China reopens .cn to individuals, though registrars might be delayed to follow -
Individuals can now register .cn domains, but domain registrars may still be cautious about offering the domains.
After clamping down on .cn domain registrations a few years ago, China is beginning to open up its country code top level domain again.
Yesterday China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), the registry for .cn domain names, announced that registration would again be available to individuals instead of just businesses.

Domaining’s Francois Launches New Domain Registrar That Includes FREE “UDRP Insurance”: DONA.com - Francois Carrillo the man behind Domaining.com and other sites in the domain industry just launched a new domain name registrar, DONA.com which is offering what its calling “UDRP Insurance” with every registration, plus is contributing 30% of all profits to the Internet Commerce Association (ICA).

Bari Meyerson latest to change jobs within domain industry -
Meyerson lands at eNom.
Once people discover the domain industry and all it has to offer, it’s hard to move to any other industry.
The latest move comes courtesy of Bari Meyerson. Meyerson left her long-time post at Moniker as it was being sold to Key Drive. Today eNom announced that it has hired Meyerson to work with domainers.

Tucows Has Record Quarter For Domain Name Sales & For Sales Of $10K or More - I just read through the earning call transcript that Tucows held yesterday after the released their earnings and found a few interesting facts and figures.
On the call Tucows CEO Elliot Noss said that :

A long time fixture at Go Daddy is moving on.
Christine Jones, General Counsel Corporate Secretary for Go Daddy, will leave the company Friday after 10 years.

Demand Media Reports: Beats Expectations Sends Stock Soaring & Spends $18M On New gTLD’s - Demand Media, Inc. (NYSE: DMD) just reported its earnings for the 1st Q of 2012 beating expectations and sending the stock soaring in aftermarket trading up almost 20%
Some interesting stuff in this report including that Demand invested $18 Million in new gTLD’s.

Namecheap.com Hits The 3 Million Mark - Namecheap.com just hit the 3 million domain under management milestone.
The countdown on the site is as of publication 3,001,439 domain names.
In celebration of the 3 millionth domain name, NameCheap.com gave away $3,000 to the 3 millionth domain registration/transfer and I guess they will be making an announcement shortly on who won the cash and what the domain name was.

Which domains a tip 10 domain registrars promote -
.co is a favorite among non-VeriSign domains.
Registrars have many options when it comes to which top level domains to promote to customers. Sometimes this is based purely on demand calculations. In other instances domain registries strike deals with domain registrars to give them premium shelf space or promotion on their home pages.

I’ve written before about how Go Daddy, Network Solutions, and Register.com offer discounted registrations in Google ads for the term “domain name”.
Both are pushing out special deals via other channels, too.

.Co expands series of accredited registrars -
Instra among most recent registrars to become accredited for .co.
Most of the time you see top level domains operators try to get as many registrars as possible to carry their domains as possible.
But .co took a different tack, launching with just 10 accredited registrars. These registrars (and their resellers) were the only ones who offered the domain at launch.

Site covering Bo Xilai liaison led to Name.com DDoS, eNom rejects domain as well -
Name.com and eNom play hot potato with domain name.
Name.com got hit with a massive distributed denial of service attack at the end of last week, and it appears this is because a site covering the downfall of Chinese Communist Party official Bo Xilai was registered with its service.
The domain registrar had received an anonymous email saying it needed to drop Boxun.com, reports The Washington Post. Shortly thereafter it was hit with a DDoS.

How the company manages 52 million domains and hosts 5 million web sites.
Data Center Knowledge has an interesting story today about Go Daddy’s data center operations.
The most amusing part: when the company started it was running servers at founder Bob Parsons’ ranch. It quickly outgrew that.

Go Daddy gets obvious for “Tools for redirecting to a book website” -
Go Daddy gets another patent.
Go Daddy Operating Company, LLC has been granted U.S. patent number 8,156,180 for “Tools for redirecting to a book website”.
I wrote about this patent application when it was published last year.
It describes a number of methods that someone could be redirected to a web site specific to a book, such as entering the ISBN for the book.

Patent goblin goes after GoDaddy in latest suit -
GoDaddy joins the likes of Google and Yahoo as defendants in cloud storage patent troll lawsuits.
A non-practicing entity, a.k.a. patent troll, has filed a lawsuit against GoDaddy for allegedly infringing some of its cloud storage patents.
The suit, filed yesterday in Federal District Court in Texas, claims that GoDaddy infringed two of Titanide Ventures, LLC’s patents (pdf).
