Donuts’ .Shopping found too identical to .shop, will be placed in row set - Once again, who the string confusion panelist is determines the outcome of an objection. A string confusion objection panelist has ruled that having both .shop and .shopping as top level domain names will confuse the average internet user, and thus both should not both be delegated as TLDs. It’s the latest string confusion objection that might cause some head scratching amongst observers in light of other decisions. For example, how are .hotel and .hotels OK but ... read more ...

Poll: How Long Until New Top Level Domain Names? - When do you think new TLDs will be available for registration? Another ICANN meeting has wrapped up. Blows were dealt to many, but some progress was made. With EOI off the table, the focus is on settling the “overarching issues”. The intellectual property constituency, which didn’t show up to Nairobi, was perhaps the biggest winner. New TLDs are going to happen. It’s a matter of when. During Domainer Mardi Gras, I asked my panel when they thought new TLDs ... read more ...

ICANN May Consider Pre-Applications for New Top Level Domain Names - New TLD backers to propose plan for parallel processes. There are a lot of uncertainties about new top level domain names, including how many applications will actually be submitted and what they will be for. This affects a number of things — root scaling, trademark concerns, and geo TLD concerns. For example, if it turns out only 50 TLD applications will be received, root scaling might not be an issue. With that, it looks like the community of likely new TLD ... read more ...

.Sport Asks, Just What is a Top Level Domain? - .Sport questions the definition of “top level”. If the .Sport Policy Advisory Council has its way, Shaq won’t be able to get his hands on the .basketball TLD. In a letter to ICANN Chairman Peter Dengate-Thrush and CEO Rod Beckstrom, the .Sport Policy Advisory Council suggests that a top level domain name should be the very top of a category, and anything less than that would diminish the importance of top level domain names. The letter states: …Thus, the ... read more ...

ICANN Advertises to a Mainstream, Update on New TLDs - Ad in The Economist likely the first of many. As I finished the Christmas Double Issue of The Economist, I flipped through the final pages of ads and was surprised to see this: Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) promised to do mainstream marketing for the launch of new top level domains, and this is the first ad I’ve seen. The tag line on the ad reads “New Generic Top Level Domains – Openness, Change, Innovation” I hope ICANN takes ... read more ...

Trademark Holders Shouldn’t Rush to Get New TLDs - .eBay probably not worth it. One of the examples the mass media has given for the potential of new TLDs is .ebay . “Imagine eBay (NADSAQ: EBAY) being able to create cars.ebay and electronics.ebay”, is the general line of thought. I’m imagining, and I’m not imagining much. Why not just ebay.com/cars? In general, I don’t think trademark holders should plop down the $185,000 to get their own top level domain. Combined with preparing the application and ... read more ...
