Live Current Partners with Domain Strategies to Develop Karate.com - Deal will help monetize one of Live Current’s many valuable domain names. Hot of the heels of its latest cricket media announcement, Live Current Media (OTC: livc.ob) has announced a new deal with Rob Monster’s Domain Strategies for the domain name Karate.com. Live Current and Domain Strategies will develop a new company to own and develop the domain name. Because Live Current is publicly traded, we’ll likely get a good look at how this deal plays out through ... read more ...

DomainConvergence to Host Auction — With a Twist - Conference will include auction managed by Fusu. DomainConvergence, a new domain conference coming to Canada October 6-8, will include a live and online domain name auction managed by Fusu. So what’s the twist? People selling domains in the auction will have to pay 1% of the reserve price up front. The goal is to encourage low reserves. I’m a big fan of this market-based approach to ensuring high quality domains are submitted at reasonable reserves. It works ... read more ...

Sedo Sells Coiffurefemme.net for $80,000 - French .net term sells for close to $80,000. Sedo has completed the sale of coiffurefemme.net for 55,000 EUR, or almost $80,000 USD. The domain means women’s hairstyle in French. This is a surprising price paid for this domain, and the domain’s whois record is protected by whois privacy so it’s difficult to understand who bought it. The .com version of this domain is listed for sale on Sedo and BuyDomains with no specific price. If anyone has insight to ... read more ...

How Monte Cahn & Crew Pulled It Off - $3 million auction was well executed. If anyone was scared about how yesterday’s live domain auction at TRAFFIC would go, their fears dissipated about 30 minutes into the auction. Domains were selling and bidding was intense. Sure, the final tally of $3 million ($4 million for all auctions this week) was much less than the $10 million last year, but it’s a coup given what’s going on in the economy. So how did Monte Cahn and his crew at Moniker pull it off? 1. ... read more ...

Backdrop for this Week’s Domain Auctions is Shaky - This week’s onslaught of domain auctions couldn’t have come at a more unstable time. Call it the week of domain name auctions: two from Moniker, plus auctions from Rick Latona Auctions, Aftermarket.com, and Sedo. Also call it the week of economic uncertainty. Yesterday afternoon the backdrop for the Aftermarket.com auction was knowledge that President Bush was going to address the nation about the financial crisis just a few hours later. In that speech, he ... read more ...

Sedo Great Domains Auction Ends Today 2 PM EDT - Domain auction has many domains that have hit reserve. Domain name aftermarket and parking company Sedo’s monthly Great Domains auction ends today at 2 PM Eastern. Auctions receiving bids in the final minutes will be extended. Two domains in the auction have hits six figures but neither are close to meeting the reserve price. Planet.com is at $200,000, well below the $500,000-$1,000,000 reserve. Fly.com, which changed hands for a reported $1.5 million in 1999, ... read more ...

Stars May Align for Moniker Domain Name Auction during 3PM Today - Outlook getting rosier by the minute for Moniker Auction. [Update: FinancialAid.com sells for $800,000.] Earlier today I wrote about how financial uncertainty is peaking and this has weighed down on the live domain name auctions this week. I also said that Moniker’s timeslot — 3 PM EDT today — may end up being a very lucky happenstance. It’s looking more that way. Democrats and Republicans have apparently come up with a bailout plan and the stock market ... read more ...

Rick Latona Domain Name Auction Off to Screaming Start - Rick Latona’s highly anticipated auction takes place in New York today. Update: Here are the results. Rick Latona Auctions, LLC’s first live auction will take place at the TRAFFIC conference in Brooklyn today. The auction goes live at 1:30 PM EDT today. Last night Moniker held the first of its two auctions, which was modestly successful but certainly didn’t quell fears about how much money people have to invest in domains right now. But today the story will ... read more ...

Sedo Tweaks Domain Listings - Sedo makes changes to domain listings pages. Last month Sedo rolled out major enhancements to its domain listings. The domain sales and parking company just made a few more changes based on feedback from the domain community. First, the Seller Activity Index represents 12 months of completed sales and is represented by a colored meter instead of stars. I like this change as stars seem to indicate how “good” something is, whereas this index is merely an indicator ... read more ...

Rick Latona Domain Name Auction Nets $750,000 - Unofficial results show nearly $750,000 in sales at domain auction. [Update 9-24-08: According to a comment on Domain Name News, some of the results on the Proxibid system were inaccurate. The following names didn’t sell: ResearchLab(s).com, atriums.com, customboots.com, daytraders.com, catfood.com, cognacs.com. But lotterynumbers.com did sell. Domain Name News calculates the new unofficial tally as $681,850.] The results are in for the Rick Latona Auctions, ... read more ...

