Frank Schilling: could be 20,000 or 30,000 TLDs in 20 years -
Says “these are not pie-in-the-sky” numbers and second level domains could be seen as “antiquated”.
Domain name investor Frank Schilling applied for 54 top level domains via his new TLD company Uniregistry.
I remember asking him before the new TLD reveal day about what his plans were, and he characterized them as “not big”.
54 doesn’t seem like a big number to me, but when you consider Schilling’s perspective on how the naming system will change in ... read more ...

Art.SY Startup Now Artsy.net -
A year and a half ago, I wrote about an art Internet startup company called Artsy, which used Art.SY for its domain name. At the time of my article, I asked whether a company could have success using the Syria ccTLD for its domain name and if the .SY ccTLD could become popular as a result.
I just read about the apparent ongoing Internet blackout in Syria right now, and after remembering the article I wrote, I checked on Art.SY. Apparently, it seems that the company has decided not to ... read more ...

Syria disappears off the face of the internet -
It looks like internet access into and out of Syria has been deliberately shut down.
Just take a look at this traffic graph from Akamai, showing a dramatic and abrupt change at about 18:45 UTC.
Umbrella Security Labs report that Syria's two TLD servers - ns1.tld.sy and ns2.tld.sy - are unreachable.
Sure enough, if you try to reach Syrian websites right now - you'll probably find it impossible.
It's not clear what has caused the problem, but there will no doubt be speculation as to whether ... read more ...

Jacqueline Lipton5/7/13
Most readers are probably aware that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recently introduced a process to open up the domain system to a myriad of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs). In this context “generic” may be somewhat of a misnomer, because a number of the domains applied for correspond with proprietary trademarks ... read more ...

ICANN launches Trademark Clearinghouse protection for trade mark holders … -
On 26 March 2013, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) launched the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). It is envisaged that the Trademark Clearinghouse will provide a database for individuals and businesses to register their brands, ahead of the release of around 2,000 generic top-level domains (‘gTLDs’), eg, ‘.news’, later this year.

ADNDRC Bars UDRP on Stolen Domain 6543.com - Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Center (the ADNDRC) denied a UDRP on the domain name 6543.com
A domain which it appears was allegedly stolen from the complainant.
The Respondent didn’t file a response.
We have noted before that UDRP’s are not set up for the return of a stolen domain.
Here the complainant didn’t even allege a trademark right to the domain, not even a common law right.
What the panel did however seems to be to call out Godaddy.com the registrar of the domain.

Google Starts Treating More Country-Code Top-Level Domains as Generic TLDs -
It can sometimes be annoying when you're searching for a company’s website, only to fall victim to geotargeting. Or worse, you're a multinational company, but your country level top-level domain is making ranking outside of your country an issue, even when it ranks fairly well within the country. And sometimes people are just registering certain country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) because they are trendy, especially for marketing purposes.
Google has just updated its list of ccTLDs they ... read more ...

My initial domain sale by DomainNameSales.com -
I sold my first domain through DNS. What have your experiences been?
Last week I completed my first domain sale using the Internet Traffic/DomainNameSales.com platform.
One thing that is a bit confusing at first is how the communications work inside the DomainNameSales.com platform. The platform is “open”, meaning you can handle domain inquiries yourself or use a number of third party brokers (including DNS itself, like what I chose). By using an outside broker ... read more ...
