Rightside only expelled the initial gain report - Revenue and earnings slip year-over-year, but that was expected. Rightside today released its first quarterly earnings report after being spun off from Demand Media. The company, which started trading as NAME on the NASDAQ this Monday, posted total revenue of $46.7 million and a net loss of ($3.5) million. Both revenue and earnings were lower than what the group grossed in the second quarter of 2013, due to a sharp drop in its “Aftermarket” revenue. Aftermarket ... read more ...

My takeaways from Rightside’s initial financier call - Naidu makes his pitch to analysts; company discloses some numbers on parking and domain sales. Rightside just concluded its first ever investor conference call as a standalone company. CEO Taryn Naidu and CFO Tracy Knox spent much of the time explaining Rightside’s market position to help frame the conversation with analysts. That market position is largely betting on the success of new top level domain names. The company explained how its margins as a registry ... read more ...

Use HTTPS? Google will give we a strike in hunt rankings. - Search ranking change should be good news for domain name registrars. Google announced this morning that it’s starting to give extra credit in search results to companies offering websites secured by SSL. That means sites where you see httpS:// might show up higher in search results than those without added encryption. Google explains the added ranking factor in a post on its blog: …over the past few months we’ve been running tests taking into account whether ... read more ...

Rightside starts trade currently as NAME on a NASDAQ - A big day for Rightside (and the domain name industry). Today is a big day for domain name company Rightside as it begins to trade on the NASDAQ. Shares are down slightly right now to $15.65. Rightside has been spun off from Demand Media. Owners of Demand Media shares will get one Rightside share for every five Demand Media shares. (Demand is doing its own 5/1 reverse stock split, hence the Rightside allocation.) Shares in Rightside will trade under the ticker NAME. While ... read more ...

Finally, well-targeted new tip turn domain name marketing - Network Solutions’ pitches .republican domain names to owners of political domain names. A couple weeks ago I wrote about how Sedo did a new TLD promotion that registrars should be doing. Sedo looked at its existing customer base for people interested in buying and selling domain names with “club” in them and marketed .club to them. I finally have an example of a domain name registrar doing a similar thing: This goes a step further. Rather than just look for ... read more ...

An refurbish on Moniker - I’ve transferred many of my domain names out. I’m working on the rest. It’s been 7 weeks since domain name registrar Moniker switched to a new platform. 7 weeks since Moniker broke. The company has fixed a lot of the problems, even if confirmation messages were clearly written by a coder. But as I’ve written before, I’ve lost confidence in the registrar. I’m transferring my domain names out. I just completed my second batch of domain names and have now ... read more ...

Minds + Machines nixes Priority Reservation System after registrars complain - Registrars complained to ICANN’s compliance department about program. Minds + Machines has nixed its Priority Reservation System for new top level domain names after registrars questioned aspects of the program. The program allowed customers to reserve domain names ahead of launch. Unlike typical pre-registrations, customers were guaranteed they’d get the domain name after sunrise since it was a program run by the registry, not registrars. Moniker enables bulk send auth codes - Moniker makes it easier to transfer domain names to another registrar. It’s been a frustrating six weeks for Moniker customers. After a disastrous switch to a completely new registrar platform, many customers wanted to move their domain names to another registrar. Adding insult to injury, there was no way to get transfer authorization codes in bulk. Instead, customers had to request them one-by-one. Finally, some good news for customers: Moniker has added bulk ... read more ...

Sedo does a graduation that domain registrars should do - Domain name registrars would see good results from a marketing push similar to this. Sedo just sent out a marketing pitch to people that have listed domains for sale with “club” in them in the past. The subject line was “Did you try selling [something]club.com? Invest in THESE names now”, with a pitch for investing in .club domains. You can see the marketing email below. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen more of this from domain name registrars. Registrars ... read more ...

Registrar’s .Co.com promo misses a point - Promotion misses the point of getting the .com I’ve always wanted. The .co.com third level domain name launched in general availability this week. The company is using the tagline “Get the .com You’ve Always Wanted”, pitching you on getting a .co.com domain because the .com domain you want is already taken. Conceptually this makes sense. Yet a promotion I received from a registrar yesterday doesn’t seem to exactly capture the spirit of this. “Second chance ... read more ...

GoDaddy wants to obvious approach of onboarding new TLDs - GoDaddy files four patents related to adding new TLD options to a registrar. GoDaddy has filed four patent applications describing methods for adding new top level domain names to a registrar’s offerings. Each top level domain name a registrar offers comes with its own restrictions, GoDaddy explains: A large part of the difficulty in adding new TLDs is that each TLD may (and usually does) have unique business requirements. Why Google is apropos a domain name registrar & what it means for a business - Google is becoming a public domain name registrar. Here’s why. A few months ago a prominent figure in the domain name industry told me a prediction: in a short time, GoDaddy will no longer be the top domain name registrar. It will be Google. That was quite a bold prediction given that, at the time, Google didn’t even offer domain name registrations to the public. It only referred people to other registrars. Yesterday Google announced that it’s moving into the ... read more ...

TechCrunch Covers The New Google Domains Registrar & Google Talks About New gTLD’s - TechCrunch.com just covered the new Google Domains name registrar.
