Google Chrome Domain Names - Google remained tight-lipped about its new browser. So who registered GoogleChrome.com a month ago? By now you’ve probably read that Google is releasing a web browser called Google Chrome. Perhaps you’re feeling the same way I am: great, one more browser to optimize for. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) did a good job keeping the lid on its browser announcement. There have been rumors of a Google browser for many years, in part because the domain name GBrowser.com was ... read more ...

Update: Domain Parking Still Converting - Here’s more proof that domain parking converts for advertisers. About a month ago I wrote about how the domain channel at Google was converting well for me, even though a number of advertisers would tell you otherwise. Now that I have a month more of data for my ad campaign at Google, the parking channel is still performing very well. In fact, it’s performing just as well as my ads that show up on Google and the Google search network. Content is also performing ... read more ...

Google Thinks You Like TheDomains.com - Google Ad Planner offers some wicked cool data. Some is useful for domainers. Yesterday I took Jay Westerdal’s advice and signed up for Google Ad Planner. This tool provides incredible site statistics to estimate traffic for just about any web site. I think the traffic stats in Google underestimate traffic for many sites, including Domain Name Wire and DNJournal. But the richness of data puts all other sources, including the easily-gamed Alexa, to shame. One ... read more ...

Domain and Search Tools Integrate New Google Data - Popular software programs tap into new Google search count data. A couple weeks ago Google launched a new “Overture score” type of tool that lets you see estimated search counts for keywords. (See Google Releases “Overture Score”-Like Tool.) Tool providers that cater to the search and domain businesses have been working overtime to use the new data in their systems. One of the tools that now uses the Google data is Adword Analyzer. This software pulls ... read more ...

Update: Google Parking Changes and Arbitrage - What effect will Google’s changes in domain parking have on domainers? Over the weekend Julia Mackenzie scooped that Google was planning changes to domain parking. I reached out to Sedo and DomainSponsor to find out when these changes will be implemented and any details. DomainSponsor declined to comment. Sedo CEO Tim Schumacher said: “While we cannot discuss the confidential nature of our relationships with partners, Sedo generally welcomes any change which ... read more ...

Rumor Watch: Google to Restrict Domain Parking - Here’s an update on Google’s domain parking program. I usually don’t write about rumors, but Julia Mackenzie of IsItMeOrIsEveryoneElseStupid.com has never floated a rumor without it being true. She’s reporting that a reliable source informed her that Google is going to lay the hammer down on domain parking. Essentially, the company will only serve parking ads to domains it believes have a chance of receiving type-in traffic and conversions: This new algo ... read more ...

Domain Name Stocks Pummeled in 2008 - Stocks of domain name companies take beating with the market — and beyond. It’s been a rough year for stock markets, and domain name companies’ stocks are having a tough run as well. The good news is that two “pure play” domain companies’ stocks are performing much better than the market overall. Here’s a quick run down of domain related stocks and how they are doing year-to-date as of yesterday’s close. For comparison, the SP 500 is down 15% this ... read more ...

Google Sued Over Parked Domain Names - Lawsuit alleges ads on parked domains are low quality and unlikely to convert. A lawyer has sued Google claiming that none of his ads on parked domain names converted into leads, and that Google didn’t provide an easy way to opt out of domain parking, writes Information Week. The lawyer spent $136.11 on ads on parked domains and error pages. He got 668 clicks and zero conversions, according to the lawsuit. According to the article, the lawsuit alleges that “Google ... read more ...

YouTube Goes Geo - YouTube adds local search functions. Video site YouTube is releasing a new feature to let people find videos tagged with a particular geographic location. Why is this relevant to domainers? Well, I’m sitting here in the Admirals Club in Austin getting ready to board my flight to the Associated Cities GeoDomain Expo in Chicago. At the conference I’ll see a hundred people who are big believers in “local search” and are betting big on the future of local search. Local ... read more ...

Google Releases “Overture Score”-Like Tool - Enhancement to keyword tool provides domainers with more accurate tool to forecast domain traffic. “Three cheers for Google!” That’s not something you hear many domainers say these days. But Google has just released a new feature on its Keyword Tool that will bring a smile to domainers’ faces: search volumes. The tools is similar to the famed Overture inventory tool that showed you how many times someone searched for a particular keyword or domain. For example, ... read more ...

Will Cost Per Action Replace Cost Per Click? - The future of cost-per-click is questionable. Cost-per-click advertising, such as Google Adwords, is a staple of the internet advertising industry. It is also the primary form of advertising used to monetize parked domain names. But will CPC give way to CPA (cost per action)? First, a little history. It used to be that many affiliate programs were actually CPC programs. You would sign up as an affiliate and the program would pay you a few cents for each click. ... read more ...

Click Forensics, Publishers, Ad Networks Facing Traffic Quality Challenge - Meeting in Austin brings together constituents to discuss improving online advertising results — for everyone. The long term survival of domain name monetization — be it domain parking or otherwise — depends on giving advertisers bang for their buck. The past two days I attended a closed-door summit led by traffic quality experts Click Forensics that addressed delivering value to advertisers. The group discussed how everyone can work together to improve all ... read more ...

