Interview with Jarred Cohen of Bido -
New ownership, but a similar formula for Bido.
Social domain auction site Bido is back and under new ownership. There’s a familiar face at the helm, with Jarred Cohen returning as Chief Operating Officer. He’s a busy guy right now, but I was able to steal a few minutes of his time via email for an update:
DNW: Who bought Bido?
Cohen: The Bido software, website, and some other related assets were purchased by Bido.com LLC, a Switzerland company.
DNW: What is ... read more ...

Lessons from Bido -
A look back at two years of Bido.
Now that I’ve had a couple days to mentally process the closing of Bido, it has given me time to reflect on what went wrong.
To be clear, I commend both Sahar and Jarred for creating Bido. They put their heart and money into it, and should be proud of the innovation they brought to the marketplace. I also think we’ll see the platform live on in some incarnation as they are currently liquidating the assets.
So here are my main ... read more ...

Domain Auction Site Bido Closing Down -
Domain name auction site Bido is closing down.
Domain name auction site Bido is closing. The company announced the move on twitter moments ago:
Bido is ceasing operation as of May 5, 2010. All transactions and accounts will be gracefully finalized and closed.
I confirmed the closure with the company. Although representatives would not speak specifically to why they are shutting down the platform, the company must have been losing substantial money. It had been ... read more ...

The Challenges of Creating a Marketplace -
Creating a marketplace is tough, but the rewards are high.
One of the challenges new companies offering domain name services face is that of creating a market. It’s the age old question of the chicken and the egg. Which comes first, the supply or the demand? To get sellers you need buyers and vice versa.
This isn’t limited to domain marketplaces in terms of buying and selling domain names.
Starting a parking company. Consider the typical domain name parking ... read more ...

Survey: Innovation Coming to Domain Sales -
Companies provide innovative twists on domain selling.
Which company is most innovative when it comes to selling domain names in the aftermarket?
The results show a handful of newer companies are innovating in the selling process — and attracting attention from domainers.
The top response in this year’s Domain Name Wire survey (by a long shot) this year was Sedo. After that are three companies, two of which are smaller upstarts: Rick Latona and Bido.

Bido Moves to Silicon Valley, But Domain HQs Remain Elsewhere -
L.A., Seattle, and Florida lead list of major U.S. domain company hubs.
My wife works for a company based in San Francisco, so I often tag along when she heads out there. A year ago I tried to set up meetings with Bay area domain name companies, but then I hit a roadblock: there really aren’t any. I met with the founder of NamePros, got stonewalled by Google (big surprise), and didn’t bother with VeriSign’s Mountain View office.
We’re talking about the center ... read more ...

Bido Changes Up Its Game (Again) -
Bido added a number of new features today.
Credit domain name auction site Bido with constantly tweaking (or overhauling) its site in response to feedback.
Today the company announced a number of new changes:
1. Name your starting price. No more $28 minimum/maximum. A lower minimum will likely result in more votes.
2. Vote for profits. If an auction you vote for goes to auction and sells, you get a cut of Bido’s commission. The goal is to incentivize you to ... read more ...

Bido Releases Transaction Manager -
Bido releases system to manage domain purchases and sales.
Bido’s new transaction manager
When you sell one domain name a day, managing the payment and transfer process can be done manually. When you start selling dozens of domains a day, it gets more complicated.
Bido has released a new buyer and seller transaction system to make its dozens of daily transactions easier. It includes both buyer and seller overviews and the ability to drill down to manage individual ... read more ...

Bido Guarantee Program: It Makes Sense Now -
The missing piece of the puzzle glues it all together.
When domain auction platform Bido announced its “Bido Guarantee Program”, I was a bit confused as to why any buyers would participate. Essentially, buyers would participate in a pre-auction where they could bid for domains. The seller could choose to accept the winning bid in the pre-auction, send the auction to a “real” auction with the pre-auction bid as the starting bid, or walk away.
This didn’t ... read more ...

Rating Bido’s New Features -
Domain auction platform Bido makes more changes.
You have to hand it to Bido. They relentlessly brainstorm, create, and tweak features to make their platform better.
About a month ago Bido starting allowing multiple auctions per day and allowed users to vote on domains for auction. This caused some problems. Namely, a lot of low quality domains are at auction and selling for less than registration fee. Those that do sell would have sold for more if they were the ... read more ...

Test Driving Bido’s New Features -
Bido releases new features on auction platform today.
Social auction platform Bido released several new features today. I logged in this morning to check them out, and I think these changes will help take Bido to the next level in domain name sales. Here are a few of the changes.
1. Comments – Previously, you could only give a ‘thumbs up’ to an expert commentary about a domain name. Now you can leave a full comment, either reaffirming or disagreeing with ... read more ...

