DomainConvergence to Host Auction — With a Twist - Conference will include auction managed by Fusu. DomainConvergence, a new domain conference coming to Canada October 6-8, will include a live and online domain name auction managed by Fusu. So what’s the twist? People selling domains in the auction will have to pay 1% of the reserve price up front. The goal is to encourage low reserves. I’m a big fan of this market-based approach to ensuring high quality domains are submitted at reasonable reserves. It works ... read more ...

How Monte Cahn & Crew Pulled It Off - $3 million auction was well executed. If anyone was scared about how yesterday’s live domain auction at TRAFFIC would go, their fears dissipated about 30 minutes into the auction. Domains were selling and bidding was intense. Sure, the final tally of $3 million ($4 million for all auctions this week) was much less than the $10 million last year, but it’s a coup given what’s going on in the economy. So how did Monte Cahn and his crew at Moniker pull it off? 1. ... read more ...

Backdrop for this Week’s Domain Auctions is Shaky - This week’s onslaught of domain auctions couldn’t have come at a more unstable time. Call it the week of domain name auctions: two from Moniker, plus auctions from Rick Latona Auctions, Aftermarket.com, and Sedo. Also call it the week of economic uncertainty. Yesterday afternoon the backdrop for the Aftermarket.com auction was knowledge that President Bush was going to address the nation about the financial crisis just a few hours later. In that speech, he ... read more ...

Stars May Align for Moniker Domain Name Auction during 3PM Today - Outlook getting rosier by the minute for Moniker Auction. [Update: FinancialAid.com sells for $800,000.] Earlier today I wrote about how financial uncertainty is peaking and this has weighed down on the live domain name auctions this week. I also said that Moniker’s timeslot — 3 PM EDT today — may end up being a very lucky happenstance. It’s looking more that way. Democrats and Republicans have apparently come up with a bailout plan and the stock market ... read more ...

Rick Latona Domain Name Auction Off to Screaming Start - Rick Latona’s highly anticipated auction takes place in New York today. Update: Here are the results. Rick Latona Auctions, LLC’s first live auction will take place at the TRAFFIC conference in Brooklyn today. The auction goes live at 1:30 PM EDT today. Last night Moniker held the first of its two auctions, which was modestly successful but certainly didn’t quell fears about how much money people have to invest in domains right now. But today the story will ... read more ...

Domain Auctions aren’t for End Users. Get Over It. - Domain name auctions have never been, and will never be, for end users. I’ve read a lot of complaints over the past week about how late the domain auction houses have released their auction lists for this week’s TRAFFIC show in NYC. That’s a fair complaint. Domain lists should be released weeks, not days, before an auction. But the main complaint I hear is that by releasing the lists so late, it makes it impossible to market the domains to end users. This ... read more ...

Bankrupt Domains go to Auction Block - Auction company to sell trademarks and domains related to failed online bank, doctor’s web site. IP Auctions, Inc., is getting ready to auction off the NetBank.com domain name and associated trademarks. The defunct online bank was one of the more popular online banks in its heyday until the feds had to step in and takeover. IP Auctions, Inc. had the asset listed on its web site but it is no longer there. A cache of the company’s web site shows the auction was ... read more ...

How to Edit Domain Submissions to TrafficZ Auction - If you submitted domains to the TrafficZ/Aftermarket.com auction at TRAFFIC, here’s how to add descriptions to each of your domains. If you’ve already submitted domains to the TrafficZ auction taking place at TRAFFIC next month in New York, you should consider adding descriptions to each of your domains. How To: Submit Domains to TrafficZ Auction - With the exception of some branding issues, submission process is easy. I just finished submitting a half dozen domains to TrafficZ’s first live auction to be held at the TRAFFIC conference next month in Brooklyn. The submission process is done completely via a web based system and is easy to follow. In fact, the only confusion you might encounter is branding. You’ll probably think of this auction as the TrafficZ auction. TrafficZ is part of Thought Convergence. ... read more ...

.Me Domain Name Auctions to Last a Loooong Time - Bids in final 24 hours extend auctions by 24 hours. I haven’t been paying much attention to the .me domain name auctions, but Michael Berkens has. Some of the domains are being bid up rather high, including Insure.me (135 bids, $26,130), Hug.me (74 bids, $13,016), Secure.me (93 bids, $7,540) and Portland.me (230 bids, $6,151). When will the auctions end? It could be a very, very long time before we find out. You see, the .me auctions get extended if there are ... read more ...