Update: Google Organic Search Results Requirement - Follow up to March announcement by Sedo about new Google requirements for parked pages. Back in March Domain Name Wire reported that Sedo was testing the placement of organic search results on its domain parking pages. This is a requirement from Google (NASDAQ: GOOG). According to Sedo’s web site, this will be rolled out across domains in its network starting this week. The organic search results will only be displayed on Google’s search feed pages, not content ... read more ...

Coming Soon: Google Ads On Yahoo Parked Domains? - Yahoo-Google partnership may deliver Google ads on Yahoo-parked domains. Before everyone in the domain industry starts freaking out about the Google (GOOG)- Yahoo (YHOO) partnership (and there are plenty of reasons to worry), there may be some good news. I just finished listening to Yahoo’s shareholder conference call, and it’s clear that Google ads will also be shown on Yahoo’s publisher network. Whether or not that includes parked domains is unknown, but ... read more ...

Final Thoughts on TRAFFIC East - A look back at the latest TRAFFIC domain name show. I’ve read a few blog posts this weekend from people giving their opinion on the TRAFFIC show that just concluded in Orlando. Of course, half of these bloggers weren’t even there, so I don’t know how they can pass judgment on the show. I’m going to give you my thoughts, up to the time I left Friday afternoon during the auction. (After that point my experience went downhill, since a bellman at the Grand Floridian ... read more ...

Overheard during TRAFFIC - Here’s a quick summary of what’s gone on at TRAFFIC the past 24 hours. The mood at TRAFFIC is somewhat subdued right now, but that may be the massive hangover from last night’s TrafficZ party. A lot of beer was consumed and things didn’t settle down until four in the morning. This morning several domain investors and service providers discussed the fallout of pay-per-click and parked page revenue and what can be done to diversify. The session started off ... read more ...

Domain Parking’s Future: No More Long Tail - Look for Google and Yahoo to cut out low traffic domains. I’m at the Admirals Club in Dallas, en route to Orlando for TRAFFIC. On the short flight from Austin I read the latest Forbes, which includes a short article about domain names. Titled “Bo Knows Rico”, the article discusses a lawsuit against Google that has, among other plaintiffs, Bo Jackson (same case as Vulcan Golf). The plaintiffs contend that Google is aiding cybersquatters and benefiting from ... read more ...

Arbitrage is Alive and Well on Google’s Content Network - Google’s content advertising network is full of pay-per-click arbitrage ads. I recently bought a web site about 529 college savings plans (more on that later) and added Google Adsense (NASDAQ: GOOG) ads to it. For the first couple days, almost all of the ads Google showed were for pay-per-click arbitrage sites. Most of these ads had generic descriptions such as: Looking for information on 529 plans? Learn more about 529 plans. Expert Advice. www.some-long-keyword-infused-url.com Now ... read more ...

Microhoo: Now What for Domainers? - Acquisition talks collapse…what it means for domainers. I’ve been torn about Microsoft’s proposed takeover of Yahoo! It could have been good for domainers but it also had a downside. Now that Microsoft (MSFT) has told Yahoo (YHOO) to “go search itself”, where does that leave the domain industry? My main concern is that Yahoo will get more in bed with Google (GOOG) for its advertising. Yahoo has already tried outsourcing some of its advertising inventory ... read more ...

A Google – Yahoo Partnership That Makes Sense - How can Yahoo team up with Google? Think international. News reports suggest Yahoo’s two week trial running Google ads is going very well. So well, in fact, that the companies are discussing expanding the relationship. That news should scare anyone in the domain name industry and any publisher that uses Google Adsense. If Yahoo exits the stage, look for payout percentages to decrease. But there is one partnership deal Yahoo (YHOO) and Google (GOOG) could strike ... read more ...

Survey: Sedo Top Domain Name Parking Service - For the second year in a row, Sedo tops the Domain Name Wire survey. Sedo is the top choice for parking domain names, according to a survey of 841 domain name industry participants. 48% of those surveyed picked Sedo as the best domain name parking program. Last year Sedo was the winner as well but only garnered 32% of the vote. In the 2006 survey Sedo only pulled in 19%. With domain parking in upheavel, Sedo has escaped relatively unscathed. Yahoo May Outsource Pay-Per-Click to Google - If expanded, deal would hurt domainers. Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) has started a test with Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) to determine if it can make more money using Google’s ad feed than its own, reports Wall Street Journal. The deal involves 3% of search queries on Yahoo’s site, which will show Google Adsense for Search ads instead of Yahoo’s own search ads. Yahoo is trying to show that it has greater revenue potential that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) gives it. Essentially, ... read more ...

YouTube Chases Down YouTube.net - Google files arbitration for Youtube.net. Google (GOOG) and its YouTube division have filed for arbitration under UDRP to get control of the YouTube.net domain name. YouTube.net’s whois record currently shows an owner in China, and the domain appears to have bounced around between a couple different owners over the past year. Hey, Take a Chill Pill! - The domain industry isn’t perfect, but you need not run for the hills. I got a kick out of a message posted on Rick Schwartz’s blog after he announced he would stop blogging: I hope you all realize what is going on here. The message should be loud and clear. Rick has been warning everybody all year to help him mount a defense against what is coming. Very few are paying attention, and very few are helping him build the fort to protect against the coming invaders. ... read more ...