Smart Changes Coming to Bido -
Bido is making a couple smart changes to its auction platform in an upcoming release.
First, Bido will start offering multiple auctions per day. It’s unclear how these will take place, but it could be several at the same time or one per hour (or half hour) throughout the day.
Second, expert users will now be able to vote on which domain names will be auctioned off. This is a great way to use crowd sourcing to figure out which domains have the most potential. ... read more ...

Bido Reinstates Reserve Pricing (with a Catch) -
Auction platform allows reserve priced domain listings, but there’s a fee if they don’t sell.
In an effort to establish confidence with sellers and bring more premium inventory to its platform, Bido is allowing sellers to set reserve prices on their domain names.
Part of my prediction was correct – you’ll pay a fee if you list a domain with a reserve that doesn’t sell.
If Bido selects a domain you submit with a reserve, you’ll pay a listing fee of 3% ... read more ...

Changes in Store for Bido Auction Platform -
I predict three major changes at domain auction house Bido.
A week ago I wrote about the lack of high quality domain names for sale at Bido. Others agreed, and Bido co-founder Sahar Sarid chimed in. While Sarid was somewhat coy about planned changes at Bido, he dropped several hints. After reading his comments on Domain Name Wire and his five posts about accurate domain pricing on his blog, here’s what I think is in store for the site:
1. More than one domain ... read more ...

Bido Needs to Improve Domain Quality — Fast -
After $2 auction, platform needs to step up quality fast or users will lose interest.
I love Bido.
There. I said it. Bido is an imaginative auction platform. It’s the first truly social domain auction platform. Stop by the site during auction hour and you can join a discussion. Prior to bidding you can read what other people have said about the domain. It’s fun and engaging.
There’s just one problem: the domains up for auction stink. And I’m not the ... read more ...

Bido Sells FixedLoans.com for $5,459 -
Famed domain name sells for $5,459.
The domain name that brought down Bido.com — FixedLoans.com — has helped the auction service get back on the radar. Just moments ago the domain name sold for $5,459.
FixedLoans.com attracted a lot of attention in August of last year, and the auction eventually caused Bido’s servers to crash. The company decided to take some time off to make the platform more scalable. In previous auctions bidding topped $5,000 before crashing. ... read more ...

It’s Baaaaaack! Bido.com Relaunches Today -
Domain name auction platform relaunches after long hiatus.
Remember Bido? Yeah, I know, it’s been a long time. The once a day domain name auction house launched to much buzz only to be sidelined by technical snafus. After a long (and I mean long) wait, Bido finally rears its head again today.
When you log into Bido, you won’t notice a bunch of new features. Most of the work has been on the back end. But there are some neat twists, all designed to get the ... read more ...

Rick Latona Auction to Be Simulcast on Web; Other Updates -
Auction at TRAFFIC conference will allow for remote bidding.
Rick Latona announced that his auction at next month’s TRAFFIC conference will be simulcast on the web. The auction will use Proxibid, which Latona calls the “biggest and best online auction company in the business.”

Bido.com Crashes Again -
Bido crashes during second auction for FixedLoans.com.
Sahar Sarid’s blog posts tell it all. Yesterday his post was titled “Bido is Down, But Not For Long!”. Today’s post: “Bido Auctions No More (For Now)“.
For the second straight day, Bido crashed during the auction for FixedLoans.com. I had reasonable success logging in and watching the auction for the first 50 minutes, but then I just got a blank screen after that.

Bido: FixedLoans.com Auction and New Chat Feature -
Domain sold at previous TRAFFIC auction on the block at Bido, Bido Chat in the works.
Bido’s auction on Wednesday will be for FixedLoans.com. This will be an interesting auction to watch because the domain was sold at a TRAFFIC conference in 2006 for $10,000.
Some may view this auction as a test of Bido’s clout in the domain auction business, but it could really go either way. If it sells for more than $10,000 it could be because fixed loans are getting a ... read more ...

5 Ways to Make More Money with Domain Parking -
As domain parking revenue drops, sitting around and complaining won’t do you any good.

Bido.com Sells Dickinson for $12,000 -
Bido has sold its most expensive domain to date.
Upstart domain auction house Bido has sold Dickinson.com for $12,000, a record for the site.
Originally billed as a geo-related domain name, Dickinson.com was listed in the “Family names” category on Bido. I don’t think it’s a particularly strong geo domain given the cities in question, so I agree with this move. The final sales price was in line with my expectations.
