Moniker’s Money-Losing Auction - Nobody won during Saturday’s live auction. If you’re bummed about the results of Saturday’s live GeoDomain auction, which took in about $280,000, think about how Moniker feels. This live auction was a money loser for the company. Moniker’s gross cut from the live auction will be about $42,000. Then they have to pay a cut to Associated Cities (assumption), pay the auctioneer, pay for all of its staff’s travel to Chicago, the time it took organizing the ... read more ...

Moniker To Get Auction Competition during TRAFFIC Shows - Multiple live auction companies to host auctions at event. I’m sure there’s a backstory on this, but Rick Schwartz, who co-produces the TRAFFIC domain name conferences, just sent out an e-mail announcing that Moniker will no longer be the exclusive provider of domain auctions at his conferences. For the first time at any domain show we are going to have multiple live auctions presented by multiple auction houses. This is going to be a game changer! Howard and ... read more ...

Moniker Streamlines Auction Submission Process - No more e-mailing spreadsheets; Moniker enables online auction submissions. Anyone who has submitted a domain name to Moniker for inclusion in its auctions knows how much of a pain it can be. You have to fill out lots of data on a spreadsheet and send it into your account representative. Then you have to fill out and fax in a contract. Today, Moniker announced a new online submission process for auctions that significantly reduces the time and headaches. Here’s ... read more ...

Israel.com Has NOT Sold - Erroneous reports suggested domain name sold over the weekend. A number of erroneous reports hit the wire this morning that Israel.com sold for $5.88 million. I just got off the phone with Moniker’s CEO Monte Cahn and he told me these reports were incorrect and the domain name is still for sale. Apparently the rumors started when a publication, perhaps “TheMarker” or Haaretz, saw the reserve price in the Moniker silent auction and assumed that was a winning ... read more ...

2008 GeoDomain Expo Coming to Chicago - Conference for “hot” sector of domain names returns in July. It seems like everywhere you look, domainers are talking about “Geo” domains. Those in the geo space will tell you it’s been hot since the beginning, but they probably enjoy finally getting the respect they deserve. And that will be on display at this year’s GeoDomain Expo in Chicago July 11-12 at W Chicago – City Center. (There is a cocktail party the evening of July 10.) I’ve decided ... read more ...

ICANN Puts eNom and Moniker “On Notice” - eNom and Moniker were named in “Worst Spam Offenders” report. In the words of Stephen Colbert, ICANN has put eNom and Moniker “On Notice”. The two registrars were named in a recent report from KnujOn titled “The 10 Worst Registrars in terms of spam advertised junk product sites”. That title is a bit misleading, or perhaps I’m the only one who doesn’t quite understand how KnujOn calculated which registrars were worst. The report (pdf) considered a ... read more ...

Final Thoughts on TRAFFIC East - A look back at the latest TRAFFIC domain name show. I’ve read a few blog posts this weekend from people giving their opinion on the TRAFFIC show that just concluded in Orlando. Of course, half of these bloggers weren’t even there, so I don’t know how they can pass judgment on the show. I’m going to give you my thoughts, up to the time I left Friday afternoon during the auction. (After that point my experience went downhill, since a bellman at the Grand Floridian ... read more ...

Moniker Auction Nets $4.4 Million, SkiResorts.com sells for $850,000 - Moniker’s live domain auction ends with mixed results. If tonight’s domain name auction was a barometer for the domain industry, we know nothing more than we did before the auction began. The results were, well, mediocre. Before it began, I set a personal range for the auction. Anything less than $4 million would be a failure, anything greater than $6M would be a success. The auction ended up squarely in the middle, with $4.4 million changing hands (including ... read more ...

TrafficClub Closing Its Doors - Parking aggregater to shut down service at end of month. Moniker’s TrafficClub will shut its doors at the end of the month. TrafficClub allowed customers to maximize revenue from parked domains without moving domains between different parking companies. Last year DomainSponsor, citing a policy ... read more ...

February T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Auction Could Be Record-Setting - First cut at premium domain names looks promising. It’s been six months since Moniker and TRAFFIC teamed up to shatter a domain name auction record, selling over $10M in domains in an afternoon. Since that time no auctions have come close to this record. After reviewing the first cut of premium domains for next month’s TRAFFIC conference in Las Vegas, it looks like this one can shatter the previous record. There’s a big caveat though: it depends on the reserves ... read more ...
