Google Steps Up Domain Name Arbitration Cases -
Google steps up domain trademark enforcement for its brands.
After many years of using domain arbitration as the last resort for picking up trademark domains, Google has gotten involved in the domain arbitration process in a big way this year. Either it is changing its trademark domain recapturing process or the number of AWOL trademark registrants is on the rise.
When Google filed a case for GoogleAdwords.com last year, my question to Google was ‘what took you ... read more ...

Google Adwords’ Ebay Problem -
Google Adwords making online advertising easier for local businesses.
Google Adwords is now testing a simple, flat rate advertising option for local businesses. Local businesses pay a flat monthly fee for their ads instead of dealing with keyword auctions.
Why? Google Adwords is complicated if you’re not an experienced user. And many small business owners aren’t experienced Adwords users, let alone experienced internet users. Here’s a quote from Google ... read more ...

Google: We Don’t Use Keywords Meta Tag -
Don’t bother with keywords meta tag, and focus description tag on what makes users click.
Spending time stuffing the keyword meta tags for your web page? Don’t bother.
That’s the official word from Google, which says it doesn’t consider what you put in your keywords meta tag at all. You may as well leave it empty. The company hasn’t used the keywords meta tag for many years because it was often abused.
For a while people have suggested that the keywords ... read more ...

Adsense as a Platform and What it Means for Publishers -
Google Adsense shows off its platform.
Google Adsense is not an ad network. It’s an advertising platform, and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is taking steps to open it up.
Adsense is taking its next step to opening up the platform by allowing other display advertising companies to place ads on Adsense Publishers’ sites.
For example, Google may be able to offer you a $1 CPM on display ads on your site, while another ad network can offer $2. The other ad network’s ... read more ...

Go Straight to Google for SEO Truths -
Matt Cutt’s video series is worth watching.
There are a lot of half truths in the search engine optimization industry. So it’s refreshing to get an inside take from Google’s traveling search guru, Matt Cutts. I recommend watching his video series on YouTube.
As you know, I don’t usually recommend watching videos. But Cutts “cuts” to the chase (sorry, couldn’t help myself), answering the question in the first 30 seconds of each clip and then explaining ... read more ...

Publisher Who Sued Google Adsense Loses Appeal -
Man who originally won small claim against Google loses appeal.
Aaron Greenspan won a small claims court case against Google earlier this year. Google had canceled his Adsense account without providing a reason. The judge ruled that it can’t cancel accounts for any reason at all, and awarded Greenspan $761. Greenspan wrote an article for Huffington Post detailing the matter, which gained national attention. Google and appealed the case, which it won.

Delay in revenue stats hits major domain name parking companies.
A domain name parking stats delay from Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) has hit a number of domain name parking companies, preventing them from providing final parking stats to customers for the past few days. Yahoo is one of the biggest domain name advertising feed providers.
The outage appears to have started late last week when parking companies started to notify customers of stats delays (or simply not update ... read more ...

Think Twice Before Registering NetBook Domain Names -
Popular technology gizmo is a trademarked term.
Savvy domainers jump on trends and register (or buy) popular new terms before they go mainstream. One term that has jumped into tech talk in earnest over the past year is “netbook”. Netbooks are essentially small and cheap laptops that travel well.
This category of laptops is all the rage, and major manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon advertising their latest netbooks.

Critiquing DOMAINfest Global 2009 -
As the curtain comes down, here’s a look back at last week’s conference in Los Angeles.
Oversee.net’s DOMAINfest Global 2009 was an excellent conference. Now that I’ve had time to relax and reflect on last week, I’d say the conference deserves five stars. Of course, there’s always room for improvement.
The Good

The Google Squeeze: How Google’s Black Box Affects Partners’ Revenue -
Google’s black box of ad pricing makes it impossible to understand if partners are getting a fair share.
When Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) offered a “direct to consumer” domain parking option last month, many cheered. “Finally, we can cut out the middleman!” they exclaimed. But others worried about potential downsides. Specifically, domain owners realized that they have little bargaining power with Google compared to parking companies that aggregate significant ... read more ...

