What Would Microsoft-Yahoo Mean for Domainers? -
The acquisition could mean a lot. Or maybe not.
I had a conversation with myself this morning about Microsoft’s (MSFT) proposed buyout of Yahoo (YHOO). It went something like this:
Me: So, Andrew, what do you think this deal will mean for domainers?
Myself: Tough call. From a search perspective, this is #3 taking over #2. It will be interesting to see how they merge the two company’s pay-per-click platforms.
Me: Yeah, both platforms lag Google Adwords. ... read more ...

Auto-Generated Web Sites, Part 2 -
New services show the trend continues, but are automated site generators the future of domain parking?
In September 2007 I wrote about DomainEmbarking.com, a service that generates a parking page that looks more like a real web site than a parked page.
For a brief history of automated site generation, here’s a snippet from that article:
A few years ago savvy entrepreneurs figured out they could mass-develop web sites based on niche keywords and penetrate search ... read more ...

How to Read Domain Forums -
Reading beyond the headline of a domain sales thread can be challenging. Here’s a helpful guide.
Earlier this week I lamented about how 99% of the domains at domain forums aren’t worth anything. If you’re going to sort through the many names at forums in hopes of finding a winner, perhaps I can help you find your way. Qtags Pitch Shows How to Use .Mobi -
An elevator pitch for qtags shows a good use of .mobi.
I’ve already ranted about bad web 2.0 naming from the Rice Alliance Information Technology and Web 2.0 Venture Forum at Rice University last week. But I also saw a good use of the .mobi domain name during the conference.
qtags is a service that lets you text a phrase to a text number and get information back. For example, you might see a sign at a store that’s hiring and text ‘jobs’ to a 5 digit number. ... read more ...

Google Slap hits Developed Domains -
An updated from Leonard Holmes of ParkQuick.
Search engine ranking gets more important as more domainers develop their domains. SEO experts may debate whether Google’s PageRank number is really important for search engine ranking; but it is important for bragging rights and for selling ads. While Google usually avoids listing parked domains, some parked domains do end up with pagerank. I’ve also seen some of my WhyPark domains beginning to rank.
Google recently ... read more ...

Mobile Ads are Worth(less) -
What is a click-through on a mobile phone worth?
In November 2006, Sedo announced that it would serve parked pages on .mobi domains. The parked pages are simple, text-based lists of ad links. One of the .mobi parked pages I reviewed showed ads for a credit card. If you clicked the link from your mobile phone, it took you to a credit card application that could not be viewed on most mobile phones and wouldn’t work without SSL security. In other words, the clicks ... read more ...
