.Vegas off to solid start with lots of locals registering domain name.
The .Vegas domain name launched on Monday and generated about 3,000 domain name registrations in the first hours of availability, plus another 1,400 registrations on Tuesday.

Pricing configuration issue delays launch of three top level domain names.
New top level domain name applicant Radix has delayed the launch of its first three domain names until tomorrow.
.Website, .Press and .Host will all launch tomorrow at noon EDT. They were scheduled to release at the same time today.
Sandeep Ramchandani, business head for Radix, told Domain Name Wire that there was a pricing configuration issue that some registrars ran into. Although the TLDs ... read more ...
Wow: Amazon.com buys .Buy for $4.6 million, .Tech sells for $6.8 million -
Amazon.com paid $4.6 million to win rights to .buy top level domain name, but that wasn’t the most expensive TLD auction on Wednesday.
You might think new top level domain names aren’t meeting early expectations, but applicants still apparently value the opportunity very high.
ICANN held its second “auction of last resort” for new top level domain names today. Three contention sets were resolved at multi-million dollar prices.
Here are the results:

$25,000 new TLD sale among this week’s finish user domain name sales -
Travel company is among at least four end users who bought new TLDs at Sedo this past week.
There is an aftermarket for new top level domain names. It’s not huge, and few people are getting rich from it. But there is a market.
Take this week’s $25,000 sale of Baltic.cruises by Viking River Cruises. I’ve seen magazine ads for Viking, which promotes small ship cruises in European rivers for those that don’t want to venture far from shore.
This domain was among ... read more ...

This is a biggest week nonetheless for new TLDs (16 domains!) -
16 domains hit the market this week.
At the end of last month, I wrote about how the next 50 days would be important for new TLDs.
Within that 50 days, this week is perhaps the biggest: 16 domain names will enter general availability.
Call it Launch Week, and it’s really big for two of the portfolio applicants who launch their first owned-and-operated batches.
Let’s get to it.
Monday
It’s a big day for publicly traded Minds + Machines (LSE: MMX).

Watch .Luxury Founder Monica Kirchner on Bloomberg -
.CEO co-founder talks .luxury and new domain names on Bloomberg TV.
Monica Kirchner, co-founder and CEO of Dot Luxury, was on Bloomberg TV this week talking about .Luxury and new top level domain names in general.
It’s really hard talking about top level domain names to an audience that’s never even heard of ICANN, and I think she does a pretty good job.
Kirchner says the company has already sold over 1,200 domain names. Although small compared to other TLDs, ... read more ...

Here are a numbers for this week’s TLD launches -
.London steals the show.
6 new top level domain names launched this week. A simple way to describe the results: .London. everything else is just details.
.London added 12,421 to the zone on the first partial day and another 695 on the second day to bring its total to 35,663.
After that, .digital had the second best launch in terms of registrations. It added 2,159 domains to reach 2,648.

New TLDs this week: .London, .Global and more -
.London headlines this week’s new top level domain name releases.
A GoDaddy advertisement in London for .London.One of the most-watched TLDs on the docket is launching this week as .London goes into general availability on Tuesday.
It will have to compete with Apple for news coverage, but I suspect that tech journalists will be clamoring for something to write about other than “10 ways the new iPhone will blow your MIND!”

Six companies that saw their bids for the .hotel domain name die as a result of a Community Priority Evaluation decision in favor of HOTEL Top-Level-Domain S.a.r.l have asked ICANN for information regarding the decision.

Frank Schilling’s Uniregistry joins Donuts with new TLD releases this week.

Yoyo.email files lawsuit after barrage of URS and UDRP complaints.
Last month I wrote about Yoyo.email Ltd, a company that has found itself in legal hot water after registering over 4,000 .email domain names.
Many of the domain names match well known brands, such as 7eleven.email, Geico.email and Budlight.email. As a result, Yoyo has already been on the receiving end of at least 34 URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension) and UDRP cases.
Yoyo.email is fighting back. Last Friday ... read more ...

This week’s new TLDs supplement between 50 and 10,000 domains on initial day -
One domain is off to a quick start, the others not so much.
Seven new top level domain names launched this week.
By far, .Hamburg for the city of Hamburg was the most registered domain name. (Ironically, this is the one new TLD launch this week that I missed in my weekly preview.)
There are approximately 13,800 .hamburg domain names in the zone file, up about 10,000 on the first day.
On Tuesday, .black added about 100 names to end the day with about 150. I never ... read more ...
The subsequent 50 days will be critical for new TLDs -
Big launches make the next 50 days a key period for new top level domain names.
A lot of new top level domain names have come to market already. Some have flown out of the gate, others are growing modestly, and some have stalled.
In my opinion, the next 50 days will be an important period for new TLDs due to the number of high profile launches and the companies involved.
You can argue that a slow launch doesn’t kill a TLD. But new TLDs have a chance to get some ... read more ...

Why your new TLDs won’t work good with domain parking (yet) -
Domain parking ads don’t consider the full meaning of a domain name that spans the dot.
A couple weeks ago Donuts launched the .cash top level domain name.
This got me thinking about domain parking. I’ve owned a few .com domain names with the term “cash” in them. When they got clicks, they were high dollar clicks. There are lots of expensive Adwords terms related to cash.
So would traffic to something.cash monetize well?
No, not on the basis of the top level ... read more ...

This week in new TLDs: $150k/domain? Plus .black, .hiv, and .creditcard -
Pull out your .creditcard.
This week will be an interesting one for new top level domain names: Afilias takes a different tact on .color domains, an EAP with a $150k price tag, Donuts raises the bar with .creditcard, and the first “social cause” TLD launches.
Tuesday
Following on the lackluster launches of .red, .pink and .blue, Afilias launches .black.
.Red is its most successful color domain so far, but it has received fewer than 2,500 registrations.

Why Frank Schilling’s new train ad uses http:// -
Otherwise, lots of people might not get to the website.
Yesterday Frank Schilling tweeted this picture of a bus ad for his .sexy top level domain name:
Adrian Kinderis, CEO of ARI Registry, responded asking about why the ad includes https://, and Frank Schilling explained:
That lots of cell phone users need to type in http:// before a new TLD if they’re typing the address into their address bar, is a key example of the universal acceptance problem with new TLDs.

New TLDs: is it an awareness, acceptance or direct issue? -
Are domain registrants not aware of new TLD options or do they just not accept them? Or is there just low demand for each .com alternative?
My initial reaction to the underwhelming “out of the gate” registration numbers for new top level domain names this year was that it’s an awareness issue.
99.99% of people have never heard of new TLDs. Once they’re aware, they’ll start registering them.
After taking a look at registrar search yesterday, I’m starting ... read more ...

.Cash and .Fund any get fewer than 1,000 registrations -
Slow start for the two new TLDs that launched yesterday (for which we have data.)
Five top level domain names launched yesterday. Unfortunately, ICANN’s centralized zone file system only has updated zone files for two of them.
.Cash gained 725 registrations to end the day with 909 in the zone file.
.Fund picked up just 414 to get to 625.

Domain name hunt is most softened (at some registrars) -
A look at how major domain registrars are handling domain search in the wake of new TLDs.
I’ve written a couple times about the state of registrar search as registrars grapple with an onslaught of new TLDs, most recently at the end of February.
There’s good news for TLD registries: search is getting a lot better.
Let’s run through the registrars I checked last time for an update.

The state of a domain name industry -

I’ve been collecting my thoughts on the domain name business over the past month, and it’s time to put them down in writing.
Here’s what I think about the state of the domain name industry in August, 2014.
