Pssst…Rightside expelled the name collision domain names - Many good domains on the list, but be prepared to pay a premium. While you were partying in Las Vegas at NamesCon last week, Rightside released its name collision domain names to the public. Sort of… As a bit of background, name collision domain names are ones that new top level domain operators had to hold back from registration at launch. The list includes domain names that, during a somewhat random window of time in history, received traffic. ICANN required the domain names to be held back for ... read more ...

This week in new TLDs: Belgium geos, .RIP and a singular landrush - A couple geo domain names are among this week’s new TLD launches. I usually don’t write about landrush phases, but .Space has a landrush this week that is rather unique. It starts today, lasts just one week, and most registrars have it priced at or near the cost of the domain name when it hits general availability. 101Domain, for example, is charging only $10.99 for a .space domain in landrush, the same price as it will ask next week when it hits general availability. ... read more ...

More new TLD complexity: transferring reward domain names - Article points to further complexities with new top level domain names. With new top level domain names now entering their renewal cycle, you might be tempted to transfer domain names from one registrar to another. This could prove challenging if the domain name you bought is a “premium” domain name in which the registry charges higher than standard pricing. That’s what Kevin Lisota found out while testing out Google Domains: Google Domains does sell .tips domains, ... read more ...

ROTD auction during NamesCon will sell a lot of domain names - Sell-through rate at next week’s auction is guaranteed to be high. Right of the Dot (ROTD) is hosting a live domain name auction next Tuesday during NamesCon. From the looks of it, they’re going to sell a lot of domain names. The only question is how much they’ll sell for. Already 31 domain names have pre-bids that have met their reserves (mostly on no reserve domain names). That means the auction is already at about a 30% sell-through rate on a planned inventory ... read more ...

Existing TLD .Reise headed to a auction block - Top level domain name will be auctioned at the end of February. Innovative Auctions Ltd., the same company handling many private new top level domain name contention set auctions, is holding an auction for .REISE on February 27. What’s unique here is that .reise is an existing top level domain name that’s now available for purchase. I believe this is the second time Innovative Auctions has held auctions for already-released TLDs. Reise roughly translates to “journey” ... read more ...

Interesting motive for a city changing the domain name - City cites credibility for switching from .org to .gov. The Town of West Hartford recently changed its domain name from a .org to a .gov, and I found its rationale for doing so rather interesting. Here’s a news brief from West Hartford News: This month, the Town of West Hartford changed its domain name from westhartford.org to westhartfordct.gov. The .gov domain offers a higher level of scrutiny that only federal, state and local governments are allowed to use. ... read more ...

74% of new TLD registrations (SLD+TLD) not purebred in .com - Sounds like a fun experiment, however try to remember the IP location is only one of many factors that Google uses to produce any given results page. To truly see this for yourself, and see what Google displays for a “stranger”, you would also need to factor in the following: 1. WHO is searching. They can derive this from any active Gmail sessions you may have opened, or if you use Chrome, they know who you are, and what searches you’ve made from that login, even if you clear ... read more ...

Two new top level domain names launch this week, both on Christmas Eve and both from Rightside. .Dentist and .Rehab exit the Early Access Program on Wednesday and revert to regular pricing. The .dentist domains appear to be priced a little bit higher than most Rightside domains. GoDaddy is quoting a regular price of $49.99 and a sale price of $34.99. 101Domain quotes a $37.99 price. Will some-more contested TLDs get some-more registrations? - Probably, but quantifying it is difficult at this point. I commonly hear that the best is yet to come in terms of new to level domain name launches. The most heavily contested applications are just getting resolved, and these represent the best top level domain names. It makes sense to me. But will this reflect reality? Are the TLDs we’re seeing so far not representative of the results of future, heavily contested TLD launches? I tried to dig into the data a bit ... read more ...

Could new TLDs have an SEO advantage in a future? - Only if it improves search results. Using a new top level domain name instead of a .com or other gTLD does not give you a benefit in Google search results. Ditto for using a .com instead of a new TLD. They’re basically the same. That’s what Google says. And it makes sense when you think about it. A lot of people that think new TLDs have an SEO advantage are thinking with their heart, not with their head. Logic dictates that Google would give a boost of some sorts ... read more ...

Lies, darned lies and new TLD statistics - Dig into statistics to understand how valuable they are. New top level domain name options have been out for less than a year, and everyone is clambering for data to make sense of the rollout. That includes me. I look at registration data from a number of sources, weekly sales information, usage data…basically, anything I can get my hands on. Yet it’s important to understand that data can be misleading, especially if you don’t dig into the details. A prime example ... read more ...

New TLDs give no SEO advantage and .Geo domains don’t work how we competence think - Google reiterates its guidance on TLDs and search results, and also says it isn’t geotargeted .geo domains on their own. A month or two ago a couple reports came out suggesting that new top level domain names give some sort of inherent search engine advantage. I’ve gotten into the nasty habit (sarcasm) of actually reading beyond the headline of reports and studies, and I was unimpressed with the data (if you can call it that) in these reports. Matt Cutts previously ... read more ...

Some people are successfully flipping new TLD registrations - Here are some cases where new TLD registrants flipped new domains for a nice return. Some people are striking oil with new TLDs.It’s easy to come out and say new TLDs are a waste of time for domain name investors and that you won’t make any money with them. You can point to high initial prices and registry premiums to suggest that domainers are being cut out of the action. The reality is that some people are making good money flipping new TLDs. Name Collision domain names – is there event for domainers? - The release of blocked second level strings is good for the domain name industry. Is there opportunity for domainers to profit from it? What we consider about Donuts’ confidant 80% renovation forecast - Last Friday, Donuts CEO Paul Stahura posted on CircleID an argument for strong renewal rates in new top level domain names. He even put a number on it: “…we conservatively predict an initial renewal rate of greater than 80% for Donuts gTLDs.” First of all, kuddos to Donuts for sticking its neck out there with a prediction.
