Go Daddy to auction .info “sunrise tentative reallocation” domains -
Auction features domains originally reserved during 2001 sunrise.
Domain name registry Afilias is working with Go daddy to auction off over 100 domain names claimed in the .info sunrise that were later deemed ineligible.
The 106 domain auction runs December 4 through December 14.
The domains were originally requested during the .info sunrise in 2001. This was one of the first ever “sunrise” periods for a top level domain launch that gave trademark holders first ... read more ...

5 Reasons for Brands to Get Their Own New TLD -
By Roland LaPlante
[Roland LaPlante is Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Afilias, a domain name registry services and DNS provider. In this guest article he gives five reasons why a brand might want to get its own top level domain name.]
This week at the 39th international ICANN meeting in Cartagena, the ICANN Board is expected to make a decision on the final rules for applicants of new top-level domains (new TLDs). The opportunities that new ... read more ...

.Info Has Banner Year in 2010 -
Registered base of .info domain names spikes in 2010.
2010 isn’t over yet, but .info registry Afilias has released its 2010 .Info Annual Report (pdf). (This is likely to coincide with the ICANN meeting in Colombia and media attention around new TLDs.)
Afilias bills .info as the first “new TLD”, and it has easily outpaced its rivals in terms of registrations. At the end of September .info had 6.8 million domain name registrations. Compared to recent years, ... read more ...

Tomorrow is a Big Day for New Top Level Domain Names -
Big issue on the table at ICANN retreat.
In about 24 hours the ICANN Board of Directors will kick off a retreat. It’s not an official board meeting, but it’s anticipated that the two day retreat will finalize an important issue: registry/registrar separation.
A lot is at stake in this decision. Millions of dollars for the stakeholders.
Until now a registry hasn’t been able to own a registrar and (technically) vice-versa. Afilias is owned by a number of registrars, ... read more ...

ICANN Green Lights 1 and 2 Letter .Info Domain Names -
Here comes 1.info.
The ICANN Board approved a resolution granting Afilias the right to register one and two character .info domain names during its Board meeting last Thursday.
.Info registry Afilias made the request in February. It plans to model the distribution of the short domain names similar to how Neustar handled the release of one and two character .biz domain names:
1. Requests for Proposal, where anyone can submit a proposal for developing a particular ... read more ...

Afilias Tells New TLD Applicants to Limit Their Expectations -
How many registrations should a new TLD expect?
A call for new top level domain name applicants to be realistic about how many domains they can sell is coming from an unlikely source: domain name registry Afilias.
In a blog post today, Afilias points out that history tells us new TLDs don’t get substantial registrations:
…Well, here we are in 2010 and the industry has now grown to over 190 million domain names. If you think it was because of new TLDs, you’d ... read more ...

ICANN Board Drops Bomb on Registrars Hoping to Launch New TLDs -
Board opts for separation of registrars and registries for new top level domain names.
[Update: Minutes from board meeting emphasize pending plan from GNSO.] ICANN’s board resolved today that there will be “strict separation of entities offering registry services and those acting as registrars. No co-ownership will be allowed.”
However, the board left the possibility open for compromise, stating that if the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) comes ... read more ...

One and Two Character .Info Domain Names on a Way -
X.info will be available soon.
.Info registry Afilias is asking ICANN to approve a plan to offer one and two character .info domain names for registration. As with other newer gTLDs, ICANN originally reserved all one and two character domains from being registered.
Afilias is modeling its plan after Neustar’s launch of one and two character .biz domain names. There will be a three step process:
1. Requests for Proposal, where anyone can submit a proposal for ... read more ...

Mortgage.info for $250? There’s a Small Catch. -
Afilias release .info domain names.
.Info registry Afilias is letting go of a number of premium domains that were originally reserved under its sunrise period. People claimed bogus rights to domains such as mortgage.info, miami.info, and Jesus.info. Now these domain names can be yours — if you have a good plan to develop them.
Afilias is accepting applications for each of the domains, and will award domain names to applicants who have a solid plan to develop the ... read more ...

Domain Registries Clarify Stance on Registry-Registrar Separation -
Afilias, PIR, and Neustar explain their position on a critical change to the domain name sales channel.
Domain registries have a lot to lose if registry/registrar separation ends with the introduction of new top level domain names. Representatives of several registries, including Afilias, Public Interest Registry, and Neustar, have sent a letter (pdf) to ICANN’s board and CEO that says ICANN is misstating the registry constituency’s position on registry/registrar ... read more ...

Domain Name News Bytes for Wednesday, Jul 22 -
A brief look at domain name news.
.cm, .info, and other stories worth reading.
Is the .cm landrush a blight on domainers? Chad Kettner thinks so. I tend to agree. Rightly or wrongly, it’s easy for the media to point to major domain name companies supporting the .cm landrush and saying “see, they’re all cybersquatters”. I also question the amount of .cm typo traffic. Personally, I think .co is much more common. You also wonder if parking ad feed providers ... read more ...

.Me during 250,000: What’s Next? -
250,000 .me domain names have been registered. Here’s what it means.
250,000 .me domain names have been registered since its relaunch earlier this year. I draw two conclusions from this.
First, it shows the power a registrar has in pushing a domain. .Me is run by a partnership between Afilias and GoDaddy. GoDaddy has aggressively pushed the domain and dissed others at the same time. (Bob Parsons stopped using BobParsons.tv and switched to BobParsons.me). ... read more ...

Tucows Sells Afilias Stake for $7.4 Million -
Registrar continues to divest of non-core assets.
Domain registrar Tucows has sold its stake in domain name registry Afilias for $7.4 million. Tucows owned 7.38% of Afilias, which pegs a valuation on the registry of about $100 million. However, the payments to Tucows will be spread across the next 13 months with $3.2 million today; $2.1 million in June 2009; and $2.1 million in December 2009.
Tucows has already sold off its web hosting business and recently launched ... read more ...

Afilias Accidentally Deletes .Info Domains from RGP -
Registry for .info takes back domains mistakenly dropped.
.Info registry Afilias accidentally deleted some of the domain names that were in the redemption grace period this past weekend. Some of the domains were snapped up by new registrants and from backorders, but those people had the domains rescinded.
Afilias released the following statement to Domain Name Wire:
“This weekend a limited number of names were inadvertantly released from RGP. Afilias has rescinded ... read more ...

GoDaddy Playing Hardball with NeuStar? -
Pricing at GoDaddy for NeuStar’s .us and .biz domains is oddly high.
In February I wrote about GoDaddy’s price increase for .biz domain names. The registrar was charging $14.99 for .biz domain names, even though its wholesale cost at the registry is about the same as .com domain names (which GoDaddy sells for $9.99). It appeared that GoDaddy was just trying to make some extra profit.
But a couple weeks ago a friend pointed out that I may have missed the boat ... read more ...

.Org Domain Name Prices to Jump 10% -
Public Interest Registry to raise wholesale prices of .org domain names.
Public Interest Registry, the registry for .org domain names, has notified ICANN that it is increasing wholesale prices 10%. The annual wholesale price for .org domain name registrations will be $6.75, slightly below the $6.86 rate that .com domains will jump to later this year.
The rational for the price increase? None. At least none that was disclosed to ICANN. The rational is purely for ... read more ...
