eBay during 20 and a problem of building a market - Building a marketplace is hard, even in the domain name business. It’s crazy to think that it’s been 20 years since the first auction on eBay (then AuctionWeb). 20 years! So much has happened since then when it comes to the internet. eBay created a market of buyers and sellers, much like the two predominant domain name marketplaces (Sedo and Afternic) did. Here are a couple take-aways from this: 1. Creating a market is hard. A lot of people gripe about paying 20% commissions to Sedo and Afternic. ... read more ...

eBay Starts Paying Affiliates by a Click. Here’s Why. - eBay is no longer paying per sale. But the real reason isn’t so obvious. For years, online retailer and auction service eBay offered a traditional affiliate program. It paid affiliates for sending new registrations and sales to eBay, similar to how most online retailers pay a commission for sales. But as many companies try to move from PPC to a pay-for-performance model, eBay is going the opposite direction. Well, in name only. It’s still pay-for-performance, ... read more ...

PaintballGuns.com Auction Attracts Attention during eBay - eBay domain name auction attracting lots of bids. But the reserve has already been lowered once, and could be lowered again to strike a deal. So how much is this domain name worth? Fortunately ... read more ...

Anatomy of a Domain Name Press Release - Silly press releases for eBay auctions abound. Here’s how they work. OK, Elliot. You got me. Earlier today Elliot Silver sent me and e-mail with the subject “BREAKING DOMAIN NEWS”. The body of the e-mail read “Big News… thought you might want to cover this…” and then there was a link to a press release on PRweb. Elliot sends me news leads from time to time, so I anxiously clicked the link. That’s when I knew I’d been had. The link was for a press ... read more ...

Trademark Holders Shouldn’t Rush to Get New TLDs - .eBay probably not worth it. One of the examples the mass media has given for the potential of new TLDs is .ebay . “Imagine eBay (NADSAQ: EBAY) being able to create cars.ebay and electronics.ebay”, is the general line of thought. I’m imagining, and I’m not imagining much. Why not just ebay.com/cars? In general, I don’t think trademark holders should plop down the $185,000 to get their own top level domain. Combined with preparing the application and ... read more ...