Aftermarket.com Sells $150,000 in Live Domain Auction - Aftermarket.com auction ends with $150k in sales. The Aftermarket.com auction at TRAFFIC just concluded with $148,700 in sales according to my unofficial tally. Overall the online auction system worked fairly well with no latency. There are a few kinks to work out, though. For example, the bid increments used by the auctioneer didn’t match bidding increments requested online. Sometimes they were higher and sometimes lower. The auctioneer would ask the house ... read more ...

November Auction is Defining Moment for .Mobi - Auction of 200 reserved domain names will test the aftermarket for .mobi domain names. I know the folks over at dotMobi like me, but I’m honored they selected my birthday to launch a massive .mobi auction over at Sedo. The auction starting November 5 will include 200 reserved domain names, and there are some doozies such as Blackjack.mobi, Games.mobi (which previously “sold” for $401,500), and xxx.mobi. After slowly auctioning off many of its previous domains ... read more ...

Aftermarket.com Takes Different Approach to Domain Auctions - While many are focusing on big ticket domains at Moniker and Rick Latona, I’ll be paying attention to Aftermarket.com auction. It’s go time. TRAFFIC hits New York City this week and there will be four auctions, including an opening night auction featuring mostly domains from Rick and Howard, plus auctions from Moniker, Rick Latona Auctions, and Aftermarket.com (TrafficZ). Already the competition has proven valuable, pushing the different players to sell themselves ... read more ...

Domain Auctions aren’t for End Users. Get Over It. - Domain name auctions have never been, and will never be, for end users. I’ve read a lot of complaints over the past week about how late the domain auction houses have released their auction lists for this week’s TRAFFIC show in NYC. That’s a fair complaint. Domain lists should be released weeks, not days, before an auction. But the main complaint I hear is that by releasing the lists so late, it makes it impossible to market the domains to end users. This ... read more ...

NameBio 4.0 Includes Powerful Enhancements - Domain sales database now easier to use and more valuable for finding domain name sales data. NameBio, a web site offering historical domain sales data, launched version 4 last week. I’ve been playing around with it and am very impressed. It’s now easier to use and allows you to quickly adjust search criteria. There’s also a new premium service. The neatest feature is that you don’t have to click a search button after entering a query. NameBio 4 starts ... read more ...

Bankrupt Domains go to Auction Block - Auction company to sell trademarks and domains related to failed online bank, doctor’s web site. IP Auctions, Inc., is getting ready to auction off the NetBank.com domain name and associated trademarks. The defunct online bank was one of the more popular online banks in its heyday until the feds had to step in and takeover. Will This Domain Downturn be Different from a Last? - Hard economic times may suppress domain prices, but how good is the buying opportunity? I’m generally bullish on the domain name market. And I’m excited about the possibility of buying domains cheaper tomorrow than they were a year ago due to the dismal economy. But there’s a flipside to this story that domain name investors need to think about before jumping in. The last time domains were a great bargain was after the tech bubble burst earlier this decade. ... read more ...

SantaRosa.com Sells for $75k, Sedo Sells .de Domain for $118k - Chad Wright’s GeoDomain auction, along with another strong week at Sedo, keep sales momentum going. Domain investor Chad Wright has a bit more money in his pocket to invest in real estate. As explained in Domain Name Wire’s story a couple weeks ago, Wright listed a handful of his good city and state domain names on eBay to raise money to buy distressed property. 4 of the domains hit their reserves on eBay, resulting in $34,000 in sales: Oregon.net $11,300 Massachusetts.net ... read more ...

How To Value City Domain Names - Mike! If you don’t mind me saying, I have to disagree with the metrics you have used to value a geo-domain or any domain for that matter. Let me explain why I think all these prior BR(Before Rick) valuation models are fundamentally flawed. Fair enough, when after market domaining started, we naturally had to use some measure to value domains and to be fair, natural-type in traffic is what a lot of domainers seem to have been using, because in a growing industry that is still highly ... read more ...

Domainer Selling Virtual Real Estate to Buy Physical Real Estate - Chad Wright of WebQuest Inc. is selling premium geo domains to buy foreclosed homes. People draw a lot of comparisons between domain names and real estate. One long time domainer, Chad Wright, is trading in some of his “virtual” real estate in order to buy real estate he can walk on. dotMobi to Enforce Compliance Rules for Premium Domains (Eventually) - dotMobi says it will start to enforce guidelines for domains won at auction. In June I wrote a second article about premium dotMobi domain names that were won at auctions at Sedo. At the time, not a single domain won at the first Sedo auction was in compliance. Compliance basically requires a dotMobi compatible parking page followed by a mobile web site within 6 months. Although it’s not surprising that few of the domains had real web sites within 6 months, ... read more ...
