“Exciting Times for TLD Holdings as .London Launch Looms” - ProactiveInvestors.co.uk did a small write up on TLD Holdings the company which just recently raised another $33 million and said they would change their name to Minds+Machines. The stock is up 11% today, of course the stock trades for a very low price so it does not take much to get a large percentage move. I can say this is a perfect example of procrastination on my part, as I constantly was having discussion with a couple friends when the stock was at 5 1/2 pence. I felt it was a cheap hedge in ... read more ...

Deals.XYZ Sells For $8,100 On NameJet.com - In a Namejet.com auction which just closed today the domain name Deals.xyz just sold for $8,100. The price marks the highest amount paid for a .xyz domain name, a new gTLD extension which hasn’t even been delegated yet. If should be noted that the application fee for .XYZ was $185,000 so this one domain name repays the registry 4% of the application fee. We have already heard of aftermarket sales of recently released new gTLD domain names, but this has to be a record for a new gTLD prior to delegation Congrats ... read more ...

The .Com Firewall: Is A .Com Registration Better Protection From New gTLD’s Than Trademarks? - An interesting point of view on new gTLD’s, trademarks and .com registrants was published today by Cybrands.com Basically the author of the post is claiming that owning a .com can be better protection against potentially infringing new gTLD domain names than a trademark. He calls it the .com firewall: “In computing terms, firewall has many definitions.” In domaining terms, what I’m referring to is the practice of registering the .com version of a domain name which can effectively quash incentive ... read more ...

CNBC “New Internet domains are coming, and tiny biz needs to be wary” - Cadie Thompson wrote a piece for CNBC earlier today that included comments from Kathy Nielsen from Sedo. The article focuses on the potential problems that a small business without a robust intellectual property team and a small budget may face. This makes it easier for cybersquatters to buy a domain name that a legitimate business may want. It also opens the door for more cybercriminals to pose as an established website in order to steal user information. And while big corporations have the resources ... read more ...

Slam Strategy “Dotcom means zero to a consumer” - Shaun Le Cornu from Slam Strategy wrote a piece today on their blog about why a dotbrand is better than a brand.com. The article is worth a read as it shows the thought process that those consulting in the space are trying to get across. Obviously there is some bias because everyone wants to talk to brands about the hot new thing and get paid while doing it. That’s fine to get on board the dot whatever train, but make sure the advice is rooted in logic. In the first paragraph Le Cornu states, What ... read more ...

New gTLD’s Take Over The Home Page Of Godaddy - Godaddy has been changing their home page quite a bit over the last couple of months, with one blogger noticing that all references to new gTLD’s were dropped altogether from the home page 10 days ago. Look at Godaddy.com today and new gTLD’s have taken over the home page, the entire home page above the fold. The fact that Godaddy is pushing hard on the new gTLD’s isn’t surprising considering the high profit margins registrars can make from new gTLD’s well  above and beyond .com domains .Guru ... read more ...
