Boston: a core of a domain name aftermarket -
Two companies in Boston handle the bulk of the domain name aftermarket.
I’m up in Boston for HostingCon, and spent my Monday visiting two of the largest and longest running domain name aftermarkets: NameMedia (Afternic) and Sedo.
The two are separated by just a fifteen minute drive, so it’s fair to call Boston the center of the domain name aftermarket.
My first stop was NameMedia’s office in Waltham.

Let’s Face It; Sedo.com Generic .Me Auction, It Was A Bust - The Sedo.com Generic .Me domain name auction that concluded yesterday was, well there is no other way to say it, a bust.
Out of the 190 domain names for sale only 8 domain names sold and the vast majority never even got a bid.
The auction was run in conjunction with Brands-and-Jingles whose principal Mark Kychma told had to say:
“The result are very disappointing – Brands-and-Jingles is regularly selling .ME names in the range $5k-$50k.”
“This auction failed to recognize the value of some ... read more ...

Sedo adjusts gain superintendence down, though there’s a china backing for domain parkers -
Sedo paying out more to top domain parking clients.
Sedo Holding has lowered its earnings forecast for the current year due to “confirming margin development in Domain Marketing in the second quarter 2012.”
While this may seem like a bad thing, there’s a silver lining for some of Sedo’s larger domain parking clients. When asked for comment, Sedo.com CEO Tobias Flaitz told Domain Name Wire:

Hipsters.com for sale: Afternic teams adult with SnapNames for auction and .Me kicks off during Sedo -
Where are my black framed glasses?
SnapNames just started its “Summer Kick-Off Auction“, run in conjunction with Afternic.
Although most of the domains in the auction are owned by Afternic or an affiliate company, some of the domains appear to be owned by the company’s larger clients.
Compared to recent auction lists, this one looks to be a winner. My personal favorite: Hipsters.com for under $10,000. That’s a great domain.

My picks for Sedo’s Great Domains auction -
Great Domains auction ends Thursday. Here’s what I like.
This month’s Great Domains auction at Sedo ends on Thursday. The lineup doesn’t include as many big ticket domains as usual; there’s only one domain with a reserve over $25,000. But that’s OK, there are some good domains worthy of attention.
Here are ones that popped out to me:
Reconnect.com – With a reserve range $10k-$25k, this would be good only if you have a plan for the domain. I can think ... read more ...

Zimbabwe.com seller takes outrageous loss -
Zimbabwe.com sells for a fraction of what it sold for in 2007.
We always hear stories about people who bought domains and flipped them for many times their purchase price. But the opposite also happens.
Take the case of Zimbabwe.com, which just sold for $42,500 at Sedo.
The last time this domain (reported) sold was in 2007. Purchase price: $130,000.
It’s possible the domain also changed hands in 2008. Regardless of if it has changed hands since 2007, the domain ... read more ...

You unequivocally need to get on a bound cost domain bandwagon -
SedoMLS and AfternicDLS are changing the game.
Sedo released its first quarter domain name market study today (pdf). For the first time ever, fixed price “buy now” listings were the company’s most common type of sale. 39% of sales were buy now purchases and 34% were offer-counter offer purchases.
There’s a simple reason for this: end user buyers don’t want to negotiate. And they want their domain now.
I suspect a lot of these sales occurred through SedoMLS. ... read more ...

A Customer Say Sedo Allows Users To Edit Listings Of Domains They Don’t Own - This morning I logged in to sedo and was surprised to notice that I had access to somebody ELSE’s domain listings in addition to some of my own.
While sedo was in the middle of assuring me that these were only “pending listings”, I changed the price of Ability.info (not my domain) from over $6,000 to just $100 and proceeded to buy it. However, since Ability.info was “mine” (it isn’t, remember), Sedo wouldn’t allow the transaction to proceed. Sedo didn’t seem to understand why this ... read more ...

Domain Marketplaces Still Grapple with Orphaned Listings -
Lots of progress, but still an issue of orphaned domain name listings on marketplaces.
If you’ve been buying domains on major domain name marketplaces for any number of years you’ve certainly come across a domain listed for sale that isn’t actually for sale.
I still remember “buying” SugarCookies.com for something like $2500 many years ago only to find out the person who had listed it had sold it already.

Parking company touts benefits over DNS.
Domain parkers have only a few days left before the end of URL forwarding for Google parking. For most people that means switching to DNS parking. But there’s another option at some parking companies, including CNAME.
CNAME parking basically lets you point the web traffic for a domain to the parking servers. It’s how Google’s own Adsense for Domains self-serve product originally worked. It’s a bit more work the first ... read more ...
