Domain Registrars Often Blamed for Customers’ Mistakes -
Critical customer mistakes often blamed on domain registrars.
When online backup service CrashPlan.com went down earlier this month, the company was quick to blame its domain name registrar GoDaddy. Code 42 Software, which runs the CrashPlan.com service, tweeted about how GoDaddy “mistakenly removed our root nameserver entry”, “inappropriately took over our DNS”, and did a DNS “hijack”.
What Code 42 Software never tweeted was that it had mistakenly ... read more ...

As New Domain Registrations Fall, Domain Registrars Get Desperate -
Domain registrars seek new profit opportunities.
Yesterday’s news that new domain name registrations are down sharply and the total base of domains registered is stagnant is bad news for domain name registrars.
For years, registrars have been able to count on new registrations to fuel growth. Although the margin on new registrations is small, registrars earn money by cross selling other products to registrants. So the typical margin on a domain may be only $2, ... read more ...

New Restrictions for Domain Name Resellers are Coming -
New restrictions face domain name resellers.
Domain name registrar resellers will face new restrictions under ICANN’s new registrar accreditation agreement.
Several of these restrictions were spelled out in an email from eNom to its resellers yesterday:
1. If, in the future, eNom is obligated to provide a link to an ICANN webpage, Resellers must also provide such a link (at this time no link is necessary).
2. Resellers are prohibited from displaying the ICANN or ... read more ...

Domain Registrar eNom Sued. Here’s My Take. -
Man sues eNom after domain (not in his name) is transferred to someone else.
One of the costs of doing business as a domain registrar is the inevitable lawsuits. Most of these are trademark suits where the plaintiff includes the registrar of a domain name as an defendant. But some of them are more interesting, such as a suit against eNom for allegedly failing to implement appropriate domain transfer safeguards.
Plaintiff William Georgevich claims he bought the ... read more ...

eNom Ensnared in Cybersquatting Lawsuit -
Lawsuit claims domain name registrar transferred domain name back to cybersquatter.
It’s not unusual to find a domain name registrar named in a cybersquatting lawsuit because an infringing domain is registered with them. But a case filed June 2 in U.S. District Court against eNom involves an alleged inappropriate transfer back to a cybersquatter. Here’s what happened, according to the lawsuit.
Financial services company First American won the domain name firstamerican.com ... read more ...

Special Olympics, The R-Word, and One Embarassing Domain Name -
Domain tasting operation picks up a domain and parks it with the “r” word.
[Updated: eNom is now forwarding the domain name to r-word.org and says it will transfer ownership to Special Olympics.] In many ways President Obama’s gaffe on The Tonight Show last night was the best thing to happen to the Special Olympics in a long time. (Obama, speaking about his lack of bowling skills, suggested his performance was like the Special Olympics). Not only can the ... read more ...

Larry Seltzer Struggles with “Whois Identity Theft” -
eWeek writer can’t get copycat whois record changed.
I’ve heard people complain about “whois identity theft” before. Essentially, this is when someone uses your name on their whois record. You can imagine how this could potentially be troubling for you, depending on the domain name. But in the case of eWeek writer Larry Seltzer, the “identity thief” went several steps further.
First, the domain that is being spoofed is LarrySeltzer.net. Second, the ... read more ...

NameKing Still King of Domain Tasting -
Registrar NameKing still biggest domain taster, but numbers declining.
Domain registrar NameKing.com is still the king of domain tasting.
NameKing, a subsidiary of Oversee.net, continues to drop nearly 1 million .com domains during the add grace period each month. As I predicted, ICANN’s budget measure to stem domain tasting curtailed the practice but did not eliminate it.
The graph below shows the number of .com domains NameKing dropped during the add grace period ... read more ...

3/31/09: Death of Domain Tasting (Or is it?) -
Domain tasting is down, and will take another hit in March. But that may not be the end of it…
Domain tasting — the practice of registering a domain to test for traffic and deleting it for a refund within a specified grace period — is down 84% since ICANN inacted a budget measure to make the scheme more expensive. But that was just a temporary fix. By March 31, 2009, all registrars will face even harsher penalties for engaging in the practice. But as I detail ... read more ...

eNom Phishing Attacks Continue and Morph -
Latest attack is seemingly innocuous maintenance notice.
Domain registrar eNom, the second largest domain registrar in the world, continues to be hit with phishing attacks. The first attack resembled an inaccurate whois report. The new one is a routine maintenance reminder.
What’s interesting about the latest phishing attempt is that it doesn’t compel recipients to visit Enom’s site to take any action. Typically phishing attacks scare recipients into taking ... read more ...

Moniker: Kentucky Cannot Have Our Customers’ Domains -
Moniker assures its clients that their domain names are safe.
In case there were any doubts (and I heard some), Moniker customers can rest assured that the company is fighting to keep your domains from ill-advised state governors.
Speaking specifically about the situation with the Kentucky governor, Moniker founder and president Monte Cahn released the following statement to Domain Name Wire today:

Moniker joins other registrars in offering promotions prior to a wholesale price increase that goes into effect October 1. The current wholesale price of .com domains, including the ICANN fee, is $6.62. The price jumps to $7.06 on October 1. eNom is ... read more ...

GoDaddy Group Registers 30 Millionth Domain Name -
RulesofSaving.com, registered by a Connecticut man yesterday, pushes company over milestone.
A tip of the hat to GoDaddy Group, which runs GoDaddy.com, Wild West Domains, and Blue Razor, for crossing the 30 million domains registered mark. This number appears to reflect the total number of domains currently registered. Given expirations, that means GoDaddy has registered a lot more domains than that over its lifetime.
According to RegistrarStats.com, GoDaddy.com ... read more ...

Sedo and Pool Explain Employee Policies for Bidding -

ICANN Puts eNom and Moniker “On Notice” -
eNom and Moniker were named in “Worst Spam Offenders” report.
In the words of Stephen Colbert, ICANN has put eNom and Moniker “On Notice”. The two registrars were named in a recent report from KnujOn titled “The 10 Worst Registrars in terms of spam advertised junk product sites”.
That title is a bit misleading, or perhaps I’m the only one who doesn’t quite understand how KnujOn calculated which registrars were worst. The report (pdf) considered a ... read more ...

37% of respondents in Domain Name Wire’s third annual domain survey use SnapNames more often than other expired domain catching services. This is the third year in a row that SnapNames had led the charts, despite a very challenging year for the service.
After being acquired by Oversee.net, SnapNames lost key registrars Network Solutions and eNom. The two registrars formed a competing drop catcher ... read more ...

A look back at a watershed year for domains.
It’s time again for Domain Name Wire’s annual roundup of the domain industry. In 2006, the top stories were surging domain values and major investors entering the market. This year includes some familiar stories, but also includes new trends in the industry.
