CHIPs, Numbers, and other lapsed domain name sales - Joseph Peterson analyzes the past week of expired domain name sales.
Once again, China tops these charts – but not in the customary way. Rather than numerical domains, 4-letter “CHIPs”, or even Chinese Pinyin, we’re looking at an English domain about China: ChinaTech.com.
The auction outcome itself ($4.7k) isn’t at all unusual, since domains that can serve as upgrades for multiple existing websites often fetch high prices. And that’s the case, based on brands like these:
China-Tech.com
ChinaTech.com.tw
ChinaTechNews.com
AllChinaTech.com
ChinaTech.com.vn
ChinaTechSourcing.co.uk
etc.

Expired domain name report: 1280.com for $26k and more - Joseph Peterson’s weekly roundup of expired domain name sales.
The sadist in me contemplates a cruel reality TV show in which some unsuspecting person answers a knock on the door to find a camera crew pointed right at him. “John Q. Public, you’ve just won $26,010!” Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he sees a beaming fashion model holding out to him a cartoonish bag of money. Then, just as our surprised victim reaches for that bulging prize, Alex Trebek blurts out: “Wait a sec! You let the ... read more ...

Expired Domain Name Roundup including Moviez.com for $11k - Joseph Peterson reviews the past week in domain name sales at NameJet.
At some point, yours truly will stop pointing out the fault line between Chinese and Western domain sales in these charts, inasmuch as I’m beginning to sound like a broken record! Still, for the benefit of those readers who are just now joining us, I’ll reiterate: Week after week, domain auctions at NameJet are dominated by purchases addressing either the U.S. or the Chinese market; and it’s always a tossup which group ... read more ...

NameJet lapsed domain name review - Joseph Peterson reviews the past week in NameJet expired domain name sales.
5-digit numeric domains don’t typically sell for $9,120, but one expired NNNNN.com did just that at NameJet last week. 51513.com = 3 x 7 x 11 x 223, in case you care about prime factorization, which the odds are you don’t. Apart from Chinese cryptographers, neither does China, where numbers matter less than numeral strings. These Indo-Arabic numerals of ours belong equally as much to Chinese children, who can rattle ... read more ...

A demeanour behind during November’s NameJet Sales -
November for Namejet – as measured by domain auctions that closed above $2,000 – was a slow month. Just one month prior, 12 out of the 66 charted sales surpassed $10k, with the highest attaining $91.8k; but last month only 1 out of 61 sales climbed into the 5 digits. To be fair, the high end of the domain market is always the most erratic. Trends are mainly to be found in the low and mid-value ranges and over a longer period of time.
Interestingly, activity ... read more ...

EDR: Weird lapsed domain sales (partially) explained -
This week’s Expired Domain Report (EDR) explains why some domains sell for what they do, plus a preview of domains you might want to backorder.
Why do people bid on expired domain auctions? The number of bidders and the prices are often surprisingly high; so it’s a fair question.
FingerYoga.com is a case in point. Who bought this 12-year-old domain isn’t yet clear. But there were 83 bids as high as $2,227. Were those bidders looking to create a new website? ... read more ...

Oops…U.S. Government lets Medicaid.com expire, now in private hands -
Domain expired in January and wasn’t renewed despite plenty of warning.
The official site for Medicaid, the U.S. health program for lower income families and individuals, is Medicaid.gov.
But you can bet many people looking for information about the program type in Medicaid.com instead of .gov. Up until January 29th, the U.S. government helpfully forwarded Medicaid.com to Medicaid.gov…
Then it let the domain expire.
Last month Tennessee company Medx Publishing ... read more ...

SnapNames releases iPhone App -
Bidding on the go now much easier.
SnapNames just released an iPhone app to make it easier to bid on SnapNames auctions on the go.
The app makes it easier for customers to update bids and see current bidding history from a mobile phone. It does not allow you to place new backorders or bids on domains if you haven’t already done so on the SnapNames web site.
However, the app has a quick link to the SnapNames.mobi mobile site. There you can search for new domain names ... read more ...

VeriSign Devises Way to Sell More Expiring Domain Names -
System would discount price of domain names until a buyer is found.
VeriSign has devised a system to sell more dropping domain names by discounting their price over time.
Details of the idea are in a patent application the company filed in 2009 that was just published today.

South African Airways Blames Service Providers for Domain Expiration -
SAA plays the blame game.
South African Airways (SAA) is blaming service providers for letting its domain name expire, causing a web site outtage. When the domain name expired, Network Solutions followed its standard practice of changing the DNS and sending visitors to a landing page.
In a note from SAA acting CEO Chris Smyth on the company’s web site, Smyth writes:
…This outage was not as a result of any oversight by SAA or its personnel, nor was this due to ... read more ...

Domain Expiration Comments to ICANN Working Group -
My comments on expired domains.
As I wrote last week, ICANN is seeking feedback on the domain expiration process. Here’s the feedback I just submitted. The deadline for submitting feedback is September 10…
I believe most registrars do an effective job informing customers of upcoming expirations. For example, Go Daddy sends multiple expiration notices by email and even postal mail. Most registrars continue to send these expiration notices after a domain expires. ... read more ...

GoDaddy has informed Domain Name Wire that it is changing the way it handles backorders for domains not registered at one of The Go Daddy Group’s domain name registrars.

Survey: Which Expired Domain Name Service is Best? -
Aha! That “novel” wasn’t submitted for some reason! Luckily I saved it before I clicked “submit”. But some editing was lost, so please be forgiving. Here it is, again:
+++++
H*ll yes, I will choose Snapnames first over any of the others.
Reasons? For Dub-A, I will come out of my normally shy and quiet demeanor, and be uncharacteristically blunt:
1) Snapnames has consistently run a well-managed expiring domain service for at least four years (although they’ve been around ... read more ...

What Should Domain Registrars Do with Expired Domain Names? -
Perhaps letting domain registrars do as they please is OK.
For the 2009 Domain Name Wire Survey I added a new option for the most important factors when selecting a domain registrar: what they do with expired domains.
With all the commotion over what domain registrars do when domains expire (e.g. GoDaddy and Tucows), I wondered if this affected peoples’ decisions about which registrar to use.
Apparently not; it was ranked the least important factor when choosing ... read more ...

GoDaddy Changes Expired Domain Pricing -
In response to Standard Tactics coverage, GoDaddy has changed starting bids on TDNAM auctions.
Last week I mentioned that GoDaddy was making a change to its TDNAM auctions based on some of my commentary on Standard Tactics. In my commentary I had suggested that, by setting minimum bid prices higher than the standard $10 bid price, GoDaddy was effectively bidding against its customers on TDNAM.
In response, GoDaddy has changed how it prices expired domains. All domains ... read more ...
