Changes in Store for Bido Auction Platform -
I predict three major changes at domain auction house Bido.
A week ago I wrote about the lack of high quality domain names for sale at Bido. Others agreed, and Bido co-founder Sahar Sarid chimed in. While Sarid was somewhat coy about planned changes at Bido, he dropped several hints. After reading his comments on Domain Name Wire and his five posts about accurate domain pricing on his blog, here’s what I think is in store for the site:
1. More than one domain ... read more ...

Country Code Domain Name Forum Launches -
Rick Latona launches ccTLD forum.
Domain name investor Rick Latona has launched a forum dedicated solely to the discussion of country code top level domain names. Fittingly, he bought a premier domain name for the forum: ccTLDs.com.
The forum includes separate sections for each of the major, non-commercialized top level domains (no .tv or .me here). It appears that Latona’s director of marketing Ray Neu (son of TRAFFIC co-founder Howard Neu) will be spearheading ... read more ...

Two Tools to Find Available Domain Names -
HotNameList.com and Domain Pigeon take different approaches to finding available domain names.
It’s still possible to hand register available domain names and make money. You just have to be smart about it. Here’s a look at two tools that can help.
The first is HotNameList.com. The owner of this site contacted me back in October. I responded that I didn’t think his site had anything new or unique. He added some features, including one based on my suggestion, ... read more ...

Domain name parking alternatives vary in approach, but one is a clear favorite.
In light of falling domain parking revenue a number of services have popped up that offer to develop your domain names or monetize domains without pay-per-click ads. For the first time ever, the 2009 Domain Name Wire Survey asked “Which domain parking alternative is best?”
WhyPark, a service that makes it easy to develop web sites and add content, came out on top with 49% of the vote. ... read more ...

It’s Baaaaaack! Bido.com Relaunches Today -
Domain name auction platform relaunches after long hiatus.
Remember Bido? Yeah, I know, it’s been a long time. The once a day domain name auction house launched to much buzz only to be sidelined by technical snafus. After a long (and I mean long) wait, Bido finally rears its head again today.
When you log into Bido, you won’t notice a bunch of new features. Most of the work has been on the back end. But there are some neat twists, all designed to get the ... read more ...

Security Software Every Domain Owner Should Use -
In light of recent security issues, here’s a software program you need to use.
A security breach was discovered last week at domain name parking company NameDrive. After discovering that many domainers were using similar usernames and passwords across multiple domain parking companies, both Sedo and Fabulous sent warning messages to customers.
The scary part is that the hackers likely didn’t care about getting into your domain parking account. It appears they ... read more ...

DNW Interview: Brandon Abbey of Escrow.com -
Escrow.com President Brandon Abbey discusses Escrow.com and the challenges of starting an escrow company.
Big ticket domainers — and even smaller ones who want safe domain transfers — often turn to Escrow.com for domain name escrow services. The company was founded in 1999 by Fidelity National Financial, but has been privately held since May 2004. I’ve met Escrow.com president and managing director Brandon Abbey at a handful of domain name shows, and have ... read more ...

Unique idea drives hundreds of domain aftermarket sales.
It’s been about six months since I first wrote about PushToAuction.com, a service that lists domain names that people are willing to send to an auction on Sedo with a $60 offer.
The service was active for a couple months before Domain Name Wire’s story, and since launch it has helped sell 426 domain names for $126,901. That’s an average of $298.
The value to sellers is clear: list domain names on the ... read more ...

.Tel “Landrush”: What You Need to Know -
Phase one of open registration is now open for .tel.
The first phase of open registration for the new .tel domain name is underway. I’ve been a vocal critic of .tel, even suggesting that the $35 million investment in .tel registry Telnic should be written off as a loss. I don’t want it to fail and hope that time proves me wrong. I just think the odds are stacked against it.
At DOMAINfest last week I talked with Telnic’s Justin Hayward. I’ve talked with ... read more ...
DevHub Builds Your Domain Media Network -
New incarnation of EVOLanding to launch in February.
DevHub, a free platform for rapidly developing web sites, will launch to the public later this month.
Mass developing web sites isn’t easy. DevHub makes it easier, but you shouldn’t expect to be able to just press a button to develop 1,000 domain names. Technically DevHub would allow you to do that, but you won’t get long term search engine traffic. It takes a little elbow grease to realize its true ... read more ...

Critiquing DOMAINfest Global 2009 -
As the curtain comes down, here’s a look back at last week’s conference in Los Angeles.
Oversee.net’s DOMAINfest Global 2009 was an excellent conference. Now that I’ve had time to relax and reflect on last week, I’d say the conference deserves five stars. Of course, there’s always room for improvement.

Circuit City, Linens ‘n Things, and a Domain Name Industry -
Will we see domain name companies go bust in 2009?
It’s capitalism at its best. Circuit City is being liquidated after failing to find a buyer. Linens ‘n Things is finishing up the liquidation process (I wonder when they’ll sell the LNT.com domain?).
And that’s how it’s supposed to be. Weak companies fail, strong ones thrive. Thank goodness the government didn’t step in to bailout Circuit City. Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) offers a superior shopping experience. ... read more ...
