FlatRate.de Sells for $200,000 -
German ccTLD tops sales list for the week.
Yesterday on Twitter Sedo posted some of its completed sales for the week. One in particular caught my eye: FlatRate.de sold for EUR 160,000. That’s about $200,000 USD. The buyer is Active Touch Media + Marketing of Germany.
Although that was the only completed six figure sale from Sedo last week, the company tallied an impressive line up of five figure sales across TLDs:

Sedo Acquires RevenueDirect and Why It Makes Sense -
Sedo has acquired RevenueDirect, Dotster’s domain name parking service.
Sedo has acquired domain name parking company RevenueDirect.
For established domain parking companies, acquiring another domain parking company usually doesn’t make sense. Parking companies rarely have long term contracts with customers, so the acquirer risks seeing acquired customers leaving the ship after a takeover. But this acquisition makes sense for a couple reasons:

dotMobi Steps Up Enforcement for Non-Compliant Domain Names -
Registry to take additional measures against buyers who haven’t developed domain names.
It’s taken a long time, but buyers of premium .mobi domain names appear to finally be developing their domain names. dotMobi says it will take additional measures against those who have not taken this step as required in their purchase agreement.
I’ve written several times about lack of enforcement of dotMobi’s premium domain buyer rules, but the registry finally started ... read more ...
Q&A With Sam Nunez about Sedo and RevenueDirect -
Sam Nunez explains the RevenueDirect acquisition and the potential for future acquisitions.
Sam Nunez, VP of Product Management for Sedo, answers some questions about the companies acquisition of RevenueDirect.
Domain Name Wire: When did Sedo first enter into discussions with RevenueDirect/Dotster about acquiring the parking company?
Nunez: The successful round of negotiations started last December. We had some on-off discussions with Dotster for more than a year ... read more ...

Is It Time to Suspend a Live Domain Name Auction? -
Results from DOMAINfest beg the question.
The advent of the live domain name auction has given the domain name industry a huge boost in both high dollar investor purchases and media attention. Two years ago in New York, Moniker’s live domain name auction topped $10 million in sales.
Last month in Los Angeles, the live domain auction brought in only $800,000 over two nights selling 110 domain names. It wasn’t a big surprise given the economy and what’s going ... read more ...

Median Domain Name Sales Price Down 15% -
Median price drop not as severe as average.
Last week I wrote about Sedo’s 2008 Market Study, which showed a 21% drop in the average sales price of domain names to $2,098. I explained that the “average” number doesn’t matter, and that we should really pay attention to the median. The median is the midpoint. If you ordered all 36,884 domain names from lowest price to highest, the median would be right in the middle (technically, the average of the 18,442th ... read more ...
Low Quality 3 Letter Domain Names Hit Hard Times -
Recent sales at Sedo show scarcity is less important than potential use.
Domain names aren’t like baseball cards. Just because something is scarce doesn’t mean it’s more valuable.
This week’s completed sales of three letter domain names at Sedo show weakness in low quality three letter domain names:
MWX.com $4,000
FGZ.com $4,000
VZJ.com $3,499
JQF.com $3,333
This parallels a fad in the domain market during 2008. Because all four character .com domain names ... read more ...
22.com Sells for $100,000 -
Domain auction ends with over 50 bids.
A dozen bidders placed over 50 bids in an auction at Sedo for 22.com. The end result was a sale for $100,000. Bidding rocketed up to $99,000 with two days to go, and then stalled until the final bid was place today. In order to bid over $100,000, buyers most obtain Premium Plus Certification.
The seller is Virtual Network SA of Switzerland. Hopefully we’ll know the identity of the buyer in a couple weeks.

Dollars.com Sells for $388,000 -
Domain name with a history sells for lots of “dollars”.
Sedo has sold Dollars.com for EUR 302,500, which is about $388,000 USD at today’s exchange rates. An auction for the domain ended this morning, but the winning bidder is certified and is likely to complete the transaction. My understanding is the deal was put together by a Sedo broker.
Dollars.com has somewhat of a history on the domain name aftermarket. The domain reportedly sold for $650,000 in 2007. ... read more ...
Sedo Releases 2008 Domain Name Market Study -
Sales volume up, average price down in 2008.
Sedo has released its 2008 Secondary Domain Market Study (pdf), and it provides a wealth of information about the domain name aftermarket.
The domain brokerage company sold over $77 million in domains in 2008, a slight increase of 8% over 2007.
Although overall sales revenue was up, the company saw weakness in the fourth quarter. The company sold 9,727 domain names in Q2 (the peak for the year) and only 8,754 in Q4. ... read more ...
PushToAuction.com Sells over $125,000 in Domain Names -
Unique idea drives hundreds of domain aftermarket sales.
It’s been about six months since I first wrote about PushToAuction.com, a service that lists domain names that people are willing to send to an auction on Sedo with a $60 offer.
The service was active for a couple months before Domain Name Wire’s story, and since launch it has helped sell 426 domain names for $126,901. That’s an average of $298.
The value to sellers is clear: list domain names on the ... read more ...

