SnapNames Employee Bid in Domain Auctions, Cleanup in Progress - SnapNames employee bid in auctions, but the bigger news is how company is handling it. You’ll probably read a lot today about how a SnapNames employee had been bidding on auctions for the past four years. In case you haven’t heard the story, here’s a brief recap: -Employee opened account in another name and started bidding in 2005 -Participated in about 5% of auctions, mostly between 2005-2007 -S/He won about 1% of the auctions during this period (so about ... read more ...

Friday Domain News Bytes - Quick news updates before the weekend. It’s the Friday before Halloween and there’s a lot of domain news to report. I’ll be taking off early today to go to my daughter’s Halloween school carnival (she’s dressing up as a Flamingo), so here’s a condensed version of all the news that’s fit to print. IDN TLDs are coming! ICANN’s board has approved the fast track IDN country code domain name process. Here’s what you need to know: 1. These are the ... read more ...

In Domain Auctions, Less is More - Offering fewer domains can result in more sales. This month’s SnapNames showcase auction ended with only twelve domain sales for a total of $44,149. That’s a dismal 4% sell through rate. Why did the auction perform so poorly? There are a number of possible reasons, but I think one is that there were too many domains in the auction. Previous SnapNames monthly auctions have had fewer than 100 domains; this one had about 300. Given all of the online auctions ... read more ...

Moniker Trims Silent Auction List for TRAFFIC Auction - Moniker shrinks silent auction, online finance auction ends tomorrow. Responding to complaints about the unwieldy number of domains in its last major silent (extended) domain auction, Moniker has cut the list from about 5,000 to 1,800 for this month’s auction. I’m not sure if the list is small enough even at 1,800, but it’s definitely a move in the right direction. The live auction will feature 187 domains and will take place on Wednesday, October 28. Top ... read more ...

Domain Name News Bytes for Wednesday, Jul 22 - A brief look at domain name news. .cm, .info, and other stories worth reading. Is the .cm landrush a blight on domainers? Chad Kettner thinks so. I tend to agree. Rightly or wrongly, it’s easy for the media to point to major domain name companies supporting the .cm landrush and saying “see, they’re all cybersquatters”. I also question the amount of .cm typo traffic. Personally, I think .co is much more common. You also wonder if parking ad feed providers ... read more ...

How To Play a Expired Domain Game in 2009 - A practical guide to profiting from expired domain names in 2009. Because of the economy and faltering parking revenue, you should expect to see more domain names expiring and dropping in 2009 and 2010. Most of these added drops will be of low or mediocre quality, but some of them will be worth backordering. To new comers, buying expired domains can be somewhat daunting. But in many ways it’s easier now than in the days of many competing services slamming the ... read more ...

Survey: Which Expired Domain Name Service is Best? - Aha! That “novel” wasn’t submitted for some reason! Luckily I saved it before I clicked “submit”. But some editing was lost, so please be forgiving. Here it is, again: +++++ H*ll yes, I will choose Snapnames first over any of the others. Reasons? For Dub-A, I will come out of my normally shy and quiet demeanor, and be uncharacteristically blunt: 1) Snapnames has consistently run a well-managed expiring domain service for at least four years (although they’ve been around ... read more ...

What Should Domain Registrars Do with Expired Domain Names? - Perhaps letting domain registrars do as they please is OK. For the 2009 Domain Name Wire Survey I added a new option for the most important factors when selecting a domain registrar: what they do with expired domains. With all the commotion over what domain registrars do when domains expire (e.g. GoDaddy and Tucows), I wondered if this affected peoples’ decisions about which registrar to use. Apparently not; it was ranked the least important factor when choosing ... read more ...
