Blackberry files obvious app for predictive & energetic tip turn domain key - Idea is to change from .com to another TLD depending on what you type. Phone maker Blackberry has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a predictive and dynamic top level domain name key. We’ve all used the .com key found on many Android devices and previously on Apple phones and tablets. Recent Apple changes now make you press and hold the “.” key to enter .com or select from a list of other extensions. Blackberry’s idea ... read more ...

.Build starts building: 1,700 domains so far - .Build domain name lays the foundation. .Build domain names for the construction and building industries hit general availability on Tuesday. Tim Switzer, head of operations and registrar relations for .BUILD, told Domain Name Wire that the company has about 1,700 registrations including sunrise, landrush, and general availability. New TLD auction prices attack highs: Minds + Machines, Uniregistry, Donuts all win some domains - Average purchase prices may be north of $3 million. By all accounts, registries paid much more to settle contention sets during last week’s private auctions than in previous ones. Minds + Machines won auctions for .garden and .yoga. It spent a net $5.97 million for the two domains once the proceeds of losing the .deals and .property private auctions and withdrawing the applications are taken into account. That means it paid much more than $6 million to win auctions ... read more ...

Donuts’ Claims Plus use starts today - Trademark Claims end, Claims Plus begins. One of the Rights Protections measures in place for new top level domain names is the Trademark Claims service. For 90 days after a new TLD enters general availability, registrars must show a notice if a second level domain name registration matches a mark in the Trademark Clearinghouse. Donuts’ first batch of seven domain names (.ventures, .singles, .bike, .holdings, .plumbing, .guru, .clothing) concluded the 90 day period ... read more ...

3 new domain registries ask ICANN for dual impression domain names - .Wiki, .globo, and .ceo registries want to offer two character domain names. Three new top level domain name registries have asked ICANN to allow them to register two character domain names under their TLDs. New TLD registries aren’t allowed to offer two character second level domain names per their agreements with ICANN, but I expect this to change in coming years. The requests are very different. 1. .Wiki applicant Top Level Design has asked for two character ... read more ...

10 some-more new TLDs strike a marketplace this week. 1 will be a large flop. - Nine more new top level domain names enter general availability this week, including one that is going to have a miserable launch. The week is already off with a bang thanks to the two most successful first day new TLD launches so far. TLD Registry released Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) this morning. Tomorrow .build launches with a suggested retail price of $99. On Wednesday five of Donuts’ domain names go into regularly-priced ... read more ...

.Club and dual Chinese new tip turn domains have about $500k in reward sales - A few top level domain names have sold an impression amount of premium domains prior to general availability. Here are three new top level domain names to keep an eye on: .Club, .在线 and .中文网. .Club Domains is an “all-in” registry, meaning it has only one new TLD to offer. The company raised $7 million and spent a decent amount in a contention set auction for the domain. Still, it has millions of dollars to spend on marketing. For example, it has paid ... read more ...

.City row set resolved during a high price - Many new TLD contention auctions were held this week. There were a number of new top level domain name contention set auctions this week, although details on winners are scant thus far. .Garden, .property, and .yoga were set for auction on Tuesday. I haven’t been able to figure out the winners yet, although I’m sure publicly traded Minds + Machines (a participant in all three) will issue a press release as soon as everything is settled. I’ve learned that Donuts ... read more ...

Pricing a latest new TLDs: NameCheap is Cheap - NameCheap’s pricing for new TLDs is low. Two months ago I ran a price comparison of new top level domain name options at various top registrars. The prices were for the three tiers of domains offered by registry Donuts. Many more domains have come out since then, often offered by registries other than Donuts. Today I ran another comparison based on four non-Donuts domains. In many ways the results were very similar to the Donuts comparison. NameCheap lives up ... read more ...

Dot London and Dot NYC holding dual opposite approaches - Dot NYC much more restricted than Dot London. Two .city domain names are getting ready to enter their first phase of rollout: .London and .NYC. This will be a big moment in the new top level domain name program. Many people, including myself, think .city domain names have the biggest chance for success. Despite being much smaller than London and New York City, .berlin has already captured close to 50,000 registrations (although many of those were given away for free). Dot ... read more ...

Afilias’ new tip turn domain names have really delayed initial day - Color me surprised. Afilias launched its first six new top level domain names yesterday, and I’d rate it as the worst first day performance of any portfolio applicant. I’m basing this on changes to the zone files. Here are the six domains Afilias’ launched in general availability yesterday with how many domains they added to the zone and the current total: .red 289 to 341 .blue 205 to 270 .移动 142 to 231 (Chinese simplified for Mobile Phone) .pink 156 to ... read more ...