Fly.com Appreciates 20% in 10 Years -
Sale of $1.8 million not that great of a return.
The big domain name news today is the sale of Fly.com for $1.8 million to Travelzoo (NASDAQ: TZOO). That’s a big number, especially in today’s economy. But it’s not a great return for the seller.
It was almost 10 years ago that the domain name reportedly changed hands for $1.5 million. So in about 10 years the domain name appreciated less than 2% per year. Of course, 10 years ago the dot.com bubble was at ... read more ...

Domain has met reserve and will sell for six figures.
The domain name Top.com has met its reserve at Sedo and is currently at EUR 101,000 ($133,000 USD). 38 bids have been placed. The auction ends January 29 at 7 am EST.
The auction should give a confidence boost to the domain industry heading into this week’s DOMAINfest live domain auctions.

Sedo Great Domains Domain Auction Ends Today -
With just hours remaining, several good domain names have met their reserves.
Sedo’s January Great Domains auction concludes at noon EST today. With just hours to go, several high quality domains have met their reserve prices and should go much higher in the final hours.
I’m surprised to see that Fired.com had such a low reserve. The domain has met the reserve and is at $10,100. The owner had been asking much more, but there’s still time for the domain to ... read more ...
FindaDate.com Finds a Buyer during $31,000 -
Web site tops Great Domains auction.
The web site FindaDate.com has sold for $31,000 in Sedo’s Great Domains domain name auction that ended earlier today. Here are other tentative sales results that I was able to collect:
Starship.com – $22,500 – this seems like a lot of money for this domain. But it does have a Compete.com rank inside 500,000 as a parked domain. It currently shows ads for Star Wars items, but earlier this decade it was used by an education ... read more ...

360.org domain was purchased for only $2,000 a year ago.
Sedo has completed the sale of 360.org for $25,500. The seller is likely to be familiar to people on DNForum, as active member “Acro” (Theo Develegas) flipped this domain for about a dozen times what he paid for it.
On his blog Acro.net, he details the negotiation process and how he’s thankful he didn’t sell the domain earlier. He listed the domain with a $6,000 reserve at a TRAFFIC auction, but the ... read more ...

Sedo Great Domains Auction Looks Promising -
January’s Great Domains auction hopes to match last month’s total.
After selling over $500,000 last month, January’s Sedo Great Domains auction kicked off earlier today and runs through January 22. Already two low priced but notable domains have met their reserves: Forgive.com at $4,999 and gaps.com at $2,350 (the latter started with no reserve).
There are two two character .com domains in the auction with reserves between $50,000 and $100,000. One is PZ.com, ... read more ...
The Google Squeeze: How Google’s Black Box Affects Partners’ Revenue -
Google’s black box of ad pricing makes it impossible to understand if partners are getting a fair share.
When Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) offered a “direct to consumer” domain parking option last month, many cheered. “Finally, we can cut out the middleman!” they exclaimed. But others worried about potential downsides. Specifically, domain owners realized that they have little bargaining power with Google compared to parking companies that aggregate significant ... read more ...

Domain parking provider Sedo has increased its minimum requirements to apply for SedoPro, its advanced parking program. The new requirement is 1,000 domains or $300 in monthly parking revenue. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program; Sedo also considers the quality of your domains and traffic.

Sedo domain listings are now on 11… but I can’t get it to work.
Domains listed for sale on Sedo are now being offered to customers of 11 Internet, one of the largest domain registrars. Sedo and 11 are owned by the same parent company.
However, the system for buying or requesting a price on a Sedo domain doesn’t appear to work. When you attempt to register a domain, 11 will show a list of related domains that are for sale at Sedo. In this example I searched ... read more ...

The Perils of Trying to Go Public -
NameMedia’s withdrawn IPO more painful than it looks.
It may appear that NameMedia’s decision last week to to drop its planned initial public offering is just a temporary setback. Aside from the costs of filing its S-1 to go public, going on the investor roadshow, and obliging quite period regulations, did it really cost the company anything? The answer is yes. And it’s not the time, money, or decreased morale that hurts the most. It’s the disclosure.
