Pictures from a biggest domain name eventuality ever -
Scenes from the first day of ICANN 50 in London.
Close to 3,500 people registered for the ICANN 50 meeting in London this week, making it the biggest domain-name related event ever.
The surge in attendance has to do with a confluence of events, especially the U.S. government’s recent plans to eventually no longer be involved with the contract related to IANA functionality.
ICANN books meeting venues well in advance, so it wasn’t able to switch up venues to accommodate ... read more ...

.NGO domain name: a go or no go for charities and NGOs? -
Earlier this year, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) released more than 1,000 new top-level domain names, or “TLDs”.
You will recognise .com and .co.uk domain names, as well as the TLD favoured by charities – .org or org.uk.
But with the slew of new domain suffixes, from .ngo to .xyz (yes, there really is a .xyz domain), it is now more difficult than ever to understand what you as a charity of not-for-profits to focus on.
For example, if you live or work in the ... read more ...

Does gTLD Registration Volume Measure Success? -
For some time, the measure of success of a TLD was volume of registrations, or strictly speaking, Domains Under Management (DUMs). Who better than .com to validate the truth of that metric? More recently, this same metric has been applied to new gTLDs, especially those who achieve volume quickly, by whatever means necessary. These gTLDs are fawned over, written about, and effectively set up as the standard for other gTLDs to aspire to.
But I'd like to challenge that notion. The quick accumulation ... read more ...

TechCrunch.com just covered the new Google Domains name registrar.
The only surprise for TechCrunch is that its taken Google so long to get into the business:
“The move makes enough sense that it’s actually kind if surprising that it’s taken Google this long. ”
“While domains aren’t generally considered a massive-margin business, they’ve always seemed like a glaring omission in Google’s offerings; a missing puzzle piece, almost.
