5 Observations from New Orleans - Here are some observations and a recap after one day in New Orleans for Domainer Mardi Gras. First, some observations: It’s deliciously ironic to hold a risk management-focused conference during Mardi Gras… Never eat a funnel cake covered in powdered sugar when wearing a black shirt… Having portable toilets every block or so during a drunken festival is a good idea… People wearing masks are scary when you’ve been drinking… It’s hard to hold a drink and ... read more ...

Interview: Donny Simonton of Parked.com - Leonard Holmes interviews Donny Simonton. In a recent post Andrew questioned the value of internet video for many purposes.  I don’t completely disagree.  My own pet peeve is pages that start playing the video as soon as you land on the page.  Give me a play button.  I know how to use it. I do believe that interviews can be a great use of video, however.  I personally get a lot more out of a video interview, because the person’s personality often ... read more ...

One of the difficulties of providing a parking service based on Yahoo’s advertising feed is that it doesn’t cover as many countries as Google’s feed. But the list of countries supported is expanding. Recently, domain parking company Parked.com added several new supported regions on its main Yahoo ad feed: -India -South East Asia Market: Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia -Latin ... read more ...

Parked.com Finalizing Stats Faster - Domain parking company finalizing earnings stats much faster than before. I logged into my Parked.com account at about 9:30 CST this morning and was shocked to see there was no asterisk next to my stats for yesterday. Parked customers know that an asterisk means the stats are not final as the company awaits stats from advertising feed providers. In other words, as of no later than 9:30 this morning Parked had already finalized stats for yesterday. Over at NamePros, ... read more ...

Parked Changes Dashboard Graph, Improves Usability - Domain parking company creates simple yet valuable graph on dashboard. It’s always nice when companies listen to suggestions. Earlier this month I made a few usability suggestions to domain name companies. One of these was to change the graph on Parked.com’s dashboard. The graph didn’t make a lot of sense. It doesn’t make sense to have a stacked column graph for RPM, CTR, and RPC. RPC is so small compared to the rest that you can’t see it, and the sum ... read more ...

Free User Interface Advice for Domain Companies - Domain companies aren’t known for good user interfaces. Here are a few suggestions to help. The Question of Domain Parking Arbitrage - Leonard Holmes of ParkQuick.com discusses domain parking arbitrage. Arbitrage involves making money because of a price differential between two markets. These days some people seem to be making a lot of money buying ads and sending the traffic to higher-paying ads on their domains. Not everyone is happy with this. Google, in fact, canceled some AdSense accounts because of this practice several months ago (the same time that they canceled accounts for “made-for-AdSense” ... read more ...

What Would Microsoft-Yahoo Mean for Domainers? - The acquisition could mean a lot. Or maybe not. I had a conversation with myself this morning about Microsoft’s (MSFT) proposed buyout of Yahoo (YHOO). It went something like this: Me: So, Andrew, what do you think this deal will mean for domainers? Myself: Tough call. From a search perspective, this is #3 taking over #2. It will be interesting to see how they merge the two company’s pay-per-click platforms. Me: Yeah, both platforms lag Google Adwords. ... read more ...