Company files patent for allowing searches to be conducted in the address bar.
Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has filed for a patent to allow users to enter either search terms and domain names into a search box (such as an address bar), and having the computer figure out if the search term was meant to be a specific domain name or web site.

Google Partners Question Company’s Domain Parking Decision -
Google’s Adsense for Domains partners question Google’s moves.
In business lingo it’s called a channel conflict.
Imagine times were still good in auto sales and you wanted to start a Cadillac dealership. You paid Cadillac a hefty franchise fee, spent several million dollars building a showroom, and then bought a couple hundred cars as inventory.
Then one day Cadillac contacted you and said, “Thanks for all of your help. We’ve decided we’ll begin selling ... read more ...

How “Google Direct” May Hurt You in a Long Run -
Google Adsense for Domains’ mass-market approach will strain domain name industry.
Almost all of us were surprised today when Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said it was opening up its Adsense for Domains program. It used to offer domain advertising relationships only to people with massive traffic, then it shut down the application process completely, and now it’s offering it up to anyone with a domain. From talking to a couple sources, it sounds like Google partners ... read more ...
Microsoft Could Use Domain Channel to Get Leg Up in Search -
Is Microsoft looking to buy into the domain market? It could be a winning strategy.
You may have read a few rumors lately that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) may be getting into the domain name business.

Would Microsoft be so bold as to buy up hundreds of thousands of generic ... read more ...

Google Offers Domain Parking Direct to Publishers [UPDATED] -
Google lets customers bypass DomainSponsor, Sedo, and other domain parking companies.
[See update at bottom with latest information.] In a surprising move, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is now offering Adsense publishers the opportunity to park their domains directly with Google, rather than using a second-tier provider such as DomainSponsor or Sedo. Domain Name News caught on to this official Google post earlier today.

Latest VeriSign report blames Google Adsense weakness for slowing domain registration growth rates.
New domain name registrations are slowing, and VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN) says Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) may be to blame.
About 11.5 million new domain names were registered in the third quarter of this year, VeriSign reported in this month’s Domain Name Industry Brief (pdf). That’s a 2% decline from the previous quarter as well as over Q3 of 2007. When you look only ... read more ...

Get Ready for a Google Squeeze -
Google is facing up to difficult times. Get ready for lower revenue shares.
A few years ago I read an article with a quote from a Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) human resources executive. He was commenting on the company’s lavish perks and how they were unique to Google. When the reporter pointed out that many companies have offered similar perks, the executive responded something like, “Yes, but the difference is we won’t cut our perks when times are tough.”

Google Wins Yahoo Advertising Battle -
Regardless of outcome, Google has won.
You may have read yesterday evening that the Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) advertising deal may not go through, thanks to the U.S. government getting involved.
Bad new for the companies? Not for Google, which played this perfectly.
You see, if Google got the deal then it would have an ad deal with Yahoo that would help fill its coffers while rendering Yahoo’s advertising platform less valuable. Yahoo advertisers ... read more ...

Life Without Yahoo -
A Google-only world won’t be pretty.
The writing is on the wall. Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) has been floundering for years, and its market share keeps slipping to Google (NASDAQ: GOOG).
The two companies’ advertising agreement, whereby Yahoo will show ads on behalf of Google, will slowly erode Yahoo’s advertiser base. If the deal is approved by regulators, Yahoo will eventually cease to be a relevant factor in the pay-per-click marketing world.
That doesn’t leave ... read more ...

Ad sharing deal postponed, but deal wouldn’t have immediate effect on domain names anyway.
Over the weekend Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) announced a delay to their planned online advertising sharing agreement to give the U.S. government more time to review the deal.
Although Google and Yahoo provide the bulk of pay-per-click revenue to domain name owners, this deal would have little impact on paid domain name parking in the short run. The pact ... read more ...

DomainSponsor Speaks Common Sense -
Domain parking company speaks out in favor of ad feed provider changes.
In its latest newsletter to clients, DomainSponsor discusses changes at its ad provider (Google). As you may know, Google has been “cleaning up” the domain channel (Google’s words, not mine). This means focusing on quality traffic and cutting (or discounting) the rest. So far I’ve seen a lot of domain parking companies nod grudgingly about how this is necessary for the long term of ... read more ...
