Verisign files opening brief in interest opposite .XYZ - David v. Goliath battle continues in appeals court.
Verisign has filed its opening brief (pdf) with the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, in its dispute with new top level domain name company XYZ.
In October 2015, a federal district judge dismissed Verisign’s lawsuit against the operator of the .xyz domain name. Verisign subsequently appealed.
Verisign argues that the district judge misapplied the standards for summary judgment and misinterpreted statements of fact.

Anyone who has registered a domain name with Web.com registrars Network Solutions and Register.com know that the company sends lots of promotional emails. How many? One per business day.
Now, I know a lot of retailers send daily promotional emails to customers. But I’m not aware of other registrars that do this. If nothing else, it shows there’s not much more juice the company can ring out of customers ... read more ...

Web.com: Verisign did a "blatant bait-and-switch" - Company doesn’t want to provide accounting information to Verisign.
Web.com is fighting back against a Verisign request for more information about how the registrar accounted for .xyz domain name registrations.
Verisign is suing .XYZ for false advertising after .XYZ boasted about its registration volume — which Verisign alleges was inflated by a Network Solutions giveaway. Web.com owns Network Solutions, which gave away hundreds of thousands of .xyz domain names to its customers.

Verisign presses Network Solutions for sum on .XYZ registrations - Company files motion to compel Network Solutions’ parent company to provide a witness.
Verisign has filed a motion (pdf) in a Florida court to compel Web.com, parent company of Network Solutions, to provide a witness to testify about how the registrar accounted for free .xyz domain names.
Network Solutions gave away perhaps hundreds of thousands of .xyz domain names last year. They weren’t just offered for free; They were placed in customer accounts on an opt-out basis.

I got my initial giveaway .XYZ domain name offer today -
Network Solutions finally got around to offering me a free .xyz domain name.
The .XYZ top level domain name continues to grow by thousands of registrations each day due to a Network Solutions giveaway.
I got my first such free domain offer today. It’s interesting to see how the company handles the promotion.
As you probably know by now, Network Solutions’ program is “opt out”, meaning the domain name is put in your account unless you specifically decline.

Patent for domain purchasing system granted ten years after application was filed.
Network Solutions, now part of Web.com, has received a patent for its Certified Offer service…ten years after applying for it.
Network Solutions applied for the patent titled “Certified Offer Service for Domain Names” back in 2004. It was rejected multiple times, but the company successfully amended and appealed.

Here’s the first notable change as a result of Web.com acquiring expired domain marketplace SnapNames.

Registrars are slowly improving their search results to show new top level domain name options, but the experience is far from ideal.

Company will not charge customers for added security service unless they accept it.
Web.com, parent company of Network Solutions and Register.com, came under fire yesterday after informing some customers they would automatically be opted-in to a security program that costs $1,850.

Two domain name companies released third quarter earnings results after the bell yesterday.
Marchex reported GAAP revenue of $40.6 million, compared to $33.7 million in the same quarter of 2012. Its adjusted EBITDA fell to $3.4 million from $4.8 million in Q3 2012.

Company faced multiple outtages this week.
Network Solutions customers experienced outtages this week due to a DDoS attack.
The problems appeared to start on Monday. On Tuesday, Network Solutions reported that “On [Monday], some Network Solutions customer sites were compromised.”
Then on Wednesday, the company posted to its Facebook page that it was facing a DDoS “that is impacting our customers as well as the Network Solutions site.”

As Web.com points out frequently on its investor conference calls, it believes that it has room to grow its cross selling activities to existing customers.

Domain name registrar Network Solutions wants to patent various aspects of a domain privacy service, and has filed a patent application for “Private Domain Name Registration” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The application is technically a continuation of an application the company filed in 2004 but later abandoned. The new application was filed May 25, 2012 and just published (pdf) today.

Verisign has been granted U.S. patent number 8,356,081 for “Automated Domain Name Registration”.
This patent, applied for in 2005, is a divisional patent of 7,000,028, which was filed back in 2000.

Zuccarini sues three companies for negligence.
John Zuccarini has filed another lawsuit (pdf) stemming from the sale of 14 domain names on NameJet.
In this case he counts Network Solutions, NameJet, and now ICANN as defendants.
Zuccarini owes the IRS and creditors $550,000, some of which involves a cybersquatting judgment against him.
