Does something siphon about This.Sucks? - Vox Populi helped This.sucks get off the ground. Is there more to it than that? Site design brought to you by Vox Populi.A couple weeks ago, a new company popped up on the scene called This.Sucks. The business model is remarkably similar to one that .Sucks registry Vox Populi hoped would be created, offering .sucks domain names to users at a reduced annual price (many for free) in return for using a specialized platform. It’s so similar, in fact, that some have questioned if Vox Populi is behind ... read more ...

This week's new TLDs: .Sucks and .Markets - .Sucks hits general availability and the company that spent $4.7 million for a .com launches a new top level domain name. Canada responds to ICANN about .Sucks - Move along, now… John Knubley, Deputy Minister of Industry Canada, has responded (pdf) to the letter ICANN sent to both the U.S. FTC and Canada regarding the .sucks domain name. Knubley basically states that this is not a matter for the government, and that if intellectual property rights holders think a .sucks domain infringes their mark, they already know what to do about it: Canada’s laws provide comprehensive protections for all Canadians. Quick Poll: How Many Sunrise Domain Registrations Will .Sucks Get? - The new gTLD .Sucks has been in the news for a few months since announcing its pricing plan which place a suggested retail price of up to $2,499 for trademark holders. ICANN claimed .sucks domains were being sold to trademark owners in a “predatory” manner, and took the unprecedented step of asking the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) if it was legal. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has responded to ICANN’s request that it investigate the practices of top level domain name registry Vox Populi over its rollout of the .sucks domain name. I’d summarize its response as: “yeah, we told you this would happen with your rollout of new TLDs”. Brands blank a symbol with .Sucks defensive registrations - Knee-jerk reaction doesn’t make sense and leaves companies vulnerable. I’m not a fan of .sucks business model. I’m not a fan of charging big brands a premium to protect their brands with the veiled threat of someone creating a gripe site against the company. At the same time, I’m a bit flummoxed at the knee-jerk reaction some companies are taking with .sucks compared to other domains. They’re paying thousands of dollars to protect their brand.sucks domain name, but leaving many other potential ... read more ...

This one striking threatens to derail swell in a new TLD program - “See, we told you this whole thing is a shakedown.” This one graphic below, as spotted by Michael Berkens earlier today and published on Vox Populi’s website, threatens to set the forward momentum of the new TLD program back quite a bit: (click here for full size) Any ground the Intellectual Property Constituency was going to give in its ongoing requests to ICANN. Donuts also relates for .sucks — here’s the list of 307 applications - A fight breaks out over .sucks top level domain. Donuts, Inc. is the biggest applicant for new top level domains.
