$100k Go Daddy Commercial Winner Pulled Ad Together in 19 Days -
Team pulls together winning TV commercial in 19 days.
19 days.
That’s how much time the winners of Go Daddy’s TV commercial contest had to pull it all together once they heard about the domain name registrar’s contest.
But for producer Jessie Ottolini, director Francis De La Torre, and writer Lisa Waugh, it was worth the stress — they’re now a hundred thousand dollars richer and have been pushed onto the national television commercial stage almost overnight.

Beware GoDaddy Whois Update Phishing Scheme -
Scam makes its rounds with a new phishing URL.
[Updated: Go Daddy has successfully shut down the phishing site. But the offender will surely just set up another. So here are a couple points from Go Daddy:
-Official Go Daddy e-mails will always address you by name, unlike those from phishers (who do not know this information).
-Customers are also reminded never to provide credentials to an unsecure website. Always make sure the web address starts with “https:†... read more ...

Go Daddy User Generated Ads Hit a Mark -
Commercials show what Go Daddy actually does. That’s refreshing.
Last month I lamented that most of the submissions to Go Daddy’s commercial contest followed the same-old GoDaddy script. Now that the ten finalists have been selected, I’ve changed my mind.
Sure, most of the finalist commercials use some sort of sex appeal, but the majority of the message is on how Go Daddy can help you get online. The visuals actually make you pay attention to the idea of ... read more ...

GoDaddy has filed a number of trademarks in the past couple months — some of which may foreshadow new services from the company.
First, the company filed a pair of trademark applications for its new slogan “Domains, websites, and everything* in between”. The company started using the new slogan back in March according to the applications. A few days later it filed an application for the graphic version ... read more ...

Case isn’t new, just moved closer to Go Daddy headquarters.
CourthouseNews.com is reporting that a class action lawsuit has been filed against Go Daddy for showing pay-per-click ads on registrant’s “coming soon” pages.
This actually isn’t a new case and the latest development actually represents a win for Go Daddy.

Foursquare Admits Its Expired Domain Name Mistake -
Popular location based social networking company forgets to renew its domain name.
Kudos to social networking site Foursquare, which freely admitted this morning on Twitter that it messed up and didn’t renew its domain name.
Based on the language of the tweet, it appears that Foursquare may have had an old credit card on file with domain name registrar GoDaddy. Or perhaps its email address in whois at master@foursquare.com no longer worked.

.Cn Pullout is a Business Decision, Not Political [Updated] -
Public misunderstands reasons for .cn pullout.
[Update: see comments from Go Daddy Group Executive Vice-President and General Counsel Christine Jones.] I really don’t think Go Daddy was trying to pull off a publicity stunt yesterday with its testimony before a Congressional Commission yesterday. GoDaddy announced it was no longer offering China’s .cn domain name, and clearly laid out the hassle it would have to undertake to continue offering the domain name.
But ... read more ...

The results show a handful of newer companies are innovating in the selling process — and attracting attention from domainers.
The top response in this year’s Domain Name Wire survey (by a long shot) this year was Sedo. After that are three companies, two of which are smaller upstarts: Rick Latona and Bido.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, a better partnership between domainers and the world’s biggest registrar would benefit the industry.
GoDaddy is the most loved domain name registrar. Ironically, it’s probably the most hated registrar at the same time.
Respondents to DNW’s annual survey have selected GoDaddy.com as the best registrar for five years running. But it’s also true that a lot of domainers avoid the registrar like the plague.
It would be great if GoDaddy ... read more ...

GoDaddy Forced to Pull Another SuperBowl Commercial -
Another commercial problem for Go Daddy.
There’s more controversy with GoDaddy’s Super Bowl commercials, but this time it actually may not have been planned.
The company planned to air an ad called “movies” during Sunday’s game. The ad showed Danica Patrick performing a couple scenes from iconic movies. But apparently GoDaddy ran into licensing problems with some of the movie studios with scenes portrayed in the commercial. So the company yanked the commercial.
Instead, ... read more ...

GoDaddy Manages to Get SuperBowl Ad Banned -
One ad banned, but others approved.
Phew, that was a close call. GoDaddy’s media strategy around Super Bowl ads was almost thrown into the air as CBS approved some of its risque ads. Without a banned or censored ad, that would mean less pre-game media coverage.
But thanks to “Lola”, a flamboyant ex-football player turned fashion designer, GoDaddy can live another day. The ad is somewhat humorous, in typical GoDaddy fashion.
Unlike prior years, GoDaddy didn’t ... read more ...

Silicon Alley Insider Values GoDaddy during $1.4 Billion, Oversee.net during $1 Billion -
A number of domain name companies land on valuable start up lists. But SAI didn’t do its homework.
Silicon Alley Insider has released its latest list of the world’s most valuable startups, which includes a number of domain name companies. But I question the validity of some of its assumptions because of some glaring errors, such as saying that Oversee.net hasn’t taken any outside funding.
