Scenes from DOMAINfest Opening Night Party -
Video from DOMAINfest Global 2010 opening night party.
.Co sponsored the opening night party at DOMAINfest Tuesday evening. It was supposed to be a beach party, but the weather didn’t cooperate. In the video below, look for the cameo of Frank Schilling, Chef Patrick, and Michael Berkens. Don’t ask me where Chef Patrick got those sunglasses.
The skies are supposed to clear up by today, leaving the rest of the conference’s activities in good shape.

IDNs: The Next Horizon for GeoDomain Investors -
by Aaron Krawitz, Gary Males Patrick Carleton
[Editor’s note: this is a guest article about the potential of IDN geo domain names.]
We’ve long been believers in GeoDomains and continue to be on the lookout for new and lucrative niches, which is why we have each individually made substantial investments in IDN GeoDomains.
With the fog of uncertainty finally lifting over IDNs, now is the ideal time for for geo investors to stake a claim in IDNs where the window ... read more ...

Prediction: DOMAINfest Attendance Will Break Record -
DOMAINfest could see record attendance.
[Update: Indeed, attendance has broken a record] I’m going to make a prediction for this week’s DOMAINfest conference in Santa Monica: it will break the paid attendance record for DOMAINfest.
I’m hearing whispers that 650 plus people have already registered, and that is bound to grow today and tomorrow. The original hotel sold out very quickly, and even the overflow hotel has sold out. That means guests are now being ... read more ...
Answering Five Questions about TRAFFIC Vegas -
Answering last week’s questions.
Last week I posed five questions that would be answered at the TRAFFIC conference in Las Vegas. We now have the answers:
1. Is Latona’s ready for primetime? Unfortunately not. Although I’m not sure why it didn’t work, I know there were internet connectivity issues with the hotel. It also appears that the web application got slammed with traffic and couldn’t handle the load. I’m sure Rick Latona will fill us in when ... read more ...

Scenes From TRAFFIC, Day Two -
Scenes and highlights from day two of the Targeted Traffic conference in Las Vegas.
Yesterday was certainly an interesting one at the TRAFFIC Conference. The best moment of the conference was seeing how packed the auction room was for the start of the live auction. I haven’t seen that many buyers at a live auction in a long time. Unfortunately, we all know now that it took a turn for the worse as Latonas.com auction system was overburdened by traffic, bringing ... read more ...

Scenes from Opening Night of TRAFFIC Conference -
TRAFFIC gets underway in Las Vegas.
I woke up this morning to a beautiful view of snow capped mountains from my hotel room at the Hard Rock. It’s beautiful today, but yesterday was one of those freak weather days in Las Vegas where it rained. That spelled trouble for airlines, and I ended up arriving after most of yesterday’s opening sessions at TRAFFIC.
But the people who attended the networking sessions said they got a lot out of them, and it certainly jump ... read more ...

5 Domain Industry Questions to Be Answered in Next 72 Hours -
This week’s TRAFFIC event will answer some questions.
Well, I’m off to Vegas.
I’m excited to attend the updated T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference. But unlike Ron, I’m not stoked about having two conferences back-to-back. Perhaps it’s because I live in the middle of the country (not coming from the East coast) and have a small child.
Nonetheless, business is business. OK, and a bit of fun.
For the next 72 hours, it’s all about TRAFFIC. Here are five questions ... read more ...

Last Chance for Domainer Mardi Gras Hotel Rooms -
If you’re thinking about attending Domainer Mardi Gras ’10, the bell is tolling for hotel rooms.
Usually when you miss out on a domain conference’s hotel block, it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of other hotels in the vicinity where you can stay.
But Domainer Mardi Gras is different — and that’s why you need to reserve your room by Thursday, January 21. If you don’t book by Thursday, here’s what’s going to happen:
1. Any rooms from ... read more ...

Remember, No One Searches with Quotes -
Phrase searches are an important metric, but have their limitations.
When domainers try to determine the popularity of keywords in their domain names, they usually find the number of phrase match results at Google. To find this, you just search with “quotes around your keywords”. That tells Google to return results with the actual phrase inside your quotes, in the actual order.
This matters for domains because order matters. Consider the domain name GameFootball.com. ... read more ...
Two Common Questions to Answer Before Launching a Geo Web Site -
Answers to two common questions about starting a geo domain web site.
I’ve received numerous inquiries regarding my experience with Lakeway.com, a city directory site for Lakeway, Texas. I’ve answered a number of them personally, but would like to address a couple of them.
I’m in no way an authority on city geo web sites. But I’m assuming most readers aren’t either, which makes this relevant.
Here are two common questions I’ve been asked and the answers:

TRAFFIC Conference Names Keynote, Updates Agenda -
Keynote named for next week’s conference.
The agenda for next week’s Targeted T.R.A.F.F.I.C. domain name conference has been updated and now includes a keynote: Joseph McClendon III.
McClendon is founder of Pro-Sequences Research Group, a “Peak Performance coaching organization”. This appears to be a very different keynote than from past conferences.
Other changes to the agenda:

Report Card: TV Advertising for Geo Web Sites -
After 6 months, how have my TV commercial’s fared?
Six months ago I started advertising my Lakeway web site on cable TV. A few people have asked how it’s working.
The answer is tricky. If the goal were merely to drive traffic to Lakeway.com, I’d say it’s not worth the cost. I could have put the cable advertising money into Google Adwords and gotten much more traffic.
But it’s not just about web traffic. It’s about credibility, and that’s where ... read more ...

