DNW’s new TLD roundup: a good, a bad and a funny -
From brands to portfolio players, here’s a look at what we know so far.
The “big reveal” of who applied for what top level domains isn’t until June 13. But that didn’t stop a lot of companies from making their own announcements over the 36 hours since the application window closed.
Here’s my roundup and analysis:
Google
Google announced four domains it is applying for, but AdAge reports the company is applying for upwards of 50 domain names.

Google wants to obvious associated links functionality -
Lookout, YARPP.
Are you a blogger that uses Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP)? There are a lot of similar plugins (hence the funny name).
But Google apparently thinks it’s novel, as the company has filed a patent application (pdf) for precisely this.
United States patent application 20120109932, titled “Related Links”, covers the process of identifying keywords within an article and then displaying related articles (or searches) based on those keywords.

Google tweaks algorithm to flog parked domains out of the index -
Hi,
@ Arrgo
Frank does not need or rely Google search results for the success of “Internet Traffic”.
So, you will be ‘hoping’ for a very long time…IMO
____
@RED
This discussion is not just about domain parking pages’ getting ranked in Google.
Even, going back to the boom of domain parking days, from 2004 – 2008, very few or any domain parking pages ranked high or at all in Google.

The problem with Google is that they want it both ways.
They do not want the “SOPA/Protect ... read more ...

Google Wants to Take Down Goggle.com Web Site -
Google goes after another “survey” site.
Google has filed a complaint with National Arbitration forum to get a hold of Goggle.com, Goggle.net, and Goggle.org.
While the domain names could be considered “generic” for the term Google, it’s the use of the domain names that has the company up in arms.
Similar to another recent complaint over YouTube.ph, these domains forward to a survey page that then entices users to complete a number of offers.

Google Gets XXX Domain Name* -
Company gets a triple xxx domain name — but I’m not talking about the top level domain.
Google has gotten its hands on GoogleXXX — but not Google.xxx (yet).
The company was awarded GoogleXXX.com in a World Intellectual Property Forum ruling just handed down.
This got me thinking: with the .xxx top level domain name coming out, will it lead to more xxx typos?
One type of domain companies should consider registering is just like what Google just got — trademarkxxx.com. ... read more ...

Google to Listen In? Company Buys Listen.in -
Company acquires Listen.in domain name.
Google has made a curious domain acquisition — Listen.in.
Technically it’s an Indian country code domain name, so perhaps we should just ignore the obvious phrase “Listen In”.
But it’s more fun if you don’t ignore it.
What’s Google up to? The company does have a product called Google Listen that’s in Google Labs. Oh, and there were those apparent plans to “listen in” to your computing environment.

Could Google Be Getting Into a SSL Certificate Business? -
Company could dominate by offering in-search seals.
Earlier this week Google registered the domain name GoogleCert.com. The company could have many uses for this domain name, but one possibility is SSL certificates.
This got me thinking — Google is the perfect player to capitalize on SSL certificates as well as various “trust” seals, which could help the company monetize its organic listings.
There’s no shortage of companies offering SSL certificates and ... read more ...

How To Determine if Google’s Algorithm Changes are Aimed during You -
A handy guide to determine if Google is gunning for you.
Last week Google announced some changes to its algorithm that affect a whopping 12% of search results.
The target?
“low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful”

Can’t Spell Boutiques? Google (Sort of) Has You Covered. -
Boutiques.com is hard to spell, and there are plenty of typos of the generic domain.
Do you have trouble spelling the word “Boutiques”? You’re not the only one.
That’s one of the challenges with Google’s new Boutiques.com store. So the company is trying to buy up a handful of typos of the generic term.
For example, it bought botique.com from Frank Schilling’s Name Administration earlier this year. It also picked up butique.com and boutiqe.com.

With Google Instant Search, GoDaddy is More Popular than God -
Google changes could be important. And I really mean it this time.
There have been plenty of times where pundits have said changes at Google would turn the web on its head. They (and I) have been wrong.
But this time may be different.
When you start thinking about the implications of Instant Search your head starts to spin. Just think about it from the advertising perspective. Efficient Frontier did, and my head is spinning. Think about how many untargeted impressions ... read more ...

Google May Change Domain Parking Requirements -
DNS parking may be required in the future.
A few days ago Sedo informed its customers that its primary advertising provider (read: Google) may change the way it allows domains to be parked. URL forwarding will be out and all domains will need to be parked using DNS. This change has been rumored for a while and likely has to do with tighter control and transparency for parked domains, as well as changes to how parked ads are served technically.

ccTLD Most Important Factor in Google Location Determination -
Targeted a specific country? Get your ccTLD.
It’s no secret that Google uses several factors to determine where a web site is “located” and thus determine its relevance to each individual searcher. But there has been a lot of debate about which factors are most important.
The two I hear mostly commonly are if the domain has a particular country code domain name and where the web host is.
Now Google search-spam czar Matt Cutts has laid it out on the table. ... read more ...

Google trying new ad formats — could they land on a parked domain near you?
During the past two quarters Google has been rolling out a number of new ad formats for search ads on Google.com. On yesterday’s investor conference call, the company explained a few of them.

How Long Until China Confiscates Google.Cn Domain Name? -
The Google.cn domain name is in jeopardy.
If there’s one lesson learned about country code domain names, it’s that you have little protection as a domain registrant. With Google announcing that it will stop censoring its Google.cn search results, it is basically asking for the Chinese government to shut it down.
China can take a number of measures to block access to Google in China. One of the simplest steps is to just confiscate the Google.cn domain name. ... read more ...

Google’s Brilliant Move: Not Buying NexusOne.com Domain Name -
By not buying NexusOne.com, Google reinforces the power of Google search over direct navigation.
Over the past few days I’ve read numerous stories by my peers suggesting that Google messed up by not registering the NexusOne.com domain name prior to launching its new phone initiative. My initial reaction was the same. But I quickly changed my mind: not acquiring the domain name was actually a smart move. Brilliant.