.Marketing and .Holiday any collect adult 2,000+ domains on initial day - First day .Marketing numbers seem rather low. Donuts launched .marketing and .holiday into general availability yesterday (post the Early Access phase), with both picking up over 2,000 registrations in the first partial day. .Marketing picked up 2,564 domains to hit 2,970 and .holiday added 2,125 to reach 2,341. These numbers are from the zone files, and the actual registrations are probably slightly more than this. I was expecting more from .marketing. Lots of existing ... read more ...

Rightside’s initial dual domain names enter landrush - After supporting dozens of Donuts’ launches, Rightside is finally ready to play its own hand. Rightside’s first two top level domain names are getting closer to market. The company, currently part of Demand Media, launched .democrat and .dance in landrush today. Although these are the first two of its own domains to enter landrush, Rightside’s registry operations are handling the backend for Donuts’ domain names. Rightside is running a fairly traditional ... read more ...

A new TLD only canceled the landrush citing “little engagement” - .Best says registrars suggested little benefit to holding a landrush. The applicant for the .best top level domain name has canceled the landrush phase of its new top level domain name launch. The company says that “registrars have given us feedback that there has been very little engagement with the TLD Landrush Phase”. Indeed, with the typical new TLD launching with fewer than 10,000 initial registrations, delaying a launch for a month or two to pick up some ... read more ...

With only 22 domains registered, .Rich is a biggest explosve in new TLDs. Or is it? - .Rich zone file only has 22 names in it. Last week the .rich top level domain name quietly launched in general availability. And I mean quietly. .Rich registry I-Registry’s website is still promoting the January launch of the .rich sunrise. There’s no mention of registrars carrying the domain, either. I can only find a handful of registrars supporting the domain. Oh, and it comes with a steep price tag: about two grand a year. That’s not a typo. IP Mirror is ... read more ...

Power of Press: London Standard’s front page essay about .London - London Evening Standard dedicates half of front page to .london web address. .City domain names are popular with local press, and here’s a great example. Michael Blend (formerly with Demand Media) snapped this photo in London today. It’s basically a half page ad for .london courtesy of the publication, which is in the domain’s ... read more ...

I finally purebred a new TLD. Here is a (long) story. - I registered four new TLDs today. It took two hours. Today was the day. I finally registered a domain in a new TLD. Actually it looks like I ended up with four registrations, all in .link. Here is my story. Genre: horror. When I got to the office this morning I decided I was going to do whatever it took to register a domain in .link. .Link is the first truly “generic” domain to hit the market, and at about $10/year it’s also reasonably priced. Since it’s generic, ... read more ...

More new TLD auctions on tap, and Uniregistry appears to be participating - Private auctions taking place later this month. With the start of ICANN’s “Auctions of Last Resort” quickly approaching, some new top level domain applicants are working on last minute contention set resolutions. Famous Four submits .Sport reconsideration request…with Ombudsman’s support - Ombudsman recommends new panelist hear .sport community objection. I haven’t written about many new TLD objection appeals (reconsideration requests) because there are so many and few have a chance of succeeding. The reconsideration request is based on Famous Four’s recent disclosure of a link between ... read more ...

Uniregistry Whois tells we because a domain isn’t available - Whois explains if domain is on name collision list. One of the most frustrating challenges of pre-registering new top level domain names is having the registrar return a search “not available”. You end up asking yourself “why isn’t it available?” The first instinct is to blame the registry for holding back what appears to be a good domain name. Odds are that’s not the case. Instead, the domain name is temporarily blocked due to name collisions. These domains ... read more ...

Next week is colorful for new TLDs: 5 Schillings, Afilias colors, and a bit of buzz - Lots of new domains enter general availability next week, and only two of them are from Donuts. Only two of Donuts’ new top level domain names enter their “true” general availability phase next week. It will still be a big week for new TLDs as other applicants launch domains. April 15 .Buzz gets buzzing on Tuesday with broad registrar support. GoDaddy is charging $49.99 and I’ve found other registrars charging as low at $37.99. Tax day is also Frank Schilling’s ... read more ...

Another 0-for-18 with new TLDs - I tried to register 18 new domains today. I failed once again. Five more of Donuts’ new top level domain names revert to standard pricing today — .florist, .solar, .coffee, .house, and .international. I came up with 18 domains that I thought might be worth registering in these new extensions. Regrettably, I went 0-for-18. Perhaps I’m not being creative enough. I’m admittedly coming up with domain ideas that many others would think of, too. But the results ... read more ...

It features Adrienne McAdory of .Wed, Daniel Negari of .XYZ, Daniel Schindler of Donuts and domain attorney Thomas Brackey. 10 new TLDs now tip 10,000 registrations each - .Center appears to have hit the milestone, making it the tenth domain to do so. Ten new top level domain names have now eclipsed the 10,000 registration milestone. That’s according to new TLD tracking site nTLDStats.com. Actual zone files show the tenth one is slightly below 10,000, but given the number of “dark” domains without nameservers typically found in a TLD, the 10-at-10k number is probably correct.
