Patent is mostly about whois proxy email services.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted patent number 8,751,685 (pdf) to GoDaddy for “Domain name hijack protection”.
The patent, applied for in 2010, is actually a divisional patent of an application I wrote about in 2008. The earlier patent application hasn’t been granted yet.
The majority of the patent is about whois proxy services (e.g. DomainsByProxy) rather than domain theft prevent; It’s a ... read more ...

.Ninja sponsors the X Games.
We’ve talked quite a bit on this blog about the need for top level domain name registries to promote their new domain names to end users. Here’s a great example of a company doing just that.
The X Games came to Austin for the first time this past weekend. The young audience is a great target for the .ninja domain name, and .Ninja owner Rightside was there promoting the new name.

Ad Impersonation Is The New Click Fraud - Lori Weiman wrote an interesting piece on Search Engine Land a few hours ago, the article focused on a different type of click fraud. PPC Ad impersonation occurs when an impostor advertiser takes a well known website address, and uses it as the display URL of their own advertisement.
From the article:
When you first hear about PPC fraud rings, you tend to think of click fraud where an automated system, not a real person, is generating fake clicks on an advertiser’s ad. However, PPC impersonation ... read more ...
New gTLD Community Objection Standing Analysis -
The notion of community has been debated since the inception of the ICANN New gTLD Program. However, as far as we know no one has yet taken a holistic approach to analyzing the wealth of information generated by the experts who participated in the ICANN New gTLD community objection process.
As a community applicant for .eco on behalf of the environmental community, Big Room Inc. has a keen interest in understanding how independent experts are interpreting the ICANN notion of community.

Brand Protection Fail!: 25 More Trademarked Domains Drop Including MicrosoftSoftware.com - As we go through Drop lists of domain name in an attempt to acquire some of them, we typically see a good number of what appear to be trademark infringing domain names.
As usual we do not point out typo’s but mostly domain names that seem to be right in the wheel house of a trademark holders.
Trademark holders have been complaining (and rightly so) about the cost of defensive registrations when it comes to new gTLD’s but these domains are all .com and many have traffic.

gTLD registrations soar, but many brands are falling behind -
The number of new gTLD registrations has broken the million mark, with ‘xyz’ supplanting ‘.club’ as the most popular string. While online discussion centres on just how it achieved this feat, an equally interesting question is how much of the demand has come from big brands.
At the end of May, World Trademark Review reported that, with heavyweight endorser 50 Cent throwing his weight behind the string, ‘.club’ had shot to the top of the gTLD registrations table. Over the past ... read more ...

8 Things We Learned from GoDaddy’s IPO filing -
GoDaddy filed its S-1 today to go public. I’ve skimmed the 250 pages to compile these seven data points that weren’t previously known.
1. GoDaddy has a lot of customers: 11.548M, to be exact.
2. The company had 2013 revenue of $1.13B. It breaks down like this: $672M from domains (and add-ons like privacy), $381M from hosting and $77M from business apps. Oh, and 24% of the revenue comes from its Customer Service reps selling to customers.
3. Its GAAP loss was $199.9M ... read more ...

No, this article isn’t about whether .xyz or .club should be considered the most registered new domain name so far.
