See GoDaddy’s crafty .NYC boat ad -
Barge message taunts neighbors across the Hudson.
Earlier today I wrote about the highly anticipated launch of .NYC domain names. GoDaddy is promoting the domain name heavily around New York City, including a big ad on a barge being piloted on the Hudson River.
Here are a couple photos of the barge, taunting New Jersey residents about how New York City has a domain name and they don’t.
In fact, only people who live or own a business in New York City are eligible ... read more ...

Moniker only reset your password, and we need to do something about it NOW -
Moniker tries to improve security, but…
Moniker just sent an email to all of its customers notifying them that their passwords were reset in the name of better security.
Requiring stronger passwords at Moniker is a good idea. It has historically had weak password requirements, including password character composition and reset requirements.
Yet the way Moniker made the change was probably counterproductive to security.
The email to each customer included the login ... read more ...

Should new TLD registries sell directly to consumers? -
New TLD registries might need to go direct to consumers in addition to the existing registrar channel.
Can I interest you in a domain today, ma’am?There has been an established channel for gTLD domain name registrations for a long time.
The registries offer domains to registrars, who in turn sell them to people like you and me.
This channel has been mandated in top level domain contracts with ICANN because of the way these contracts were handed out. Verisign’s ... read more ...

Google Entering a Domain Business May Have Less of an Impact on Web.com -
Summary
Web.com’s stock has declined 36.4% year to date. The decline is being driven by lower revenue guidance and Google announcing their entrance into the domain industry.
Google will have an impact on the domain industry but the impact won’t be as significant as investors are anticipating. Additionally, Web.com may actually benefit from Google’s presents.
Even if Google doesn’t help Web.com, Web.com has been able to perform well in a very competitive market environment.

My .website results: Hexonet wins a day -
Hexonet did remarkably well with my .website pre-orders.
On Wednesday, I wrote about the challenges I had pre-registering domain names at various registrars.
I was specifically trying to pre-register .website domains. .Website was supposed to launch Wednesday, but was delayed a day for technical reasons. This gave me another 24 hours to go after the domains I wanted.

Hey domain registrars, get your sh*t together! -
Pre-ordering new TLDs is (still) a complete mess.
This morning I tried to give my money to a handful of domain name registrars. I tried really hard.
Some of them refused to take it unless I jumped through a bunch of hoops. Mind-numbing, hair-pulling hoops. Someone pass the Propecia, because I’m going to need some to replace all the hair I just pulled out.
The simple exercise I was trying to complete: pre-registering .website domain names.
Let me tell you, it’s ... read more ...

There are two great bang on medical domain names in closed auctions at Snapnames.com, Gynecologist.com Obstetrician.com
More about the auctions in a few, but the history of the domain names may indicate that Moniker has gone the way of Tucows and is picking up expired domains for its own account and then selling them instead of letting the simply drop.

An instance of new TLD channel selling pleasantness of Minds + Machines -
Getting registrars excited about promoting new TLDs is key to each registry’s success.
I’ve written numerous times about what new TLD companies are doing to promote their domain names to end users.
Just as important is marketing them to domain name registrars, which typically act as the channel to get domain names into the hands of end users. This is especially important given the flood of new domain names hitting the market every week.
Here’s an example of ... read more ...

Domain name registration and a Paradox of Choice -
Offering too many choices might lead to more abandoned shopping carts.
One of my favorite books is Barry Schwartz’s The Paradox of Choice.
The premise of the book is that more choice doesn’t necessarily mean more satisfaction. It can lead to regret, dissatisfaction, and indecision.
The book references a report by Columbia and Stanford researchers called “When Choice is Demotivating” (pdf).
One of the field experiments in the report involved a sample station ... read more ...

Domain name hunt is most softened (at some registrars) -
A look at how major domain registrars are handling domain search in the wake of new TLDs.
I’ve written a couple times about the state of registrar search as registrars grapple with an onslaught of new TLDs, most recently at the end of February.
There’s good news for TLD registries: search is getting a lot better.
Let’s run through the registrars I checked last time for an update.

Are industry-specific resellers a destiny of domain name registration? -
Niche resellers and registrars are key for selling industry-specific domain names.
Many of the new top level domain names coming to market are targeted to particular industries: .photography for photographers, .plumbing for plumbers, .solar for the solar industry.
Selling these domain names through mass market domain name registrars is tricky. The domain names are unlikely to come up high in search results unless a particular keyword closely matches the TLD. Unless ... read more ...

A demeanour inside Google’s new domain name registrar -
Google Domains offers a simple way for businesses to establish a web presence, but not much more.
It’s been a little over a month since Google announced its domain name registration service, and I got access to the beta today.
