Water School, a non-profit that helps bring clean water to those in developing countries, will host its second WaterNight during TRAFFIC in Las Vegas this month. The group hosted the first WaterNight during WebFest in Santa Monica in February. It was more crowded than the conference itself and it helped raise $40,000 for Water School. Water School executive director Richard Lau had his head shaved ... read more ...

Thoughts About TRAFFIC Vancouver - A mostmortem on last week’s TRAFFIC conference. I enjoyed last week in the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes it’s hard to provide updates on the blog during a conference because you’re too busy meeting with people. That was the case last week. So here’s a recap of some of my thoughts from last week: Attendance - About 150 people showed up for the event. Many more had registered but were unable to make it at the last minute, so I figure about 175 registered. ... read more ...

Two Domain Auctions End Today, KZ.com Snags 6 Figure Bid - Extended online domain name auctions from TRAFFIC and DOMAINfest end today. First, the extended auction from TRAFFIC concludes on Proxibid at 1 PM EST. With less than 3 hours to go, a few domains have bids but haven’t met their reserves. This may indicate there are some buying opportunities ... read more ...

The agenda for next week’s Targeted T.R.A.F.F.I.C. domain name conference has been updated and now includes a keynote: Joseph McClendon III. Heading to TRAFFIC or DOMAINfest? Better Get Your Hotel Now. - Hotel rooms are booking quickly for January domain name conferences. It’s hard to believe that the 2010 domain conference schedule kicks off in about seven weeks. As it creeps up on us, be sure to make your hotel reservations now. Rooms for the TRAFFIC show at the Hard Rock hotel in Las Vegas are cheap — only $159 a night — thanks to the global recession. That doesn’t include taxes and resort fees. You can book your room online using the link on TRAFFIC’s ... read more ...

Can Rick Latona Save TRAFFIC Conference? - Latona will add needed spark to domain conference franchise. TRAFFIC was the first big domain name industry conference. It was also the first to do many innovative things, such as offer a compelling live domain auction. But lately its star has faded. Attendance is down, and don’t just blame the economy. When I asked people before the last TRAFFIC if they were going, a common response was “It’s not relevant anymore”. They blamed lackluster programming ... read more ...

Handicapping Today’s Moniker Live Domain Auction - Many high quality domain names in today’s auction. Today’s live domain name auction by Moniker at the TRAFFIC conference is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. local time (6 p.m. EDT). Moniker did a good job getting some high quality domain names at low reserves. Will it be enough? Attendance at this show is down considerably from past TRAFFIC shows. Word is that about 250 people registered for the show but fewer may actually be there. Thankfully, bidders can ... read more ...

Moniker’s Live Domain Auction Looks Like a Winner - Moniker meets the challenge with superb list of domain names. My general response to a list of domain names published for a live domain auction is usually subdued. Rarely do I see domain names that are priced to sell. But after taking plenty of flack for its last auction, Moniker seems to have stepped up to the plate for this month’s TRAFFIC auction. (See a full list of domains in the auction here.) In the under $5,000 category, there are a number of good domains ... read more ...

TRAFFIC Down Under Now Cheaper - Falling Australian dollar makes accommodations (and beer) cheaper. Yesterday I wrote about how the rising U.S. dollar is creating winners and losers in the domain name world. Today I received an email from TRAFFIC Down Under, the domain conference taking place in Australia next month, illustrating how the falling Australian Dollar makes the trip a lot more affordable for people traveling from the United States: Currently, with the weak Australian dollar, it is very ... read more ...

Sedo’s Domain Sales Pipeline is Growing - After dismal week for domain name sales, aftermarket is filling up pipeline. Last week was a dismal one for completed domain sales, although the pipeline is full thanks to the TRAFFIC auction. Sales are also looking up over at Sedo. Just a few minutes ago SeedsDirect.com sold for $20,000. The domain gets about 500 visits a month. There are bigger sales on the horizon. All-In.com is active at $40,000 and will close on October 14. People Are Still Buying Domain Names - Despite economic turmoil, I had one of my biggest sales months ever. Domain parking revenue is down. The world economy is on the brink. The Dow dropped another 350 points today. Yet for some reason, I had one of my top three months ever for domain sales in September. Those include sales at the Aftermarket.com auction and sales to someone trying to diversify his investment portfolio into domain names. The TRAFFIC auctions were fairly successful, too. Earlier today ... read more ...

How Monte Cahn & Crew Pulled It Off - $3 million auction was well executed. If anyone was scared about how yesterday’s live domain auction at TRAFFIC would go, their fears dissipated about 30 minutes into the auction. Domains were selling and bidding was intense. Sure, the final tally of $3 million ($4 million for all auctions this week) was much less than the $10 million last year, but it’s a coup given what’s going on in the economy. So how did Monte Cahn and his crew at Moniker pull it off? 1. ... read more ...

Stars May Align for Moniker Domain Name Auction during 3PM Today - Outlook getting rosier by the minute for Moniker Auction. [Update: FinancialAid.com sells for $800,000.] Earlier today I wrote about how financial uncertainty is peaking and this has weighed down on the live domain name auctions this week. I also said that Moniker’s timeslot — 3 PM EDT today — may end up being a very lucky happenstance. It’s looking more that way. Democrats and Republicans have apparently come up with a bailout plan and the stock market ... read more ...

Domain Auctions aren’t for End Users. Get Over It. - Domain name auctions have never been, and will never be, for end users. I’ve read a lot of complaints over the past week about how late the domain auction houses have released their auction lists for this week’s TRAFFIC show in NYC. That’s a fair complaint. Domain lists should be released weeks, not days, before an auction. But the main complaint I hear is that by releasing the lists so late, it makes it impossible to market the domains to end users. This ... read more ...

TRAFFIC Comes to New York in Perilous Times - TRAFFIC hits New York next week during a rough time for the city. New York City is the center of the financial universe, and life isn’t grand right now. This September has been very rough for the financial markets and firms headquartered just across the Brooklyn Bridge from the Marriott where TRAFFIC will take place. What will the mood be at the show? The domain market isn’t as hot as last time the show rolled into New York, but will the stock market crash and ... read more ...

dotMobi to Enforce Compliance Rules for Premium Domains (Eventually) - dotMobi says it will start to enforce guidelines for domains won at auction. In June I wrote a second article about premium dotMobi domain names that were won at auctions at Sedo. At the time, not a single domain won at the first Sedo auction was in compliance. Compliance basically requires a dotMobi compatible parking page followed by a mobile web site within 6 months. Although it’s not surprising that few of the domains had real web sites within 6 months, ... read more ...
