Vertro Reports Earnings Including $285k from Sale of ScreenSavers.com - Successor to FindWhat unloads domain name. Vertro (VTRO) reported second quarter results yesterday, and that included a gain of about $285,000 from the sale of a domain name. Domainers probably know Vertro as the successor of FindWhat. After doing some checking with Vertro, I confirmed that the domain name was Screensavers.com. Moniker auctioned the domain name in a showcase auction earlier this year, selling the domain for $335,000. Vertro took home roughly $285,000 ... read more ...

Moniker Auction Results: 30 .Us Domain Name Sell - US country code auction sells over $40,000 worth of domain names. [Updated: the official tally is 30 domains sold. I originally reported 29 domains sold.] Moniker’s .us domain name auction sold 29 30 of 86 domain names, or 35%. That’s a much stronger showing than recent online auctions held by the company. The key to success was a lot of good keyword domain names with low reserves. Having them at prices most people can afford helped, too. In total over $40,000 ... read more ...

DOMAINfest Extended Auction Bombs - Extended auction fails to live up to success of live auction. Last week DOMAINfest had a successful live domain name auction. Unfortunately, the extended auction didn’t perform too well. Only 8 out of 797 domain names sold, or a sell through rate of only 1%. It’s disappointing, but I’m not terribly surprised. I only came up with five domain names to mention in my preview post a couple days ago. (Mind you, none of the five I chose sold. But it goes to show ... read more ...

In Domain Auctions, Less is More - Offering fewer domains can result in more sales. This month’s SnapNames showcase auction ended with only twelve domain sales for a total of $44,149. That’s a dismal 4% sell through rate. Why did the auction perform so poorly? There are a number of possible reasons, but I think one is that there were too many domains in the auction. Previous SnapNames monthly auctions have had fewer than 100 domains; this one had about 300. Given all of the online auctions ... read more ...

Moniker Trims Silent Auction List for TRAFFIC Auction - Moniker shrinks silent auction, online finance auction ends tomorrow. Responding to complaints about the unwieldy number of domains in its last major silent (extended) domain auction, Moniker has cut the list from about 5,000 to 1,800 for this month’s auction. I’m not sure if the list is small enough even at 1,800, but it’s definitely a move in the right direction. The live auction will feature 187 domains and will take place on Wednesday, October 28. Automated Domain Auction Fulfillment is Worth a Price - Domains at Moniker can be transferred quickly with direct and automatic fulfillment. I often hear grumblings about how Moniker requires you to have domains registered with them in order to submit them to auction. (It’s not a requirement for the big auctions, but there is an added charge if you don’t and the domain sells.) Many people think this is just a way for Moniker to get you to transfer domains to them, but that’s ancillary to the real reason: it allows ... read more ...

Lawyers: We Started Investigating Moniker in 2005 - Lawyers say investigation against Moniker has been long-running. For the record, I have no idea if any of the allegations in Transamerica’s lawsuit against Moniker are true. But I do know that its lawyers bungled the first complaint they filed. It was rife with many “gotchas” that could be proven false with cursory investigation. So I was somewhat surprised to see, in an opposition to Moniker’s request for more time to make a filing, that the law firm says ... read more ...