How to Solve Auction Submission Bias with Financial Incentives - Solving Submission Bias with Financial Incentives Long time users of Craigslist bemoan that there’s so much spam on the site. Google for “craigslist submitter” and you’ll see ads for software that will automatically submit ads to Craigslist every few minutes. But there’s a simple solution to this problem: if Craigslist charged 25 cents per ad submission, the volume of spam would drop overnight but the volume of legitimate submissions would hardly change. When ... read more ...

Luxury.net Luxurious during $40,000 - A look at ongoing auctions including Luxury.net. An auction for Luxury.net is currently 25,000 EUR at Sedo, or approximately $40,000 USD. The auction ends July 19. This is a luxurious price for a .net domain name, so the name is fitting. Other Sedo auctions closing this week include PureCasino.com at $13,000, zfz.com at $7,000, and ljl.com at $6,600. There are a handful of auctions at Sedo right now that currently have good prices and might make good investments: Send.us ... read more ...

Moniker’s Money-Losing Auction - Nobody won during Saturday’s live auction. If you’re bummed about the results of Saturday’s live GeoDomain auction, which took in about $280,000, think about how Moniker feels. This live auction was a money loser for the company. Moniker’s gross cut from the live auction will be about $42,000. Then they have to pay a cut to Associated Cities (assumption), pay the auctioneer, pay for all of its staff’s travel to Chicago, the time it took organizing the ... read more ...

Overheard during GeoDomain Expo: TrafficZ, Moniker Auction - A summary of news coming out of the GeoDomain Expo in Chicago so far. I’ve been at the GeoDomain Expo in Chicago for about 24 hours now and it’s been a fast-paced event. Here’s a summary of what’s been going on: There are about 200 people at the conference, far surpassing previous GeoDomain Expos. As one person commented to me on the trolley ride to the TrafficZ party last night, “The mood here is far more upbeat than at regular domain conferences.” ... read more ...

Is Bido.com an Early Success? You Betcha. - Plenty of Naysayers, but Bido is making an impact. If you read domain name message boards you probably think domain name auction site Bido is a failure. I beg to differ. People keep pointing to the “bargains” people are getting on the site. Bargains? What bargains? These same people are watching the auctions, so why aren’t they bidding if these are such great deals? With rare exception, it’s hard to get a bargain on mid-market domains in a domain auction ... read more ...

Zimbabwe.com: An Opportunity to Do Good - Auction at GeoDomain Expo provides opportunity to shed light on atrocities. The 2008 GeoDomain Expo kicks off Thursday night in Chicago. Moniker will hold a live auction Saturday evening with geo gems such as SanMateo.com and Yemen.com. But one domain draws special attention and an opportunity for a wealthy domain investor: Zimbabwe.com. I’m not talking about an opportunity to make a lot of money. After all, the domain has a reserve of over $500,000 (after ... read more ...

Moniker Streamlines Auction Submission Process - No more e-mailing spreadsheets; Moniker enables online auction submissions. Anyone who has submitted a domain name to Moniker for inclusion in its auctions knows how much of a pain it can be. Israel.com Has NOT Sold - Erroneous reports suggested domain name sold over the weekend. A number of erroneous reports hit the wire this morning that Israel.com sold for $5.88 million. I just got off the phone with Moniker’s CEO Monte Cahn and he told me these reports were incorrect and the domain name is still for sale. Apparently the rumors started when a publication, perhaps “TheMarker” or Haaretz, saw the reserve price in the Moniker silent auction and assumed that was a winning ... read more ...

2008 GeoDomain Expo Coming to Chicago - Conference for “hot” sector of domain names returns in July. It seems like everywhere you look, domainers are talking about “Geo” domains. Those in the geo space will tell you it’s been hot since the beginning, but they probably enjoy finally getting the respect they deserve. And that will be on display at this year’s GeoDomain Expo in Chicago July 11-12 at W Chicago – City Center. (There is a cocktail party the evening of July 10.) I’ve decided ... read more ...

Final Thoughts on TRAFFIC East - A look back at the latest TRAFFIC domain name show. I’ve read a few blog posts this weekend from people giving their opinion on the TRAFFIC show that just concluded in Orlando. Of course, half of these bloggers weren’t even there, so I don’t know how they can pass judgment on the show. I’m going to give you my thoughts, up to the time I left Friday afternoon during the auction. (After that point my experience went downhill, since a bellman at the Grand Floridian ... read more ...
