need to Increase “Switching Costs” -
The road to profits lies in an integrated approach to domain management.
In the domain business there are low “switching costs”. A switching cost is the time and money you incur to change service providers.
Consider domain parking, where you can move 1,000 domains from one parking company to another in about 15 minutes. Even switching registrars is relatively painless compared to many other service provider changes you do in the “offline” world.

Analysis: Oversee.net Cutbacks a Sign of a Times -
Oversee cuts 10%; domain companies need to tighten the ship.
It’s never fun when companies lay off staff. The first company I worked for out of college called a Saturday meeting to lay off 33% of the company. Worse, I was on the finance team that had to figure out how much fat to cut.
The news today that Oversee.net cut 10% of its staff isn’t a big surprise to me for a number of reasons:
1. The company acquired Moniker and SnapNames. There are overlapping roles ... read more ...

NameTumbler Helps with GeoDomain Mining -
Tool makes it easy to find geo-related domains (and more).
Every once in a while a new domain tool comes out and you don’t get around to using it. The buzz subsides and you never realize what you’ve missed.
That’s what happened to me with NameTumbler, a free tool from WhyPark. You see, I’m a closet geo domainer. I’ve been buying city/state____.com domains for a couple years. To find available domains I created a spreadsheet of top cities and all 50 ... read more ...

Domain Developers Turn to Search Engine Optimization -
Buy domain. Develop. Then what?
As domainers turn to development to monetize their domains, they may be discouraged to find the revenue on their developed sites not meeting expectations. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as developing mini-sites or full-fledged web sites, launching them, and letting the checks roll in.
That’s when search engine optimization (SEO) comes into the picture. I’ve always been turned off by the SEO business because it seems so ... read more ...

A look back at Associated Cities’ 2008 show.

Free User Interface Advice for Domain Companies -
Domain companies aren’t known for good user interfaces. Here are a few suggestions to help.
A user interface designer charges a couple hundred bucks an hour to help companies improve user experience at their web sites. I’m not a UI designer, but I do have some free advice for a few domain companies. Disclaimer: advice is worth what you pay for it.
