The usually thing Blake Irving points during elephants is a camera - GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving is doing a Reddit AMA. GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving is doing an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit right now. It’s a pretty gutsy move given the typical Reddit user and their stance toward GoDaddy. I suppose that’s the point. Comments have been basically what you’d expect: the company’s initial support of SOPA, the founder shooting elephants and racy commercials. Most of these are easy to defend since Blake wasn’t around when these happened. ... read more ...

Pricing a latest new TLDs: NameCheap is Cheap - NameCheap’s pricing for new TLDs is low. Two months ago I ran a price comparison of new top level domain name options at various top registrars. The prices were for the three tiers of domains offered by registry Donuts. Many more domains have come out since then, often offered by registries other than Donuts. Today I ran another comparison based on four non-Donuts domains. In many ways the results were very similar to the Donuts comparison. NameCheap lives up ... read more ...

Rightside’s first two top level domain names are getting closer to market. The company, currently part of Demand Media, launched .democrat and .dance in landrush today. Although these are the first two of its own domains to enter landrush, Rightside’s registry operations are handling the backend for Donuts’ domain names. I finally purebred a new TLD. Here is a (long) story. - I registered four new TLDs today. It took two hours. Today was the day. I finally registered a domain in a new TLD. Actually it looks like I ended up with four registrations, all in .link. Here is my story. Genre: horror. When I got to the office this morning I decided I was going to do whatever it took to register a domain in .link. .Link is the first truly “generic” domain to hit the market, and at about $10/year it’s also reasonably priced. Since it’s generic, ... read more ...

Money talks, and Verisign is doing a good pursuit quashing new TLDs - Marketing programs help .com get top billing, but other registrars can play this game too. New top level domain names represent a growth opportunity for domain name registrars, many of which have seen domain registrations plateauing over the past year. That’s why 11 spent $50 million promoting new top level domain pre-registrations and other registrars have prominently featured new TLDs on their home pages. Over the past week or two I’ve noticed something interesting, ... read more ...

United Internet holding marketplace share from GoDaddy in new TLDs - After slow start, company is grabbing share in recent TLD launches. United Internet, a group of companies that includes 11, Sedo, InterNetX, and United Domains, appears to be taking a good chunk of the new TLDs market share away from GoDaddy. United spent about $50 million advertising pre-registrations for new top level domain names. Yet GoDaddy was kicking its butt in registrations for the first batches of new TLDs that hit the market. That has shifted in recent ... read more ...

Registrar suspends all domain names eliminated from consummated registrar - EnCirca finds that domains were used for nefarious purposes. ICANN terminated the accreditation of domain name registrar ABSYSTEMS INC (dba yournamemonkey.com) in December for multiple contract breaches. ICANN transferred the domain names to another registrar as ICANN does in cases of a de-accreditation. In this case, EnCirca was the (not so) lucky registrar. EnCirca got more than it bargained for. ICANN informed EnCirca that ABSYSTEMS had approximately 700-800 names, ... read more ...

The Birth Pangs of new tip turn domain names - The launch of new domain names has been anything but smooth. Confusion. Frustration. Incompetence. That’s how I’d sum up the launch of new TLDs so far. I’ve already written about some of the challenges of new TLD launches to date. How they’re coming out with a whimper. How domain name registrars are making it difficult to register these new domain names. Kevin Murphy over at Domain Incite has more examples today in a post titled “Registrars screwing up new ... read more ...

Grumpy a Cat and Rob Corddry give Name.com a High Five - Celebrities give Name.com a high five. Name.com did a rather clever marketing gimmick during SXSW Interactive in Austin. It sent one of its customer service reps to the city as “High Five Guy”. For every high five he got (10,000) the company donated 5 cents to an Austin charity. It’s difficult to attract attention during the noise of SXSW, but High Five Guy appears to have done the trick. The charity element certainly didn’t hurt. High Five guy got high fives ... read more ...

Why we haven’t purebred any new TLDs yet - Between reserved domains, name collisions, premium pricing and awkward domain name registrar interfaces, it’s just a pain in the ass. Earlier this week I wrote about my experience trying to register 17 domain ... read more ...

Domain hunt progressing, though still not prepared for new tip turn domain names - Registrars are slowly improving their search results to show new top level domain name options, but the experience is far from ideal. Earlier this month I wrote about how domain name search at major registrars wasn’t ready for new top level domain names.
