NCC Group’s new ‘.trust’ domain promises Internet security overhaul - With a flood of new general top-level domains (gTLDs) reaching Internet users in 2014, security UK firm NCC Group and a clutch of large Internet brands have announced a new secure domain they hope will turn out to be the most significant of them all. Called ‘.Trust’, at first it’s not clear that this is anything cleverer than a bit of security engineering for businesses that want to stick .trust on the end of their e-commerce websites and emails.  Does the world need yet another gTLD, even ... read more ...

What’s in a top-level domain name? - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is currently in the process of evaluating 1,930 applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), in the hope of ushering in a new era for the Internet and enabling organisations to register domains such as .shop or .bank alongside existing gTLDs like .com and .org. Why would anyone care about their Web address? I hear you ask. Surely, in the age of search engines and social networks, a URL carries about as much weight as a telephone ... read more ...

AsiaOne: “Major firms to use names as website domain suffixes” - AsiaOne.com wrote an article today that talked about brands in Asia that will be adopting their own brand extension and using it over .com or say .co.jp. One company mentioned in the article was Dai Nippon Printing Co, the company is publicly traded in Japan. The company said that the new domain has been attractive for regular consumers, but, still uses its previous domain at dnp.co.jp. Of course that makes sense for any company that switches to a new gtld, but for me the confusion was what to use ... read more ...

ROTD auction during NamesCon will sell a lot of domain names - Sell-through rate at next week’s auction is guaranteed to be high. Right of the Dot (ROTD) is hosting a live domain name auction next Tuesday during NamesCon. From the looks of it, they’re going to sell a lot of domain names. The only question is how much they’ll sell for. Already 31 domain names have pre-bids that have met their reserves (mostly on no reserve domain names). That means the auction is already at about a 30% sell-through rate on a planned inventory ... read more ...

DQZ.com and other Expired Domain Name Sales - DQZ.com among the leaders at NameJet over the past week. When it comes to 3-letter .COM domains, value is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Enough domain investors agree to pay within a certain range based on scarcity, observed sales, and the opportunity to resell to one another that a given LLL.com is often purchased without reference to any conceivable use or meaning. That could easily be the case with NameJet’s $12.4k sale of DQZ.com last week; ... read more ...

GoDaddy Auctions implements bidder verification - I think this is fairly ironic news, considering how much trouble they have with the simplest things such as auto charging a paypal account. My partners and I have a Paypal agreement with GoDaddy and have for some years. We keep a balance of a min of $30k in it at all dues as a float. Due to sales, etc., sometimes it even has over $100k in it. Yet GoDaddy auctions consistently fails to auto charge it several times a month. I’m on many platform, and depend on these pieces of software ... read more ...

Innovative Auctions Ltd., the same company handling many private new top level domain name contention set auctions, is holding an auction for .REISE on February 27. How Correctica done me demeanour smarter - Service finds errors that spell and grammar checkers don’t. When I write a post for Domain Name Wire, I act as researcher, writer and editor.