Survey Focus: Which Domain Name Forum is Best? -
Cast your vote for the best domain name forum.
For many years, there have been two major domain forums, DNForum and NamePros. Behind that were a number of smaller forums. While that remains true, some shakeup is in progress. DomainState, a smaller forum, has been put on the auction block. Hopefully DomainState, which has a very different audience and feel than the larger forums, sticks around. It seems that bidding interest is high.
But which domain forum is ... read more ...
Hover Email Service Hit by Phishing Attack -
Domain registrar’s personalized email service is target of phishers.
Hover Personalized Email, a service from Tucows, is reporting that its members are receiving phishing emails.
The services lets you sign up for a personalized email address using one of Tucows’ 40,000 last name domain names, which it obtained when it acquired NetIdentity. For example, people with the last name Smith can get firstname@smith.net.
Here’s an example of the phishing email:

Suddenly, Content Takes Center Stage during Domain Conferences -
Good content sessions planned for January domain conferences.
I rarely go to sessions and panels at trade shows. I prefer to spend my time networking. That’s especially true at domain name shows, because I usually find the programming banal. But that may change this month. The agendas for both T.R.A.F.F.I.C. and DOMAINfest have some interesting — if not exciting — sessions.

TRAFFIC Networking Campaign Nets 250 Requests -
“Who do you want to meet” campaign successful.
As you heard on DNW Radio, networking is the biggest reason people go to domain name conferences. With that knowledge, Rick Latona’s team came up with an ingenious advertising campaign for TRAFFIC Las Vegas. Through banner ads, people were able to enter the names of people they’d like to meet at TRAFFIC, and the organizers would try to make it happen:
So far, 250 people have taken TRAFFIC up on its offer, Latona ... read more ...

VeriSign Isn’t Stupid. That’s Why It’s Raising .Com Prices -
VeriSign price increase makes sense for the company.
There has been a collective whine from the domainer community over the past 12 hours after news broke that VeriSign is increasing .com prices again.
I’m whining, too. But this is an expected and smart move by VeriSign.
VeriSign’s contract with ICANN allows it to raise prices 7% in any four years of its current six year contract. It raised prices in the first two years, bringing VeriSign’s take of a .com ... read more ...

Help shape the 5th Annual Domain Name Wire Survey.
It’s almost time for the 5th Annual Domain Name Wire Survey, where you get to pick the best domain name registrars, parking companies, and services in the industry.

How to Create a Print Newsletter to Promote Your Geo Web Site -
Going offline to promote your city web site.
A couple months ago I sat at a cafe for lunch in Lakeway, Texas. Alone with nothing but myself and a sandwich, I grabbed a couple newsletters off the newsstand. You may have seen similar newsletters before; they’re front and back, filled with mostly useless content and lots of ads.
But I was a captive audience with nothing else to read. So I read the newsletter. Then it hit me: why not create a local newsletter, ... read more ...

Making Sedo’s Multi-Bid Interface Better -
Four ways to improve the Sedo bulk bidding interface.
If you missed the conclusion of Sedo’s December Great Domains auction, you missed some great deals. I picked up five good domains at nice prices. Don’t say I didn’t give you a heads up.
This was the first time I was bidding on multiple domains that closed at the same time on Sedo, so it was my first experience with Sedo’s “bulk” bidding system. It worked fine, but there are several ways it can be ... read more ...

Sedo Web Site Redesign Goes Live -
Sedo web site redesign launches today.
At the SedoPro Partner Forum in Key West this year, the company said it was working on a redesign of its site. The site had become outdated and needed a refresh.

The first thing you’ll notice is a much smaller home page that fits it the typical browser without scrolling down. To achieve this, Sedo has removed much of the real estate for current domain listings. It has replaced these ... read more ...

Google Public DNS Could Be Data Treasure Trove for Google -
Google DNS is a big deal.
Google announced today that it is launching Google Public DNS, a free DNS resolver that promises to speed up the web. This is a big deal for web site owners and domainers. Here’s why.
1. Google may have just killed OpenDNS. OpenDNS does effectively the same thing Google hopes to do with its DNS. OpenDNS (which I personally use) makes money by showing ads when you type in a domain that doesn’t exist. This is similar to what Verizon ... read more ...
