Domain registrar GoDaddy has redesigned its web site making it easier to use. The design has simple navigation controls at the top, less clutter, and a new left panel that shows the user’s products. Upon your first visit to the redesigned site there’s a quick tour feature.

GoDaddy Files Patent for “Domain Name Hijack Protection” -
Patent covers system to automatically reject domain name transfers.
GoDaddy has filed a patent for a system to protect against domain name theft. The patent lists GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons as the sole inventor and was filed last year, but was not published until this month.
United States Patent Application 20080215716 describes a service subscribed to by customers in which domain transfer-out notices are automatically ignored. A notice is sent to the customer informing ... read more ...

GoDaddy Tries Paper Domain Renewal Notices -
GoDaddy is sending snail mail domain renewal notices
Over the weekend I received a snail mail from GoDaddy. Yeah, one of those things you get in the metal box with a flag on it. Big bright orange letters on the outside read “RENEWAL NOTICE!”:
This is the first time I recall receiving snail mail from GoDaddy. At first I assumed GoDaddy was trying paper mailers to improve domain renewal rates. But all of the domain names listed in the renewal letter are set ... read more ...

Domain Name Conspiracy Theories -
Everyone’s got them. But not all of them are true.
Spend much time on domain name forums or at trade shows and you’ll hear a lot of conspiracy theories: auction tampering, domain renewal notices “lost” on purpose, etc.
I hear more than my fair share. Every week I get a few tips from people that turn out to be completely false. Sometimes I spend a couple hours investigating; other times I can dismiss them within a few minutes.
For example, there was ... read more ...

GoDaddy Drops .Net and .Org Prices -
Seesaw price changes head in a good direction.
A week after increasing .net and .org domain registration prices, GoDaddy has dropped the price. This is the third price change in recent weeks.
First, prices went up to $13.19 each. Then they shot up another $2.00 to $15.19. Now they are $11.19 each including fees.
It’s clear that GoDaddy is testing pricing to see its effect on volume. My guess is the increase to $15.19 dropped new registrations and add-on sales ... read more ...

GoDaddy Jacks Up Domain Prices — Again -
.Net and .Org prices jump to $15.19.
Just a few days after we swallowed the news that GoDaddy increased .net and .org prices to 13.19, and a few weeks after the company claimed Yahoo “Jumped the Shark” by raising its domain prices to $35, GoDaddy has hiked prices again.
.Net and .Org domain names will now set you back $15.19. It’s not as big of a deal as Yahoo’s (NASDAQ: YHOO) hike to $35, but it seems odd to call out a competitor for drastically raising ... read more ...

GoDaddy’s 60 Day Transfer Lock Closer to Termination -
GNSO Council approves changes to domain transfer blocks.
One of GoDaddy’s most complained about policies is that it blocks transfers of domain names that have had certain changes to their whois information within the past 60 days.
In September 2007 ICANN began working on an advisory that targeted transfer blocks like this. After ICANN finalized its advisory this past April I was happy to report that GoDaddy appeared to be allowing transfers even if changes were ... read more ...

dotMobi to Enforce Compliance Rules for Premium Domains (Eventually) -
dotMobi says it will start to enforce guidelines for domains won at auction.
In June I wrote a second article about premium dotMobi domain names that were won at auctions at Sedo. At the time, not a single domain won at the first Sedo auction was in compliance. Compliance basically requires a dotMobi compatible parking page followed by a mobile web site within 6 months. Although it’s not surprising that few of the domains had real web sites within 6 months, ... read more ...

Domain Companies Need to Increase “Switching Costs” -
The road to profits lies in an integrated approach to domain management.
In the domain business there are low “switching costs”. A switching cost is the time and money you incur to change service providers.
Consider domain parking, where you can move 1,000 domains from one parking company to another in about 15 minutes. Even switching registrars is relatively painless compared to many other service provider changes you do in the “offline” world.

GoDaddy Hikes Price of .Net and .Org Domain Names to $13.19 -
You’ve been paying more at the pump. Now you’re paying more at the registrar.
I’m not sure when this happened, but a reader pointed out that GoDaddy has hiked prices on .net and .org domain names to $13.19 per domain. That’s a 30% increase.
This is probably just a business decision by GoDaddy to maximize profit. It can easily calculate how many .net and .org sales it loses and determine if the price hike is worth it.
When I asked GoDaddy about its ... read more ...

