The 2008 GeoDomain Expo hits Chicago July 10-12. Advanced ticket sales are hot, and Associated Cities’ Patrick Carleton expects attendance to be double last year. I recently caught up with Carleton to get a preview of this year’s conference. Afterward, Carleton did a lengthy interview that was published on the Associated Cities’ web site. You can read it here.

XsitePro 2 Web Site Creation Software Releases to New Customers -
Long-awaited upgrade to software released today.
Web site creation software XsitePro, which Domain Name Wire has reviewed before, released its upgrade V2 to new customers today. V2 has been available to previous customers for about a month, so I’ve had a chance to test drive it. I’ve even read most of the 1,000 page manual. But it’s not that complicated — it’s only when you dig deep into the features that you even need to open the manual.
Assuming you’ve ... read more ...

Coming Soon: Google Ads On Yahoo Parked Domains? -
Yahoo-Google partnership may deliver Google ads on Yahoo-parked domains.
Before everyone in the domain industry starts freaking out about the Google (GOOG)- Yahoo (YHOO) partnership (and there are plenty of reasons to worry), there may be some good news.
I just finished listening to Yahoo’s shareholder conference call, and it’s clear that Google ads will also be shown on Yahoo’s publisher network. Whether or not that includes parked domains is unknown, but ... read more ...

2008 GeoDomain Expo Coming to Chicago -
Conference for “hot” sector of domain names returns in July.
It seems like everywhere you look, domainers are talking about “Geo” domains. Those in the geo space will tell you it’s been hot since the beginning, but they probably enjoy finally getting the respect they deserve. And that will be on display at this year’s GeoDomain Expo in Chicago July 11-12 at W Chicago – City Center. (There is a cocktail party the evening of July 10.)

Final Thoughts on TRAFFIC East -
A look back at the latest TRAFFIC domain name show.
I’ve read a few blog posts this weekend from people giving their opinion on the TRAFFIC show that just concluded in Orlando. Of course, half of these bloggers weren’t even there, so I don’t know how they can pass judgment on the show.
I’m going to give you my thoughts, up to the time I left Friday afternoon during the auction. (After that point my experience went downhill, since a bellman at the Grand Floridian ... read more ...

Wall Street Journal reporter David Kesmodel’s book about the domain industry, “The Domain Game”, will be released soon. He just launched a web site about the book at theDomainGame.org. The start of the book reads:
In the fall of 2002, a thirty-three-year-old man living in the Cayman Islands made a rather unorthodox financial decision. He took all of his family’s savings, which totaled ... read more ...

Domain Development is harder than Domain Parking -
Leonard Holmes of ParkQuick details the trials and tribulations of domain development.
by Leonard Holmes
Are you getting tired of parking domains? Are you serious about developing?
For the past 12 months I have been paying $800 a month to an educational organization to learn web development, Internet marketing, and SEO. This is a lot of money, and I ask myself every few months whether it is really worth it. So far I have decided that it is. Stompernet has been ... read more ...

Arbitrage is Alive and Well on Google’s Content Network -
Google’s content advertising network is full of pay-per-click arbitrage ads.
I recently bought a web site about 529 college savings plans (more on that later) and added Google Adsense (NASDAQ: GOOG) ads to it. For the first couple days, almost all of the ads Google showed were for pay-per-click arbitrage sites. Most of these ads had generic descriptions such as:

Website Magazine Ranks “Domain Registrars” -
Website Magazine knows web sites. Not domains.
Website Magazine is a great free resource for domainers looking to develop their domains. But don’t turn to the publication for good advice on domain names.
In the May edition, the magazine profiles “Website Magazine’s Ranking of Domain Registrars” based on traffic to the registrars’ web sites. The problem is how the magazine defines “domain registrar”.
For example, Sedo is ranked #3.

TRAFFIC Does Disney -
Domain name conference lands at Disney World next week.
The domain industry descends on Disney World next week as the popular T.R.A.F.F.I.C. domain conference arrives May 20. This should be an exciting show, in part because many of the industry’s top companies (Moniker, Parked.com, etc) have offices in Florida. It doesn’t hurt that the show is at Disney and is hosted at the top resort in the park.
I will be at the show and on a couple panels. Additionally, ... read more ...

It’s official: domain monetization and management company acquires Name Intelligence.

Survey shows Escrow.com is leader at facilitating large domain purchases.
34% of respondents in Domain Name Wire’s third annual survey said they prefer to use Escrow.com to safely pay for high dollar domain names they buy.
Escrow.com is popular with domain owners because it was designed as a fully automated platform for escrow and has a particular focus on domain names. Pricing is also reasonable:
$0-$5,000 3.25%
$5,001-$25,000 $162.50 + 0.26% of amount over ... read more ...

Firefox Plug-In a Must Have for Domainers -
Simple add-on lets you search domain name availability of any text in browser.
Sometimes the simple tools are best. That’s the case with Richard Kershaw’s “Domain Lookup” for Firefox browsers.

A Google – Yahoo Partnership That Makes Sense -
How can Yahoo team up with Google? Think international.
News reports suggest Yahoo’s two week trial running Google ads is going very well. So well, in fact, that the companies are discussing expanding the relationship. That news should scare anyone in the domain name industry and any publisher that uses Google Adsense. If Yahoo exits the stage, look for payout percentages to decrease.
But there is one partnership deal Yahoo (YHOO) and Google (GOOG) could strike ... read more ...

Survey: Sedo Top Domain Name Parking Service -
For the second year in a row, Sedo tops the Domain Name Wire survey.
Sedo is the top choice for parking domain names, according to a survey of 841 domain name industry participants. 48% of those surveyed picked Sedo as the best domain name parking program. Last year Sedo was the winner as well but only garnered 32% of the vote. In the 2006 survey Sedo only pulled in 19%.
With domain parking in upheavel, Sedo has escaped relatively unscathed. Sedo provides ads ... read more ...

Should Companies Let Affiliates Use Trademarks in Domain Names? -
Companies need to be careful when allowing affiliates to use their trademark in domain names.
I do a lot of “affiliate arbitrage” by promoting affiliate programs through paid search platforms such as Google Adwords. This used to be really easy. But then Google decided to limit identical “display URL” for each search term to one. So if you were promoting Orbitz.com then you had to use a different domain name to direct traffic to the landing page. If you ... read more ...

Is Direct Navigation Too Expensive? -
High domain prices might make purchases for direct navigation too costly.
At an entrepreneurs’ retreat in Mexico earlier this year, I stumped about domain names and how entrepreneurs can use them to their advantage. One of the topics was using generic domains for “direct navigation”. For example, an entrepreneur who sells sports equipment might use BaseballBats.com to direct targeted traffic to his site.
One of the entrepreneurs in the room was a successful ... read more ...
Yahoo May Outsource Pay-Per-Click to Google -
If expanded, deal would hurt domainers.
Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) has started a test with Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) to determine if it can make more money using Google’s ad feed than its own, reports Wall Street Journal.
The deal involves 3% of search queries on Yahoo’s site, which will show Google Adsense for Search ads instead of Yahoo’s own search ads. Yahoo is trying to show that it has greater revenue potential that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) gives it. Essentially, ... read more ...
