Dear Maxunis, Thanks for a Spam -
Auction seller sends (lots of) spam to promote his domain name.
Dear “Maxunis”,
I received your e-mail from maxunis@gmail.com this morning about your auction of a domain name on Sedo. In fact, all four of the e-mails. In your four e-mails (from your e-mail address maxunis@gmail.com) you wrote:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Your website features strongly in search engines when looking for “Adult Video” or “Adult Videos” and I believe this precise and short domain name ... read more ...

Sedo Introduces Authentication System -
After many complaints about incomplete deals, company offers three-tier verification system.
Sedo sells a lot of domains, but many of the domain sales on its site are never completed. A number of people — including readers of Domain Name Wire — have recommended that bidders be authenticated to cut down on bogus bidding.
Today Sedo introduced a three tier system for verification. Here’s how it works:
1. Tier 1 lets you bid on any domain under $10,000. You ... read more ...

Domain Parking’s Future: No More Long Tail -
Look for Google and Yahoo to cut out low traffic domains.
I’m at the Admirals Club in Dallas, en route to Orlando for TRAFFIC. On the short flight from Austin I read the latest Forbes, which includes a short article about domain names. Titled “Bo Knows Rico”, the article discusses a lawsuit against Google that has, among other plaintiffs, Bo Jackson (same case as Vulcan Golf). The plaintiffs contend that Google is aiding cybersquatters and benefiting from ... read more ...

Should we Set Minimum Offer Prices on Sedo? -
Should I set minimum offer prices or let people make any offer?
I’m always excited when I get an email from domain aftermarket Sedo informing me that I’ve received an offer on a domain name. That excitement usually turns to disappointment when I click through to see that the offer is for a measly $60. Please, it’s not even worth my time transferring the domain.
But this may be my fault. After all, you can set a “minimum offer” price on your domain listings. ... read more ...

Website Magazine Ranks “Domain Registrars” -
Website Magazine knows web sites. Not domains.
Website Magazine is a great free resource for domainers looking to develop their domains. But don’t turn to the publication for good advice on domain names.
In the May edition, the magazine profiles “Website Magazine’s Ranking of Domain Registrars” based on traffic to the registrars’ web sites. The problem is how the magazine defines “domain registrar”.
For example, Sedo is ranked #3.
Sedo is a great ... read more ...

Update: Selling Domain Names on eBay -
Is it worth trying to sell domain names on eBay? An experiment with Headcase.com.
Everyone knows that eBay’s domain name auctions are full of junk. I personally don’t spend any time looking for domains there.
But recently there have been some high profile domain auctions on the site. There are also new tools to sift through the junky domains and find winners.
I’ve decided to give eBay another shot, but this time as a seller. And with a good domain, not ... read more ...

When Will Pizza.com Dough Arrive? -
Sale yet to close. Will it?
[Update: Pizza.com has now sold.] People outside the domain world were surprised to see that Pizza.com sold for $2.6 million a few weeks ago. But those of us in the domain industry have been on edge ever since. We have one question: will the deal actually close?
As of today there’s no news on the deal. The whois on Pizza.com has been a private registration for many years, although Chris Clark’s (the seller) name is no longer attached ... read more ...

Sedo Upgrades Support System -
Sedo launches true online support system.
Sedo is a big success in the domain industry especially for a company that exploded onto the scene earlier this decade. But one complaint I hear is that its support is non-existent. Although non-existent is a bit of a stretch, I certainly share in this frustration.
The key problem as I see it is that it doesn’t (didn’t) have a centralized support system (at least that customers could see). You would send a support email ... read more ...

An auction for Pizza.com is attracting attention at Sedo. The domain has 63 bids and a current price of $2,505,000 USD as of the time of writing. That’s a whole lotta pizza — about a quarter million medium pepperoni pizzas. Although bids are still subject to verification, this sale could enliven the entire domain name market. Domain sales site to open up auction platform to individual domain owners.
Afternic plans to open up its auction feature this year to allow individual domain owners to submit domains for auction, the company disclosed in an online web conference. Currently, Afternic’s auctions only include domains that have met their reserve. I imagine this will work somewhat like Sedo’s auctions, where you can list qualified domains with a specific closing time but retain a ... read more ...

More Domain Name Parking Changes Coming -
Ad providers continue to change rules.
If you thought the death of Yahoo arbitrage and the Ask.com feed was the end of the upheaval in domain parking, think again.
It appears ad providers are now changing rules for landing page formats and content. Sedo has been testing adding non-paid, organic search results on parked pages as apparently mandated by Google. So far it looks like this only applies when someone clicks on a “related search” link on parked pages, ... read more ...
