Sedo and Moniker auctions end today.
Sedo’s February Great Domains auction and Moniker’s TRAFFIC silent auction both end today. Will the industry be cheering at the end of the day, or will the results be a dissapointment? Pressure is on both companies to perform.

First Light Net Reels In Fishing.org -
Fishing and outdoor network understands the power of keyword domains, also finds success with .mobi.
First Light Net, A Predatorial Advertising Associates L.L.C. Company, has reeled in a big fish with its purchase of Fishing.org for $38,500. First Light Net is no stranger to the power of generic domains, as I found out in a recent e-mail interview with Michael Hodgdon. The company is also finding success on the mobile web, which should be music to .mobi owners’ ... read more ...
Moniker Auction Nets $4.4 Million, SkiResorts.com sells for $850,000 -
Moniker’s live domain auction ends with mixed results.
If tonight’s domain name auction was a barometer for the domain industry, we know nothing more than we did before the auction began. The results were, well, mediocre.
Before it began, I set a personal range for the auction. Anything less than $4 million would be a failure, anything greater than $6M would be a success. The auction ended up squarely in the middle, with $4.4 million changing hands (including ... read more ...

Geodomain and TRAFFIC auctions conclude next week; important for industry.
With all of the doom and gloom in the economy and questions surrounding the value of domain names, next week will be an important one for the domain name industry.
First, Sedo’s Geodomain auction will end on February 20. The auction has already racked up over $2 million in bids, but none of the big ticket domains have reached their reserves. Iraq.com currently has a bid of 400,000 EUR ... read more ...

MSNBC Reports on a Cruises.co.uk Purchase - Mainstream media has picked up on the sale first reported by DNJournal.com, of Cruises.co.uk by the same company that owned Cruise.co.uk.
In an article by MSNBC, they cite it as the largest sale ever of a .co.uk.
Good always to see domain sales news picked up by mainstream media outlets.
There always so surprised how much domain actually sell for.
Actually MSNBC goes as far to say the buyer paid 1.1 Million dollars for an “s”. Since he already owned the singular.
What the MSNBC guy doesn’t ... read more ...

CashView Buys Bill.com, Changes Name -
Startup harnesses the value of a high quality domain name.
I first met René Lacerte at the DEMOfall conference last September. He was officially launching his new company, CashView. The company streamlines the process of accounts payable.
“CashView” is a good, descriptive domain name for what the company does. But Lacerte decided he could do better, and recently acquired the domain Bill.com.
But the story of how Lacerte got his hands on this premium domain ... read more ...

The article by columnist Andrew Feinberg picks Communicate.com as a “smart speculation” but also uncovers more details about the growing company. The article is likely the reason Communicate.com’s stock price soared 38% last week to close at $2.70 per share. ... read more ...

February T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Auction Could Be Record-Setting -
First cut at premium domain names looks promising.
It’s been six months since Moniker and TRAFFIC teamed up to shatter a domain name auction record, selling over $10M in domains in an afternoon. Since that time no auctions have come close to this record.
After reviewing the first cut of premium domains for next month’s TRAFFIC conference in Las Vegas, it looks like this one can shatter the previous record. There’s a big caveat though: it depends on the reserves ... read more ...

For More Domain Sales, Categorize Your Domains -
Afternic claims categorized domains 2.8x more likely to sell.
If you list your domains for sale on sites such as Afternic and Sedo, you should take the extra time to properly categorize your domains. According to NameMedia, domains on Afternic that are categorized (e.g. “Education”, “Events”) are 2.8 times as likely to sell as domains that are not categorized.
This makes sense. When I search for domains to buy at Afternic, I usually browse by the categories ... read more ...

British internet media company MediaCorp has purchased Sport.co.uk for £135,000 (approximately $262,000 USD). The company plans to create a sports portal with the site.
MediaCorp sold Casino.co.uk for £3.0M in cash last year, with incentives of up to £0.625m if the domain sells well. From what I can tell, this sale has not been reported in the domain name industry and would be the highest ever reported sale ... read more ...

DomainTools Auction Sells $30,000 in Domains -
Bidders absent during online live auction.
DomainTools‘ January auction has concluded with lackluster results. Based on sales completed during the live portion of the auction, I calculate $31,800 in sales with a median price of $1,000. Domains are still available for purchase, however, and the number will increase before everything is said in done. Already a couple late bids have been received.

Most .mobi Domains Won during Sedo Auctions are Out of Compliance -
A review of auctions won at first .mobi domain auction shows most are out of compliance.
When mTLD, the registry for .mobi domains, hooked up with Sedo to auction off premium domains, they probably had no idea how successful it would be. Successful, that is, in terms of sales prices. But there’s another side of the coin, and that is compliance with mTLD’s auction rules.
Participants in the auctions are bound by several rules, including:
