A good snyopsis of Verisign’s corner contract -
Investor does a pretty good job explaining how Verisign has a license to print money.
Verisign has a wonderful license to print money.
Its contract with ICANN to run .com allows it to charge $7.85 per .com domain name registered. The company enjoys fat 55% operating margins as a result.
Stephen Pomeroy of Pomeroy Capital Partners, L.P. recently sent a letter to his limited partners about Verisign (of which his fund is a stockholder) and published it on SeekingAlpha.

Picking a baby name formed on domain name availability -
Site generates list of available domain names for naming a baby.
A lot of domain name registrars have pushed out PR in recent years about parents snapping up a domain name for their newborn babies.
I have one matching my daughter’s name, and even registered them up for my nieces and nephews should they ever want to use them.
A new site aims to help parents name their baby by telling them what domain names are available.
Call it crazy, but it’s kind of fun.

There are a lot of great subscription-based services for the domain name industry. Here are four that I use on a regular basis.
FreshDrop $19.95 per month
FreshDrop is my go-to source for finding the best expiring domain names. A recent redesign might take long-time users a bit to get used to, but Freshdrop has a number of powerful filtering tools under the hood.
I’ve used FreshDrop to find a ... read more ...

A demeanour inside today’s practical domain name tradeshow -
Virtual tradeshow is clunky but presents a good opportunity to chat with domain name companies.
I remember going to a virtual tradeshow about a decade ago. It was clunky and hard to use.
Apparently that’s the case in 2014 as well.
I just attended Webfair Virtual, an online tradeshow featuring a bunch of domain name companies.
The process of registering, downloading software, and navigating the show floor was rather cumbersome. (Once you figure out how to chat ... read more ...

Reputation first. Everything else is just details.

The biggest factor by far is reputation, according to participants in this year’s Domain Name Wire survey.
Survey-takers were asked to select the “primary reason” they use the escrow service they use most often.
Asked to choose between eight factors, 46% said reputation is most important. That’s a strong number made even more ... read more ...

How domain registrars and merchants accept Bitcoin but banking risk -
Several companies make it easier to accept digital currencies with reduced risk.
I’ve always wondered how companies like Overstock.com and NameCheap.com accept bitcoin payments while avoiding the risk of an exchange dying (e.g. Mt. Gox) and currency fluctuations.
I got the answer last week when I ran in to Jessica Besseling at DomainFest.
Besseling formerly worked for DomainSponsor and DDC.com, and now she’s Sr. Director of Business Development for GoCoin.

Why Neustar paid $109 million for .Co and what it means for new TLDs -
While the circumstances behind Neustar’s acquisition of .CO Internet were unique, it bodes well for operators of new TLDs.
Neustar announced yesterday that it is paying $109 million to acquire .CO Internet, operator of the .co domain name.
It’s a big price tag, and here’s how it breaks down:
* $68 per currently registered .Co domain
* 5x current annual revenue run rate
* 6.5x current annual revenue run rate when you account for Neustar losing $4 million a year ... read more ...

I only went 0-for-17 induction new domain names -
Between name collisions, registry reserved domains, and premium pricing, the best new TLD opportunities are difficult to find.
I think there are some opportunities for domainers to make money with new top level domain names, but they are limited.
My thinking is that some domain names that can be obtained for under $100 with low renewal fees can be sold within 1-5 years for low $1,000s to the right buyer. It’s very risky, and with typical sell through rates I’ll ... read more ...

.CO creates its own home on the road for SXSW Interactive.
.CO went small the first time it came to SXSW Interactive in Austin. It was more of a scouting trip than a marketing one. I remember catching up with the company at the W Hotel that year. .CO Internet CEO Juan Diego Calle said “Wow, this is big”.
