So we got a call from Register.com this week… - Registrar called about a renewal, and it was strange. If you have any domain names at a Web.com registrar (Register.com and Network Solutions), you know the company is big on marketing to its customer base. You literally get one email every day from the company, promoting everything from search engine optimization to Facebook pages. Most of them end up in your spam folder. This week I got a call from Register.com that was helpful in one way, but disconcerting in another. I won a domain name in a ... read more ...

Domain hunt progressing, though still not prepared for new tip turn domain names - Registrars are slowly improving their search results to show new top level domain name options, but the experience is far from ideal. Earlier this month I wrote about how domain name search at major registrars wasn’t ready for new top level domain names. I admitted it was early, as Donuts’ domain names had just come on to the market. It represented the first batch of English-language domains to become available. Now a few weeks later and over 100,000 new TLD registrations ... read more ...

Court Ruling on Baidu v. Register.com Has Implications for Domain Registrars - Court says registrars can’t get away with gross negligence just because it’s in their TOS. Register.com’s Customer Service Lie - J.D. Power should reconsider Register.com’s call center award. Domain name registrar Register.com likes to tout its J.D. Power and Associates call center certification. Perhaps their call center representatives are friendly, but the company’s policies make it difficult to get trivial things done. Fabulous’ Executive Lock Would Have Saved CheckFree.com - Service prevents nameserver changes without multiple levels of confirmation. In light of the CheckFree.com nameserver “theft” last week, I opined that registrars must offer added security for important domain names. Specifically, important domain names should require more than just a username and password in order to change the nameservers. It turns out at least one registrar has an official product offering to do just that: Fabulous offers Executive Lock. ... read more ...

Register.com Home Page is a Winner - Re-designed web site is simple. Competitors should take note. I had to make one of my infrequent visits to Register.com today to unlock a backordered domain for transfer. When I arrived at the home page I was greeted by a simple, yet bold home page: In a business where many companies believe “more is better”, Register.com is going for simplicity. You can’t miss the domain search box as it’s not shoved in between 50 promotions. The phone number is right ... read more ...

Domain Companies Need to Increase “Switching Costs” - The road to profits lies in an integrated approach to domain management. In the domain business there are low “switching costs”. A switching cost is the time and money you incur to change service providers. Consider domain parking, where you can move 1,000 domains from one parking company to another in about 15 minutes. Even switching registrars is relatively painless compared to many other service provider changes you do in the “offline” world. To see ... read more ...

A tip of the hat to GoDaddy Group, which runs GoDaddy.com, Wild West Domains, and Blue Razor, for crossing the 30 million domains registered mark. This number appears to reflect the total number of domains currently registered. Given expirations, that means GoDaddy has registered a lot more domains than that over its lifetime. Register.com Goes After Register.cc - Company files arbitration case with National Arbitration Forum. Domain registrar Register.com has filed a UDRP against another ICANN-accredited domain registrar, DomainIt, for its use of Register.cc. DomainIt, which manages 22,354 domains according to RegistrarStats, currently forwards register.cc to its main web site. This is an interesting case on a couple grounds.
