Football players union gears up for possible lockout by buying domain name.
Is a lockout of National Football League players likely in 2011? NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith told ESPN that, on a scale from 1-10, the likelihood of a lockout is a 14. That sounds serious.
Perhaps to gain an upper hand, the NFL Players Association just bought the domain name NFLLockout.com. Seller Eric Gargiulo tells Domain Name Wire that he sold the domain ... read more ...

Some Schmuck Bought Schmuck.com for $66,000 -
German entity buys Schmuck.com domain name.
Sedo has sold the domain name Schmuck.com for 49,000 EUR, or roughly $66,000 at today’s exchange rates. Before you think it’s going to be some site about jerks or idiots, it looks like this may be a brand name in Germany, and it’s also a common surname.
Sedo broke the six figure barrier this past week with DolceVita.com selling for $120,000 to the shoe company of the same name, which got a nice upgrade to its existing ... read more ...

I talked to Mobile Entertainment Group founder Jan Leijnse by phone today. He explained that he’s not sure how much traffic the domain name gets as it was parked at Sedo only recently.

Company brings new meaning to “pumping”.
I’m not sure what it’s like being a company traded on the pink sheets. But a lot of them try to do whatever they can to hype themselves.

Domain Price Fairy Tales are Hard to Kill -
Myths about sales prices grow like weeds.
With Sex.com hitting the auction block next week, mainstream media are in a tizzy writing about the auction of the “world’s most valuable domain name”. As usual, they’re comparing it to other big ticket domain sales. The only problem is that many of the sales they refer to have misleading sales figures.

LuxuryNames.com Starts New Auction -
LuxuryNames.com begins its second domain name auction.
LuxuryNames.com has kicked off a new auction titled 4 Days – 40 Names. The auction runs through Thursday.
The auction actually has 41 names in .com, .net, and .org. Like the last auction run by LuxuryNames.com, many of the domain names have high search volumes and/or frequency.
I like the smaller number of domain names in this auction, as it assures none will be overlooked.

End User Perspective: Buying a Premium Domain on GoDaddy -
Simplicity helps end user buy domain name.
In October I wrote about GoDaddy’s service that lets you place your domains for sale within the registration path, called Premium Domain Names. Using a “Premium Listing”, your domain shows up in the GoDaddy domain marketplace. But the real value is that they also show up prominently when someone is searching for that exact domain name:

Sedo’s position at the top of the charts is nothing new — it took 40% of the vote. But this is down from 48% last year. Where did those 8% go? Well, more people are flocking to GoDaddy.
Here are the top five:
1. Sedo 40%
2. GoDaddy 13%
3. NameMedia (Afternic, BuyDomains) 10%

Sedo didn’t turn in any blockbuster domain sales over the past week, but you can forgive the company for a slower-than-normal week. After all, the company just released its 2009 domain market study (pdf), which contains a startling stat: Sedo sold 10,070 domain names last quarter.
That’s more than the company sold in any one quarter for at least the past two years, and maybe more. (I have an inquiry into Sedo to find out ... read more ...

The Problem With Having Too Many Domains in an Auction -
For online domain auctions, less is more.
Two “extended” domain name auctions concluded this week. The results were underwhelming.
In the Rick Latona auction, only 9 of 600 domain names sold. The Moniker extended auction sold 79 of about 2,000 domains.
So what’s the problem? Too many domains, and especially too many poorly priced domain names.
I won’t profess to be an expert at picking which domain names will sell. But I assume auction houses apply some ... read more ...