Registries Must Lobby GoDaddy for Success -
GoDaddy’s power in domain registration cannot be ignored.
Here’s a tip to any registries for new domains coming online in the next couple years: before you create your marketing strategy and invest in infrastructure, go cozy up with your new pal Bob Parsons at GoDaddy.
Registries make money when more domains are registered as they get a typically flat fee for each domain registered. For example, VeriSign gets $6.42 for each .com domain registered.

The Danger of a Domain Registrar “Run on a Bank” -
What happens when a domain registrar is in jeopardy?
[Editor’s note: this is a follow up article to “A Run on the (Domain Name) Bankâ€, originally published on Domain Name Wire on November 13, 2007.]
We’ve seen a lot of “runs on the bank” recently. Rumors spread that a bank is about to collapse. Nervous customers start pulling their money out of the bank, thus fulfilling the prophecy that the bank will collapse.

Free User Interface Advice for Domain Companies -
Domain companies aren’t known for good user interfaces. Here are a few suggestions to help.
A user interface designer charges a couple hundred bucks an hour to help companies improve user experience at their web sites. I’m not a UI designer, but I do have some free advice for a few domain companies. Disclaimer: advice is worth what you pay for it.

Recap: Domain Name Auction Firestorm -
Here’s a look back at the firestorm that hit domain auctions over the past two weeks.
It’s been a busy week at Domain Name Wire. And perhaps a busier week for GoDaddy. Here’s a run down of what took place and what it means for the industry.
It all started when a reader tipped me off to a thread at NamePros. The thread started out benign and was simply about the number of .us domain names going through auction at GoDaddy’s TDNAM and the high prices they ... read more ...

GoDaddy Bans Employees from Bidding on TDNAM -
Domain registrar changes policy on employee bidding.
GoDaddy has changed its policy on employees bidding in TDNAM domain name auctions after a firestorm erupted last week (and over the weekend).
Domain Name Wire’s original story, which was based on a thread from NamePros and additional information from a reader, put a hot topic in the limelight. At first it was confined to the domain name industry, but over the weekend the story appeared on Slashdot, Ycombinator, ... read more ...

GoDaddy Group Registers 30 Millionth Domain Name -
RulesofSaving.com, registered by a Connecticut man yesterday, pushes company over milestone.
A tip of the hat to GoDaddy Group, which runs GoDaddy.com, Wild West Domains, and Blue Razor, for crossing the 30 million domains registered mark. This number appears to reflect the total number of domains currently registered. Given expirations, that means GoDaddy has registered a lot more domains than that over its lifetime.
According to RegistrarStats.com, GoDaddy.com ... read more ...

Expired Domain Services Let Employees Bid Against Customers -
Two of the major services let employees compete with domainers.
[Note: See update at bottom of article.]
Earlier today a reader tipped me off to a discussion at NamePros about GoDaddy’s TDNAM service. Apparently GoDaddy VP (and owner of DNForum) Adam Dicker won a couple auctions for domains through the service. Dicker runs the aftermarket service. The reader was surprised that GoDaddy let its employees bid against its customers and push bid prices up:

Who Owns Hillary4McCain.com? DomainTools To a Rescue -
A bit of research turns up a probable registrant of Hillary4McCain.com.
I read a story on Wired.com today about the domain name Hillary4Mccain.com, which was registered with bogus whois information. The John McCain camp denies having anything to do with the domain.
So who owns the domain? I did a little research on DomainTools, and it leads to one person: Charles Reyna.
Here’s what I did:
1. Looked up Hillary4McCain.com
2. Did a reverse IP search to see the ... read more ...

GoDaddy Playing Hardball with NeuStar? -
Pricing at GoDaddy for NeuStar’s .us and .biz domains is oddly high.
In February I wrote about GoDaddy’s price increase for .biz domain names. The registrar was charging $14.99 for .biz domain names, even though its wholesale cost at the registry is about the same as .com domain names (which GoDaddy sells for $9.99). It appeared that GoDaddy was just trying to make some extra profit.
But a couple weeks ago a friend pointed out that I may have missed the boat ... read more ...

Domain registrar and web hosting company files patents for aggregating social network sites.
The world’s biggest domain registrar, GoDaddy, may be looking to social networking to grow its business.
