ICANN Best Estimate For New gTLD Renewal Rate 50%; 25% For Free Domains: 35% Worst Case - In releasing its 2016 operating budget ICANN made some estimate for the purposes of budgeting revenue from new gTLD’s.
ICANN is saying its “Best” estimate is that the average renewal rate will be 50% for new gTLD’s except for TLD’s that provided free registrations where the renewal rate was estimated at 25%.
On The Low estimate the ICANN seems to be indicating a new gTLD renewal rate of 35% but does not break out the free registrations from paid registrations so that number should have ... read more ...

ICANN Mar 2016 Meeting To Be In Morocco, Oct 2016 In Puerto Rico - The ICANN Board selected locations to hold its meetings for March 2016 and October 2016 before heading out of the ICANN Buenos Airs meeting.
The March 2016 ICANN meeting (ICANN 55) with be held in Marrakech, Morocco which had already been selected for the site for the March 2016 ICANN Meeting after ICANN relocated the meeting scheduled for March 2014 to Singapore during the outbreak of Ebola.
The Marrakech meeting will be held March 5-10 2016

Namecheap Launches Respectourprivacy.com To Save Private Whois Registrations - Namecheap.com, in association with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Fight For The Future (FFTF), launched the website Respectourprivacy.com to allow people to file a comment with ICANN letting them know they object to the proposed rule that would greatly restrict the use of privacy or proxy services on whois records of domain names.
ICANN public comment period closes on July 7th midnight UTC.
As of yesterday there were only 8 comments posted to the ICANN site.

.Sucks Gets Almost 3,400 Domain Registrations At Prices Up To $2,499 in Sunrise - The .Sunrise period for the new gTLD .Sucks generated over 3,400 domain name registrations at pricing ranging up to $2,500 per domain name.
Premium .Sucks Sunrise registrations were sold for up to $2,499, with at a wholesale cost of $2,000 as set by the .sucks registry, Vox Populi Registry Ltd.
If all 3,400 registrations in Sunrise were sold at the $2K premium wholesale price, then Vox Populi just pulled in $6.8 Million

Canada responds to ICANN about .Sucks - Move along, now…
John Knubley, Deputy Minister of Industry Canada, has responded (pdf) to the letter ICANN sent to both the U.S. FTC and Canada regarding the .sucks domain name.
Knubley basically states that this is not a matter for the government, and that if intellectual property rights holders think a .sucks domain infringes their mark, they already know what to do about it:

Bill Passes in House to Give Congress 30 days to examination Internet Transition Plan - TheHill.com is out with an article today about a House subcommittee approving a bill that would require President Obama to give Congress some time to review any Internet transition. The bill today was a compromise of a previous bill that would have included a GAO report. ICANN president Fadi Chehade said the group would likely be able to give the government a transition proposal by the end of the year. He recently told Reuters he believes the whole process could be finished before the 2016 elections.

ICANN Could Be Privatized by a finish of a year - PCTechMag.com wrote an article that discussed ICANN being on its own by the end of the year. Fadi Chehade gave comments on Thursday that all the parts were in place for this to happen.
